The aim of this study was to evaluate the ocular disorders in COVID-19 patients, two to three months after infection.In this cross-sectional, historically controlled study, fifty-one COVID-19 patients were compared with thirty-seven age, and gender-matched healthy individuals. After complete ophthalmological examination, all participants underwent peripapillary and macular optical coherence tomography, and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) measurements (OptoVue Inc, Freemont, CA, USA).The time between the initial onset of symptoms, and ophthalmologic examination was 63.31±15.21 (40-95 days). Ophthalmic examination of all the recovered COVID-19 patients was within normal range. None of the peripapillary and macular OCTA parameters were significantly different between the two groups with pairwise comparisons, but after adjusting for age, gender, axial length, and signal strength index (SSI), recovered COVID-19 eyes showed a significant increase in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber (RNFL) thickness, superficial, and deep macular vessel densities in parafoveal and perifoveal regions compared with healthy control eyes (p<= 0.05). Inner retinal thickness overall is higher in recovered COVID-19 eyes compared to healthy eyes after adjustment.Patients with moderate-intensity SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia had altered peripapillary and macular vessel density compared to healthy subjects. Further investigation is warranted to analyze the correlation of these changes with disease severity as well as evolution of these changes over time.

Introduction and Aim. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness and visual defect, particularly in elderly people across the world. This meta-analysis aimed at investigating the relationship between statin and the risk of AMD. Methods. Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched for articles that addressed the relationship between statin consumption and risk of AMD. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Cochran’s Q test and the I2 statistic were used to evaluate the heterogeneity. To assess potential publication bias, Begg’s test was used. Results. In total, 22 studies were reviewed in the meta-analysis that included 2063195 participants and 313702 (15.20%) AMD patients compared to individuals not receiving statins. The OR of AMD in statin-receiving participants was 0.93 (95% CI; 0.83–1.05, P=0.225). The OR of AMD in those that received statins was 0.92 (95% CI; 0.75–1.13, P=0.440) in case-control studies, 0.95 (95% CI; 0.82–1.09, P=0.458) in cohort studies, 0.951 (95% CI; 0.59–1.53, P=0.831) in cross-sectional studies, 0.94 (95% CI; 0.80–1.10, P=0.468) in North America, 0.81 (95% CI; 0.54–1.21, P=0.308) in Europe, 1.05 (95% CI; 0.94–1.18, P=0.362) in Asia, and 0.52 (95% CI; 0.26–1.04, P=0.125) in Australia. No publication bias was observed in this study (P=0.114). Conclusion. According to the results of this study, taking statins does not increase or decrease the risk of AMD development. Therefore, this drug group cannot be considered a protective or risk factor for the occurrence of AMD.

Introduction: Dry Eye Disease (DED) is one of the most common problems and reasons for referring to ophthalmology clinics, which has been exacerbated by the increased use of computers and mobile phones. Aim: The purpose of the present systemic review was to review the effects and mechanism of medicinal plants in DED treatment. Materials and Methods: The key words "Dry eye" or "Keratoconjunctivitis sicca" or "keratitis sicca" in combination with "medicinal plant", "herb", and "phyto" were used to conduct the review. Clinical and experimental published articles in English language between 2000-2018 were retrieved from databases including the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), PubMed and Scopus. Results: Totally, 199 articles were retrieved from the electronic database and finally 17 articles were included in the final analysis. Various plants such as Buddleja officinalis, Aristotelia chilensis, Prunus armeniaca, Hippophae rhamnoides, Lycium barbarum, and Rhynchosia volubilis Lour are effective in treating DED through different mechanisms. Herbal derivatives such as curcumin, antioxidant glasses, phytoestrogen, ferulic acid, and kaempferol can be used as food supplement independently and in some cases along with chemical drugs. Chinese herbal formulations and compounds such as 'Chi-Ju-Di-Huang-Wan', 'TriphalaGhritaNetratarpan', and 'ShengJinRunZaoYangXue' granules can play a role in inducing anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of the disease. Conclusion: Generally, medicinal plants reduce tear film stability by decreasing osmolarity and increasing tear production. Several mechanisms, including the reduction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) (antioxidant activity), the prevention of cell apoptosis, the modulation of inflammatory factors, and the regulation of androgens, can affect lacrimal glands and membrane cells, thereby helping to treat DED.
Background: Mapping from non-performance-based measures onto generic performance-based measures provides an appropriate solution to derive utilities to be used in economic evaluations.Objectives: This study aimed to create a model through which EQ-5D utilities for cataracts can be obtained from scores on the disease-specific Catquest measure.Patients and Methods: One hundred ninety-nine observations from 103 patients who self-administered the EQ-5D, the Catquest and questions on demographic and clinical characteristics were included in the analysis. Data was divided into estimation and validation datasets. To predict EQ-5D utilities, multiple regression analysis, using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and the censored least absolute deviation (CLAD), was performed. Catquest scores, age, gender, and performing surgery were included as explanatory variables. An estimation dataset was used to derive the coefficients, and these coefficients were then validated using a validation dataset. Based on the explanatory power, the consistency, the simplicity, the mean absolute error (MAE) and the correlations between observed and fitted utilities, the most appropriate model was selected.Results: The mean EQ-5D and Catquest scores of the total sample were 0.631 and 15.8, respectively. Age and surgery showed no significant effect for either method. Removing age and surgery, model II was built and given an R-2 of 0.697, an MAE of 0.1176 for the OLS and an R-2 of 0.614, and an MAE of 0.1153 for the CLAD method. In the validation stage, the CLAD revealed better prediction ability, with an MAE of 0.198 versus an MAE of 0.209 for the OLS. ICC and Bland-Altman analysis put the CLAD as a preferred method with the following equation: Utilities (EQ-5D) = 0.988 - 0.0281 x Catquest (PD) + 0.102 x gender (male = 1).Conclusions: Based on these results, a mapping function was obtained which appears to be valuable in predicting EQ-5D utilities from Catquest scores. This function gives an appropriate solution to estimate utilities when primary EQ-5D data is not available. Although the model represents good consistency and predictive ability, further examination of obtained function is required with large samples.
Background & Aims: Keratoconus (KC) is an eye disorder in which the cornea is swollen, thinned and deformed. Despite extensive studies, the pathophysiological processes and genetic etiology of KC is unknown. The disease incidence is approximately 1 in 2000 and is the most common cause of corneal transplantation in the US. Many genes are involved in the disease, but evidence suggests a major role for VSX1 in the etiology of KC. This study aimed to determine the frequency of mutations in exons 2, 4 of the VSX1 gene in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, Iran. Methods: In this experimental study, mutations in two exons including exons 2 and 4 of VSX1 were investigated in 50 patients with KC. DNA was extracted using a standard phenol-chloroform method. PCRSSCP/ HA was performed, followed by DNA sequencing to confirm the identified motility shift. Results: H244R mutation was identified in exon 4 of only one patient. Conclusion: Our investigation showed that the KC-related VSX1 mutations are found in very small samples in the study subjects from Iran. Further investigations on other genes are needed to clarify their roles in KC pathogenesis.

This study aimed to determine the frequency of mutations in exons 2, 3 and 4 of the VSX1 gene in Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari province in the southwest of Iran.STUDY DESIGN:In this experimental study, mutations in 3 exons, namely exons 2, 3 and 4, of VSX1 were investigated in 50 patients with KC and 50 healthy control subjects. DNA was extracted using a standard phenol-chloroform method. PCR-single-strand conformational polymorphism/heteroduplex analysis was performed, followed by DNA sequencing to confirm the identified motility shifts.RESULTS:H244R mutations were found in 1 patient and also in 1 healthy control subject. Furthermore, 12 polymorphisms were identified in patients with KC and 7 in healthy control subjects [rs6138482 and c.546A>G (rs12480307)].CONCLUSION:Our investigation showed that KC-related VSX1 mutations were found in a very small proportion of the studied patients from Iran. Further investigations on other genes are needed to clarify their roles in KC pathogenesis.
