Hypertension (HT) is a prevalent chronic condition that contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality by leading to target organ damage. Although nitric oxide (NO) underpins endothelial function and has been implicated in several cardiovascular conditions, its association with subclinical hypertension-mediated organ damage remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nitrite/nitrate (NOx)—an indirect index of NO pathways and subclinical myocardial and renal dysfunction in patients with HT. This study prospectively screened 433 adult hypertensive patients, of whom 400 were included in a cross-sectional analysis after exclusion of conditions potentially confounding cardiac or renal assessment, including end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis. All participants underwent transthoracic echocardiography to assess ventricle functions using left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS) and provided a spot urine sample for the measurement of the urine albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR). In addition to NOx levels, inducible and endothelial nitric oxide synthase levels were evaluated from participants’ blood samples. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of quercetin on cyclophosphamideinduced cardiotoxicity. A total of 35 female rats were used in the study, divided into five groups of seven rats each. All of the rats, except those in the control group, underwent ovariectomy and had their ovaries removed. This eliminated the potential impact of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone on the study. All rats were fed ad libitum. While the control and ovariectomy groups received no treatment, 50 mg/kg quercetin (oral) was administered to the quercetin group, 100 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (intraperitoneal) to the cyclophosphamide group, and 50 mg/kg quercetin (oral) and 100 mg/kg cyclophosphamide to the quercetin + cyclophosphamide group was applied. electrocardiography (ECG) measurements were taken before toxicity induction (day 0) and on day 5 after toxicity induction. At the end of the study, the rats were euthanized under anesthesia in accordance with ethical rules, and tissue and blood samples necessary for analysis were taken. Troponin, creatine kinase (CK), and creatinine kinase MB (CK-MB) parameters were measured in the blood samples taken. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses (desmin and vimentin) were performed on heart tissue. According to the analysis, an increase in troponin, CK, and CK-MB parameters was observed in the cyclophosphamide group, while a decrease was observed in the quercetin group. In desmin and vimentin immunoreactivity, a decrease was observed in the cyclophosphamide group, while an increase was observed in the quercetin group. In conclusion, in our study, we demonstrated that quercetin has a positive effect against cyclophosphamide-induced cardiotoxicity.
Objective: Atrial High Rate Episodes (AHRE) are subclinical atrial tachyarrhythmias detectable by cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). AHREs have been associated with an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF), thromboembolism, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, and mortality. Although recent studies have assessed the value of oxidative stress markers in patients with AF, the relationships between AHRE and oxidative stress markers, including nitric oxide, has not yet been elucidated. This study aims to investigate the relationship between these markers and AHRE. Method: This prospective, cross-sectional study comprised 180 patients with CIEDs. The study population was divided into two groups based on the presence (n = 78) and absense (n = 102) of AHRE to analyze its association with biomarkers. Results: The AHRE (+) group was significantly older, had a higher prevalence of hypertension, higher NT-proBNP (508.8 +/- 249 pg/mL vs. 415.3 +/- 292.1; P = 0.037), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (20.9 +/- 4.1 pmol/L vs. 19.1 +/- 3.1 pmol/L; P = 0.006), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity (1,935.9 +/- 326.1 pg/mL vs. 1,677.4 +/- 363.2 pg/mL; P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified age, hypertension, MDA (odds ratio [OR]: 1.131, 95%CI: 1.009 - 1.268, P 0.035), iNOS activity (OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 1.001 - 1.003, P < 0.001), and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity (OR = 0.990, 95% CI = 0.986 - 0.984, P < 0.001) as independent predictors of AHRE. Conclusion: The study findings indicated that plasma levels of NT-proBNP, MDA, nitric oxide, and the expression of iNOS and eNOS were significantly associated with AHRE. Moreover, elevated plasma MDA concentrations, increased iNOS activity, and decreased eNOS activity were identified as independent predictors of AHRE.
Aims: The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between homocysteine and no-reflow phenomenon in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). Methods: Patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI) who underwent pPCI in our center between May 01, 2022, and 20 August 2023 were included in this cross-sectional observational study. Patients were classified into two groups according to the occurrence of no-reflow during pPCI. Findings were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 332 patients [male, 75 (%82.8)] with STEMI undergoing pPCI, were included. Among them, 35 (10.5%) patients developed no-reflow. Homocysteine level was significantly higher in the no-reflow(+) group than the no-reflow(-) group [median (IQR), 19.02 (16.11-22.23 vs. 12.45 (10.99-14.93), p=0.019]. Objective: The currently available cardiac biomarkers are not sufficient to differentiate between myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without the use of coronary angiography. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity as a potential marker for the differential diagnosis of MINOCA and ACS. Method: The study population comprised 734 consecutive patients who presented to our hospital with chest pain between July 2022 and January 2023. Leftover plasma samples collected in EDTA vials were sent for troponin T estimation within 24 hours of the onset of chest pain. Patients’ blood samples were collected into tubes for malondialdehyde (MDA), iNOS, and total sialic acid (TSA) measurements and centrifuged at 4000 g, 4 °C for 10 min, and the sera obtained as a result were kept at -25 °C until the analyses were performed. Results: The mean age of the study population, which consisted of 648 patients [421 (65.6%) males, was 62±12] years. There were no significant difference between the MINOCA and ACS patients in MDA and homocysteine levels. Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed significant correlations between gender, age, diabetes mellitus (DM), glucose, urea, iNOS, smoking, hemoglobin, platelets, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatine, and TSA as significant predictors of MINOCA. Further analysis of these variables using multivariate logistic regression revealed that sex, age, presence of DM, glucose and urea levels, and iNOS were independent predictors of MINOCA. The iNOS level was significantly higher in patients with MINOCA than in those with ACS. The optimal iNOS cut-off value of >1372.9 pg/mL predicted MINOCA with 99.4% sensitivity and 93.7% specificity (area under the curve: 0.99, 95% confidence interval: 0.979-0.996, p<0.001). Conclusion: iNOS activity may help distinguish between ACS and MINOCA without the need for coronary angiography.
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE:Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a predictive marker of cardiovascular events in patients with stable angina pectoris. However, there is limited information available regarding this marker in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of the study was to explore the association of MDA levels with inhospital mortality among patients with ACS. MATERIALS AND METHODS:The study sample consisted of 556 ACS patients. The leftover plasma samples collected in EDTA vials for troponin T estimation within 24 h of chest pain were used for analysis. Blood samples were collected into tubes for MDA, nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (i-NOS), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (e-NOS), total sialic acid (TSA), NT-proBNP, ANP, homocysteine, and cardiac troponin I (cTnI). The blood samples were centrifuged (4000 g , 4 °C) for 10 min, and the obtained serum then kept at -25 °C until the analyses were carried out. The relationship between these markers and inhospital mortality of ACS patients was investigated. RESULTS:Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed significant correlations among sex, age, creatine, MDA, NT-proBNP, ANP, homocysteine, cTnI, NO, e-NOS, i-NOS, and TSA. Further analysis of these variables using the multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that age, creatine, MDA, and NT-proBNP were independent predictors. Optimal MDA cutoff value of >33.1 predicted inhospital mortality with 85% sensitivity and 88.17% specificity [AUC: 0.905 (95% CI: 0.878-0.928, P < 0.001)]. CONCLUSION:We demonstrated that MDA levels were elevated in cases of inhospital mortality among ACS patients and the optimal MDA cutoff value of >33.1 predicted inhospital mortality with 85% sensitivity and 88.17% specificity.
The main objective of the study was to determine the growth, hematologicalparameters, and gut-associated attributes in Italian quails fed chia seed ( Salvia hispanica L .) (CS). Two hundred mixed-sex, 1-day-old Italian quails were randomly distributed into four treatment groups (n=50 birds/group) kept in five replicate pens with 10 birds per pen from day 1 to 35, under a completely randomized design. The control group received a basal diet with no CS, whereas the other groups were fed diets containing 1%, 2%, and 3% CS. Results revealed that for the 0-5 weeks study period, the live weight increased, and the feed conversion ratio (FCR)demonstrated statistically significant (P = 0.05) decrease with supplementation of 3% CS. However statistically non-significant (P > 0.05) difference was noticed between control groups and groups fed diets containing 1%, 2%, and 3% of CS for slaughter liveweight, hot carcass, cold carcass, dressing percentage, heart and liver weight, and pH of carcass at the time of slaughter and after 24 hours. Similarly, breast meat dry matter, ash percentage, cooking loss, and water holding capacity were also not influenced(P > 0.05) by supplementation of CS. Regarding gut associated attributes, the ileal villus height (VH) of the control diet is higher in comparison to all inclusion levels of CS (1%, 2%, and 3%) in diets, means supplementation of CS resulted in reduced (P< 0.05) VH, whereas crypt depth (CD) was reduced (P = 0.001) quadratically. The total protein and cholesterol profile showed statistically significant (P = 0.001) increase,and the lipid profilesdecreased at a statistically significant level (P = 0.001) with the supplementation of CS. The CS-fed groups had substantially greater values of myristoleic acid, linoleic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, PUFA, USFA, PUFA/SFA, UFA/SFA, and omega 6 (n6), whereas lower values of palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, eicosanoic acid, erucic acid, SFA in the breast meat of quails comparedto the control group. In conclusion, the supplementation of 3% CS resulted in better growth performance, improved blood parameters, and an enhanced nutritional profile of quail breast meat for human consumption.
This study aimed to investigate the stress-related changes that may occur in sheep following non-surgical cervical line passage. A total of 20 sheep underwent transcervical transition, and their heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and blood samples were collected at specific time points: 1 h prior to the procedure, immediately after the procedure, and at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 h post-procedure. The study found that there was a statistically significant decrease in body temperature immediately after the procedure (p < .05); however, there were no significant differences in body temperature at other time points (p > .05). Respiratory rate remained similar throughout the study, and no significant differences were observed (p > .05). On the other hand, there was a significant increase in heart rate at the 1-h mark after the procedure (p < .05), which subsequently decreased to a similar level as the control group at the 4-h mark after the procedure (p > .05). The cortisol levels increased significantly after the application (p < .05) but decreased to a level similar to the control after 1 h (p > .05). The level of nitric oxide increased significantly in the first hour (p < .05) and decreased by the 5th hour (p < .05). There was a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant capacity (TOC) levels 2 h after the application (p < .05), but this increase ceased at the 4th and 5th hours for MDA (p > .05) and at the 3rd, 4th and 5th hours for TOC (p > .05). The total antioxidant capacity decreased after the 2nd hour of application (p < .05) but remained similar at the fourth and 5th hours (p > .05). In conclusion, based on the cortisol data, transcervical manipulations create short-term stress. Therefore, it may be necessary to use various antioxidants before such procedures to reduce the effects of oxidative stress.
Traumatic pericarditis (TP) emerges as a result of foreign bodies pricking the heart, and these animals cannot be treated. Traumatic pericarditis is one of the most important cardiac diseases that may result in a decrease in milk yield, animal death, and fetal deaths in affected pregnant animals and lead to economic losses. Cardiac markers, which have been used in human medicine for years and have recently started to be used in veterinary medicine, can detect mild myocardial damage that may occur in the early stages of heart-related diseases. In this study it was aimed to determine the cardiac damage in cattle with TP by cardiac biomarkers. In the study, cTn-I, ANP, NT-proBNP, homocysteine, CRP, CK-MB, LDH, AST, and ALT levels were determined to be statistically higher in cattle with TP than in healthy animals (P < 0.01). NT-proBNP increased approximately 11 times, ANP about 10 times, cTn-I and Homocysteine increased 3 times, and CRP and CK-MB increased 2 times in cattle with TP. In conclusion, some cardiac markers were examined in the early detection of cardiac damage and diagnosis of cattle with TP, and it was concluded that the use of these markers would be beneficial. Moreover, it was concluded that ANP, Nt-proBNP, and homocysteine, which were the first data on cattle with TP, could be used in the detection of the severity of cardiac damage.
In this study, it was aimed to examine the biochemical changes, hematological changes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology and blood serum of cattle with head-eye form of Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF). For this pur- pose, 22 cattle diagnosed with "head-eye form" of MCF and clinically healthy 10 cattle were evaluated. Blood and cere- brospinal fluid (CSF) were collected from all cattle. In sera, AST, urea, glucose, CK (P<0.05), LDH levels (P<0.01) were found be high, ALT, ALP, cholesterol (P<0.05), Ca, total protein (P<0.01) and Mg, albumine and Fe levels (P<0.001) were found to be low in MCF group when compared to the control group. In CSF, Ca (P<0.01) and total protein levels (P<0.001) were found high glucose level (P<0.05) was found low in MCF group when compared to the control group. In haematology, some parameters were determined to be different between the groups. In cytological results of CSF in MCF group, polymorphonuclear leucocytes, lymphocytes, erytrocytes, macrophages and plasma cells were determined. In conclusion, since there were a limited number of studies examining biochemical, cytologic and hematological results of MCF especially in CSF, the results from our study were thought to be important for future stud- ies in which viral diseases affects the nervous system of cattles.
Antioxidants provide protection against free radicals formed as a result of increased metabolism in living organisms and the damage these radicals cause to the cell. For this reason, determining the antioxidant levels can help eco-physiologists in the field in understanding the physiological state of the animal at that moment and in conservation biology. In this study, TAC, TOC and OSI values of 12 Long-legged Buzzards (Buteo rufinus), 7 Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo) and 6 Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), 15 Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea), 7 Eurasian Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo) brought to rehabilitation centre with injuries due to various reasons were examined. First of all, physical examinations of the birds brought to the centre were made. They were then kept in species-specific rooms until recovery. After they were rehabilitated, blood was taken from the birds 1-2 days before they were released into the nature. As a result of blood analysis, TOC and OSI values were found to be high in Eurasian Eagle Owl, Golden Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard and Common Buzzards which were brought with a diagnosis of gunshot wounds, soft tissue trauma, femur or wing fractures. Although these birds were rehabilitated, the reason why TOC and OSI values were high in the individuals brought with these diagnoses may be the trauma experienced by these free-living birds and their subsequent detention in captivity. After the birds were treated and rehabilitated, they were released back to nature in habitats specific to each species.
This study aims to evaluate the eff ects of a probiotic mixture (PM) supplement on the growth performance and the serum biochemical parameters of native Turkish geese. A total of 60 one-day-old goslings were randomly divided into three groups, and each group was divided into four subgroups with five animals each. While no supplement was added to the drinking water of the control group, 0.25 mL and 0.50 mL of PM were supplemented in the drinking water of the PM-1 and PM-2 groups, respectively. The trial was completed in 10 weeks. The results revealed that supplementation of 0.50 mL/L PM in drinking water improved the live weight, live weight gain, feed consumption, feed/gain ratio. The supplementation of PM improved dressing and the liver weight, but it did not have an impact on the heart and gizzard weight of geese. It was also observed that 0.50 mL of PM increased the serum biochemical parameters such as glucose, total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus levels. At the same time, it decreased the triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, Aspartate Aminotransferase levels. The present study showed that PM added at 0.50 mL/L in drinking water could be used as a supplement by local breeders for the growth performance of geese.
Bu çalışmanın amacı, Anadolu yerli ırkı atlarının lipid profilini değerlendirmekti. Çalışma materyalini Kars, Ardahan ve Iğdır bölgesinde benzer beslenme şartlarında yaşayan, 3-10 yaş aralığında, 100 adet farklı cinsiyetteki Anadolu yerli ırkı attan oluşmuştur. Tüm sonuçlar Mean±SE olarak verildi. Anadolu yerli ırkı atlarının lipid profilini belirlemek için ölçülen total kolesterol (TC), trigliserid (TG), yüksek yoğunluklu lipoproteinkolesterol (HDL-C), çok düşük yoğunluklu lipoprotein-kolesterol (VLDL-C) ve düşük yoğunluklu lipoprotein-kolesterol (LDL-C ) seviyeleri sırasıyla 117,19±2,73, 75,36±1,11, 57,45±1,21, 19,13±0,30, 30,75±6,45 mg/dL olarak belirlendi. Sonuç olarak; yapılan bu çalışma ile Anadolu yerli atlarında ilk kez lipid profil belirlenmiştir.
This study was conducted to determine the effects on the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of broiler chickens, which were fed an herbal extract mixture (HEM), including Honokiol-Magnolol and Sanguinarine as natural feed additives. A total of 300 one-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were used in this study and randomly divided into four groups with five replicates of 15 broiler chicks each. For the experimental groups, HEM was supplemented in their diet at the levels of 0.00% (C), 1.00% (HEM1), 1.50% (HEM2) and 2.00% (HEM3) respectively. At the end of the experiment, it was concluded that HEM influenced final body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, slaughter weight, carcass weight and carcass yield (P<0.05). Also, HEM decreased malondialdehyde level (P<0.05) and increased glutathione of the breast and liver tissues (P<0.05). HEM showed strong cytoplasmic manganese superoxide dismutase immunoreactivity in duodenal crypts. It is concluded that HEM supplementation to broiler diets may improve the growth performance and antioxidant parameters. Thus, HEM may use natural feed additives to improve broiler health and performance.
Chia (Salvia hispanica L.), Labiate ailesinin bir üyesidir ve tohumları, çiftlik hayvanlarının performansını ve üretkenliğini artırabilecek fenolik bileşikler ve çoklu doymamış yağ asitleri (PUFA'lar) bakımından zengin, antioksidan özelliğindedir. Probiyotikler ise hayvan sağlığı ve büyüme performansı üzerinde farmasötik ve/veya metabolik etkilere sahip olabilecek yem katkı maddeleridir. Etki tarzlarındaki farklılıklar nedeniyle, bunların kombinasyonları ruminant hayvanlarda performans, kan ve rumen parametreleri üzerinde ilave etkilere sahip olabilir. Bu amaçla, çalışmada Tuj koyunları (n=20; 1,5 yaşında; ortalama 40,5 kg) her birinde 5 hayvan bulunacak şekilde 1 kontrol ve 3 deneme grubuna ayrılmıştır. Çalışma rasyonlarına ayrı ve kombine olarak, sırası ile 0, %2,5 chia tohumu (CT), 1g/kg probiyotik enzim karışımı (P+E) ve %2,5 CT + 1g/kg P+E ilavesi yapılmıştır. Koyunlar 7 gün adaptasyon ve 14 gün deneme süresi olacak şekilde toplam 21 gün beslenmiştir. Sonuçlar göstermiştir ki, Tuj koyunlarının rasyonlarına CT ve/veya P+E ilavesinin besi performansı üzerine etkisinin önemsiz bulunmuştur (P>0,05). Rumen toplam uçucu yağ (tVFA) asitleri konsantrasyonu kontrol grubuna göre artarken (P0,05). Serum Esterleşmemiş yağ asitleri, Betahidroksibütrikasit, Nitrik oksit ve kalsiyum, değerleri katkı maddesi ilavesi yapılan deneme gruplarında kontrol grubuna göre farklılık gösterirken (P0,05).
In this study, it was aimed to determine the level of some acute phase proteins and oxidative stress in sheep infected with bluetongue virus disease. Twenty five bluetongue virus-infected and 10 healthy sheep were used. Blood samples from V. jugularis of animals were taken into tubes without anticoagulant. Total antioxidant (TAC)/oxidant capacity (TOC), haptoglobin, serum amyloid A (SAA), ceruloplasmin and albumin levels were determined colorimetrically. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated using the formula. As a result of the analysis, when sheep infected with bluetongue virus disease and healthy sheep were compared, it was determined that SAA, TOC and OSI concentrations increased, albumin and TAC values decreased. However haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin levels increased but were statistically insignificant. In conclusion, it was concluded that oxidative stress occurs in sheep infected with bluetongue virus disease and that acute phase proteins haptoglobin, SAA and ceruloplasmin can be used as inflammation markers.

Background and Aim: Many metabolic and immunological changes occur during the transition period. Innate immunity plays an important role against to infections and natural antibodies (NAb) are important in immunity. This study aims to determine a connection between serum NAb titers, beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations in Tuj and Hemsin sheep during the peripartum period. Materials and Methods: Serum NAb, BHBA, and NEFA levels were determined from the blood samples collected from Tuj and Hemsin sheep on days 30 and 15 before birth, on the day of birth (day 0), and on days 15 and 30 after birth. Results: NAb titers were found to be higher in Tuj than in Hemsin sheep (p<0.001). No statistically significant difference was found in serum BHBA concentrations of both breeds on all sampling days (p>0.05). The serum NEFA level was lower in Tuj sheep in the last 15 days of pregnancy compared to Hemsin sheep (p<0.05), while no difference was found in samples collected at the other time points. Conclusion: This study indicated that serum NAb titers significantly changed in Tuj and Hemsin sheep during the transition period. Serum BHBA and NEFA concentrations increased during the last stages of pregnancy and decreased after birth. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the immunological status could vary by the breed of sheep or various factors that affect the sheep's metabolic state.
Çalışmada Gürcü keçisinin yöresel şartlarda beslenme dönemlerindeki metabolik profilinin belirlenmesi amaçlandı. Çalışmada Kafkas Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi uygulama çiftliğinde barındırılan 30 adet Gürcü keçisi kullanıldı. Hayvanlar çayır-mera beslemesi döneminde doğal çayır ve merada otlatılarak, mera dönemi öncesi ve sonrasında ise otlatıldığı alan biçilerek kurutulan çayır-mera otlarıyla beslendi. Keçilerden çayır-mera öncesi, çayır-mera dönemi ve çayır-mera sonrası besleme dönemlerinde kanlar alınarak bazı metabolik parametreler ölçüldü. Elde edilen analiz sonuçlarında esterleşmemiş yağ asidi (NEFA), β-hidroksi bütirik asit (BHBA), total kolesterol ve üre değerlerinde beslenme dönemleri arasındaki farklılıklar önemli bulundu (P<0.01). Albumin ve globulin değerlerinde ise önemli bir farklılık gözlenmedi (P>0.05). Çalışma sonunda beslenme şartlarına bağlı olarak Gürcü keçisinin metabolik profilinde değişiklikler meydana gelebileceği ve elde edilen verilerin ırk için referans olarak kullanılabileceği sonucuna varıldı.
