Purpose Martial arts have been practiced as a physical activity for health and fitness and are recommended as such by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Previous studies showed that most forms of martial arts had positive effects on health. However, there is no data on the effects of martial arts exercise (MAE) on quality of life. This study evaluated the effects of 12 weeks of MAE intervention on quality of life among overweight/obese premenopausal women.
Changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the human cortex during seizures have been visually observed during surgery as early as the late 19th century. However, the study of continuous cerebral blood flow (CCBF) during seizures was not possible until the development of a subdural thermal-resistance cerebral blood-flow probe. The current experiment investigated cerebral perfusion (CP) in the rat neocortex using commercially available laser Doppler equipment. Epidural EEG of the rat brain was recorded simultaneously under anesthesia. A seizure was induced in the rat by intravenous injection of bicucullin. CP was measured continuously for a) baseline anaesthetized state, b) during the seizure induced by bicucullin, c) after arresting the seizure by injection of nembutal, and d) after return of the EEG to baseline anaesthetized state. We showed that the laser Doppler technique can be used for continuous recording of CP in the anesthetized rat brain, and also demonstrated the relationship between CP and epileptic discharges in the brain.

Aging is a phenomenon that can be observed in biological and mechanical systems. The quest for a general explanation of aging invites us to consider the underlying theory of systems failure known as reliability theory. The objective of this paper is to probabilistically investigate the trends of human aging in different age groups based on their annual mortality rate due to certain disease. Data of two leading causes of death from 2005 to 2008 were analyzed, to determine the significance of the mortality decrease in individual age group, and the sensitivity of each disease with respect to age.
