Professor Dr. Richard Willis Heard, a longtime and outstanding collaborator of the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History of Bucharest, passed away on November 2, 2022.Richard was born on February 14, 1939 in Savannah, Georgia (USA). He was a graduate of Savannah Country Day School and attended the University of Georgia, receiving his BS and MS degree in Zoology. He received his PhD degree in Biology at the University of Southern Mississippi (1976). He worked for more than 35 years at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (The University of Southern Mississippi), passing through various hierarchical steps, up to that of Head of the Invertebrate Zoology Section. He was drawn to know the marine invertebrates of the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and western Atlantic Ocean. His research focused primarily on the study of peracarid crustaceans. Also he mentored many students and young researchers specializing in marine biology.
Guţu (2016) described a new subfamily, seven new genera and 21 new species in the family Leptocheliidae. However, another five genera and twelve new species, not mentioned by him, were described in 2015 and 2016. Study of the overlooked genera reveals that the morphology of the female of Permixtimella (genus described from both sexes) is similar to those of the type-female of the genus Ektraleptochelia (whose male is unknown). Permixtimella is considered a junior synonym of Ektraleptochelia, which includes two species: E. phoxops and E. oculifurcillata. The place of Ektraleptochelia, Catenarius and Larsmentia within leptocheliid systematics, formerly in the subfamily Catenariinae, is reconsidered and the last genus retained. Some similarities between the females of Nuberis and Bathyleptochelia are presented for the first time. The species Leptochelia acrolophus, L. mexicana, L. ortizi, L. taitungensis and L. grandidentata are transferred to other genera, becoming Chondrochelia acrolophus, C. mexicana, C. ortizi, C. taitungensis and Makassaritanais grandidentatus, respectively. The species Leptochelia pinarensis and L. suhi are considered a junior synonym of Leptochelia forresti and Makassaritanais grandidentatus, respectively.
Rezumat Sunt descrise două specii noi pentru ştiinţă, Calozodion bogoescui şi C. tanzaniense, provenind din apele sud-estice italiene ale Mării Adriatice şi, respectiv, cele tanzaniene ale Oceanului Indian. Prin descrierea speciei C. bogoescui n. sp. este menţionată pentru prima dată prezenţa genului Calozodion Gardiner, 1973 în bazinul mediteranean. Principalele trăsături morfologice caracteristice speciei mediteraneene constau în numărul mic al articulelor endopodului uropodal (numai şapte, în comparaţie cu 13-16, cât au celelalte specii ale genului) şi lungimea mică a merusului chelipedului (comparativ cu cea a carpului). Specia C. tanzaniense n. sp. se deosebeşte de celelalte cunoscute prin următoarea combinaţie de trăsături morfologice: (1) antenula cu trei apofize spiniforme pe marginea externă a primului articul peduncular, (2) antena formată din nouă aticule, (3) bazisul pereopodului II cu sete penate lungi numai pe marginea dorsală, (4) bazisul pereopodelor III şi IV cu câte o apofiză spiniformă pe marginea dorsală şi (5) merusul pereopodului VII cu cinci sete penate lungi pe marginea dorsală. Totodată specia C. dollfusi Guţu, 1989 este transferată în alt gen, devenind Julmarichardia dollfusi (Guţu, 1989), comb. nov., iar în cazul masculilor speciei C. dominiki Bochert, 2012 sunt comentate unele particularităţi morfologice neîntâlnite la alte specii ale genului. În partea finală a lucrării este prezentată cheia de identificare a celor 11 specii ale genului Calozodion.
Makassaritanais, a new subgenus within the leptocheliid genus Pseudonototanais Lang, 1973 is diagnosed and two new species, Pseudonototanais (Makassaritanais) angustus and P. (M.) bamberi, are described, respectively, from the coasts of the islands Kalimantan (Makassar Strait) and Réunion (South-East of the Indian Ocean).Pseudonototanais (M.) modestus (Kussakin & Tzareva, 1972), comb.nov., which was previously considered a synonym of Pseudonototanais werthi (Vanhoffen, 1914), is resurrected and transferred to the new subgenus.Based on these new observations six species of Pseudonototanais are now recognized, three within each of the two subgenera.An identification key for both males and females of the genus Pseudonototanais is presented.Résumé.On décrit le sous-genre nouveau Makassaritanais, du genre Pseudonototanais Lang, 1973 de Leptocheliidae et deux espèces nouvelles, Pseudonototanais (Makassaritanais) angustus et P. The reclassification of the genus Thaicungella Guţu & Angsupanich, 2004 of the family Parapseudidae in family Kalliapseudidae, made by Araujo-Silva & Larsen (2010), is commented.Although it is based on phylogenetic methods, the two authors' conclusion is considered unconvincing.In this respect, it is underlined that in their analysis, no other species of the tribe Pakistanapseudini (where the genus Thaicungella was classified) are included, nor the common features, characteristic to the mentioned tribe.Under these circumstances the arguments which could establish the relationship "degree" between the genus Thaicungella and the other species of the tribe were eliminated.Practically, the main characteristic on which the two authors' conclusion was based was reduced to the presence of dactylar setae on pereopod II (setae which are absent in the other species of the tribe, but present in kalliapseudids), ignoring the numerous differences between the tribe Pakistanapseudini and, implicitly, the genus Thaicungella, and the species classified in family Kalliapseudidae.Also, the mention made by Araujo-Silva & Larsen (op.cit.), by which some affirmations were assigned to the author of present paper (Guţu, 2006) regarding the dactylar setae of the pereopod II in the species Acutihumerus cavooreni is refuted.Résumé.On commente le transfèrement du genre Thaicungella Guţu & Angsupanich, 2004 de la famille Parapseudidae dans la famille Kalliapseudidae fait par Araujo-Silva & Larsen (2010).Bien que basée sur des méthodes philogénétiques, la conclusion des deux auteurs n'est pas considérée convaincante.En ce sens on met en évidence le fait que dans cette analyse on ne retrouve aucune autre espèce de la tribu Pakistanapseudini (où l'on a classifié le genre Thaicungella), mais ni les traits communs, caractéristiques pour les espèces de cette tribu.Dans ces conditions on a éliminé les arguments sur la base desquels on pouvait établir le "degré" de parenté entre le genre Thaicungella et les autres espèces de la tribu.Pratiquement, la caractéristique principale sur laquelle s'est basée la conclusion des deux spécialistes a été réduite à la présence des sètes au niveau du dactyle des péréopode II (sètes qui sont absentes chez les autres espèces de la tribu, mais présentes chez les kalliapseudides), en ignorant les nombreuses différences entre la tribu Pakistanapseudini et, d'une manière implicite, entre le genre Thaicungella et les espèces classifiées dans la famille Kalliapseudidae.Dans un autre ordre d'idées, on commente la fausse mention insérée par Araujo-Silva & Larsen (op.cit.), par laquelle on attribue à l'auteur du présent travail des affirmations que celui-ci (Guţu, 2006) n'a pas fait, concernant les sètes dactylaires du péréopode II de l'espèce Acutihumerus cavooreni.
A new genus and two new species of leptocheliids from the marine shallow waters of Indonesia (Crustacea: Tanaidacea: Tanaidomorpha) Neoleptochelia javaensis n. g., n. sp. and Leptochelia helenae n. sp. from the marine shallow waters of the Indonesian Archipelago are described and illustrated. By the big length of male cheliped the genus Neoleptochelia n. g. is similar to the species of the Leptochelia-minuta "group". The main characteristics of the new genus consist in the size and configuration of uropod (short and thick), the length of pereopod II dactylus (shorter than unguis) and of the distosternal seta of pereopods III and IV carpus, in females (longer than propodus and dactylus combined). Although the females of L. helenae n. sp. are similar to those of L. daggi Bamber, 2005, the males of these two species are totally different. So, while the male cheliped of L. daggi is similar to that of the species included in the Leptochelia-dubia "group", that of the species L. helenae n. sp. is similar to the Leptochelia-minuta "group".
The redescription of the species Leptochelia bispinosa Guţu and L. corsica Dollfus, and the first description of the female of L. tenuicula Makkaveeva (Crustacea: Tanaidacea) Leptochelia bispinosa Guţu, 2010 (from Réunion Island, Indian Ocean) and L. corsica Dollfus, 1898 (from Adriatic Sea) are redescribed and illustrated. The number of antennule articles in the specimens with female features belonging to the species L. bispinosa is commented. The female of L. tenuicula Makkaveeva, 1968 (from Martinique Island, Lesser Antilles) is recorded and described for the first time. At the same time, the diagnosis of the genus Leptochelia, as it is accepted now, is amended.
Leptochelia Vatulelensis(Crustacea: Tanaidacea), A New Species From Anchialine Caves of the South-Western PacificLeptochelia vatulelensisn. sp., discovered on the small islands of Vatulele (Fijian group) and Ouvéa (Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia), is described and illustrated. The new species is distinguished from the others of the"Leptochelia-dubiagroup" (to which it is generally similar) by the following combination of morphological characteristics: (1) the presence of three to four distal setae on the maxilliped basis; (2) merus of pereopods III and IV with only a distosternal seta; (3) endopod of the uropods formed of four (rarely three) articles; (4) males with two (sometimes three) relatively short aesthetascs on the first five articles of the antennular flagellum; (5) male cheliped with a diminished dimorphism; (6) males with a vertical comb-row of setae on the cheliped propodus. Although it inhabits inland, anchialine caves, the new species lacks morphological features that are characteristic of some cave species.
Some remarks on the family Tanzanapseudidae, with the description of three new species and the validation of the genus Acanthapseudes Roman, 1976 (Crustacea: Tanaidacea: Apseudomorpha) Two new species of the genus Tanzanapseudes Băcescu, 1975 (T. bacescui n. sp. and T. mirificus n. sp.) and one belonging to the genus Acanthapseudes Roman, 1976 (A. hansgeorgmuelleri n. sp.) from the islands Sri Lanka and Mauritius (Indian Ocean) are described and illustrated, as a result of the synonymization invalidation of the genus Acanthapseudes with Tanzanapseudes. At the same time, some morphological data on a doubtful species of the genus Tanzanapseudes (from Mozambique Channel) are presented, and manca I and II stages in T. mirificus n. sp. and manca I in A. hansgeorgmuelleri n. sp. are described, unknown in tanzanapseudids up to now. Also, new diagnoses (of the family Tanzanapseudidae and of the two genera), as well as the identification key of the genera and species of the above-mentioned family are presented.
Two new genera and species of apseudomorph tanaidaceans from the Thai waters of the Andaman Sea are described (Biropalostoma spinijierum n. g., n. sp. and Thaicungella lideeiensis n. g., n. sp.). Although they belong to the family Parapseudidae, the two genera have some morphological features which resemble species of the genus Pectinapseudes BBcescu and Williams, 1988, of the family Apseudidae (by the presence of some spiniform structures on the outer margin of the mandibles, as in Biropalostoma n. g.) and those of the family Kalliapseudidae (by the presence of the "aesthetascs" at the pereopods level, as in Thaicungella n. g.). pp. 29-44
By its morphological features fossil superfamily Cretitanaoidea has less affinities with the suborder Tanaidomorpha (in which it was included) than with the species of Apseudomorpha. In conclusion it is proposed this superfamily to be transferred in the suborder Apseudomorpha, which, by this changing, consists of the following three superfamilies: Jurapseudoidea, Cretitanaoidea and Apseudoidea. Vol. XLVI RCsumC. Par ses charactkres morphologiques la suprafamille Cretitanaoidea a moins affinitks avec le sous-ordre Tanaidomorpha (ou elle a Cte incluse) que les especes d'Apseudomorpha. En conclusion, on propose le transfert de cette suprafamille dans le sous-ordre Apseudomorpha qui aura les suivantes trois suprafamilles: Jurapseudoidea, Cretitanaoidea et Apseudoidea.
