The objective of Experiment 1 was to determine protein degradation in the rumen and amino acid supply to and absorption of amino acids from the intestine of lactating dairy cows receiving supplements of soybean meal or a combination of dehydrated alfalfa and corn gluten meal. Four lactating Holstein cows, fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulae, were used in a switchback experiment. Two diets consisting of 50% corn silage and 50% concentrate were fed. One diet contained soybean meal and the other contained a mixture of dehydrated alfalfa and corn gluten meal. It was estimated that 76% of the dietary protein was degraded in the rumen with the soybean meal diet compared with 62% with the dehydrated alfalfa:gluten meal diet. Flow of total amino acids to the duodenum was 13% higher for the dehydrated alfalfa:gluten meal than for the soybean meal diet.
The 82nd Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association will be held at University of Missouri, Columbia, June 21-24, 1987. All members of the Association are encouraged to present papers. Abstracts must be received by division chairperson no later than February 15, 1986. Abstracts of papers for student competition should be accompanied by a letter of intent. Type the abstract on the form supplied by the ADSA Executive Secretary according to directions on the form; submit original and four copies to the chairperson of the division. Follow style of the Journal; refer to abstracts published in the 1986 Journal Supplement for guidance. Indicate clearly in the title the nature of the research and in the abstract objectives, design, and major results. Make the data meaningful with brief essential statistics. Papers must have sufficient substance to justify presentation, but the author(s) should also exercise care not to try to present too much factual material for the audience to comprehend. Only 12 minutes are allotted to develop and communicate the ideas to the audience. If critical data are to be exposed fully, only one, two, or possibly three major points can be developed fully. Presentation of material in 12 minutes that is of such scope as to require 30 minutes for its full revelation is a disservice to the audience. More attention should be given to providing an opportunity for discussion and questions following paper presentations. Abstracts of research accepted for publication by a scientific journal before the annual meeting are not acceptable. The Program Committee favors the general policy that a person present only one paper. If the total number of papers submitted by the membership is too great to include in the program, the Committee will assign some papers to be read by title only. Stimulating the highest quality of applied and fundamental research is the goal of the Committee. Mathematical and statistical units should be rechecked to avoid costly corrections in final printing. Careful experimental design and interpretation of results are necessary prerequisites. Compliance with the instructions for preparation of abstracts will simplify tasks of the Program Committee and of the Editor's offices. Careful editing of abstracts before submission is essential. Mimeographed copies (200) of pertinent details and data are desirable for distribution at the time of presentation. Projected material, such as 2 x 2 slides, should include large lettering for easy reading. Names and addresses of the chairpersons to whom abstracts should be sent are given below. If acknowledgment of the receipt of the abstract is not received by March 15, the appropriate chairperson should be contacted.
Potato (Solanum tuberoswn L.) vines were studied to determine if they could be successfully ensiled and fed to ruminant animals. Russet Burbank potato vine and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silages were fed to goats (Capra hircus) to measure in vivo digestibility and to determine if potato glycoalkaloids were aversive or toxic. No differences in the feeding patterns between control and experimental animals were observed. Alfalfa silage was more digestible than the Russet Burbank potato vine silage due to a higher content of digestible cell wall materials. Digestibility differences between potato clones and harvest dates were found when in vivo digestibility tests were performed. W729R was the most digestible clone studied, especially for the early harvest dates. Most of the clones had vines that were more digestible, in vitro, than alfalfa. Vine glycoalkaloid contents of the experimental clones were similar to the values reported in the literature. There was no apparent correlation between vine glycoalkaloid content and percent digestible dry matter. A positive correlation of 0.38 between digestible dry matter and dry vine yield was found. Potato vine silage, produced after pressing the vines to remove water, was an acceptable feed for ruminant animals. Additional in vivo testing is necessary to determine if toxic effects due to glycoalkaloids or pesticides from long term feeding will be a problem.
In Exp. 1, 24 yearling Holstein steers averaging 340 kg were fed either an alfalfa hay diet at a maintenance level of metabolizable energy (ME) intake or corn silage-corn diets at one, two or three times maintenance ME intake. After a 42-day adjustment period, steers were fed individually, and digestibilities of total alpha-glucosides, starch oligosaccharides and glucose were determined at 2-week intervals, with chromic oxide used as an indicator. Steers fed the alfalfa hay diet had higher (P less than .05) total tract digestibilities of total alpha-glucosides and starch than steers fed the corn diets. Fecal starch (percentage of dry matter) in steers fed the corn diets increased (P less than .05) from approximately 11 to 31% as level of ME intake increased from one to three times maintenance. Starch digestibilities for the corn diets fed at one, two and three times maintenance were 81.4, 76.4 and 76.0%, respectively. However, these trends toward reduced starch digestibilities were not significant. There appeared to be no apparent adaption of alpha-glucoside digestibility in the total digestive tract among steers fed different levels of corn over the intervals observed. In Exp. 2, four Holstein steers (350 KH) were each fitted with duodenal and ileal reentrant cannulas and fed either a low or a high level of corn. Alpha-glucoside intakes for animals given the low and high levels of cord averaged 1.7 and 3.2 kg, respectively. Steers fed the high level of corn digested more (p less than .05) alpha-glucoside in the total tract (2.9 vs 1.6 kg), reticulo-rumen (2.3 vs 1.2 kg) and large intestine level of corn. Steers fed the high level of corn also digested more corn in the small intestine (.415 vs .221 kg) than steers fed the lower level; however, differences were not significant. Although there were trends toward lower partial digestion coefficients (expressed as a percentage of alpha-glucoside presented to that segment) in the total tract, reticulo-rumen and small intestine for steers fed the high corn diet, the magnitude of the differences was not significant.

Four trials involved intravenous or intramuscular injections of lc~-hydroxy- vitamin D3 to test efficacy in preventing parturient paresis. Use of .1 mg intrave- nously afforded total protection com- pared with an incidence of 33% (2/6) in controls. Intramuscular injections of .1 mg in 2 ml propylene glycol and .3, .5, and 1.0 mg in 5 ml corn oil resulted in 0, 16.7, 20, and 0% incidence of parturient paresis compared with 33, 16.7, 37.5, and 37.5% incidence of parturient paresis in the controls. There was a rapid increase in serum calcium (12 to 24 h) in response to intravenous treatment, whereas the re- sponse to intramuscular injections was gradual but was maintained longer. To evaluate the safety of l&-hydroxy- vitamin D3, eight cows, two per treat- ment, were given intramuscular doses of .5, 1.0, 1.5, or 3.0 mg (three 1.0 mg injections) in 5 ml corn oil. No clinical or pathological evidence of hypervitaminosis D or soft tissue calcification was found. Tissue taken from the injection site 15 days after last injection contained 3 to 38 IU vitamin D activity per 100 g wet tissue compared with control of 8 to 15 IU per 100 g. Total vitamin D activity of milk taken the 11th milking postpartum from cows receiving .5 or 1.0 mg had a mean of 13.4 and 22.6 IU vitamin D activity per liter compared to 19 IU per liter for control milk. Abstract Four goats were in three single-reversal experiments to study effects of feeding ammonium chloride on various nutritional and physiological parameters. In Experiment I, feeding .56 g of ammonium chloride per day per kilogram body weight to lactating goats fed a ration having a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 3:l resulted in a reduced calcium retention and no change in phosphorus retention. In Experiments II and III, ingestion of .33 g of ammonium chloride per day per kilogram body weight by nonlactating goats fed a diet with calcium-to-phosphorus ratios of 3.4:l and 6.4:1 resulted in no change in calcium or phosphorus retention. Results which consistently accompanied treatment with ammonium chloride during each experiment were: (1) a decrease in dry matter intake, (2) a decrease in urine pH, (3) an increase in total grams of urine excreted per day, and (4) an increase in total urinary acretion of nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, chloride, strontium, and zinc.
Redistribution of nitrogen, when isonitrogenous levels of urea (.5%) or diammonium phosphate (1.1%) were added with 0, .125, .25, .5 and 1.0% sodium bentonite to whole corn plants at ensiling, was studied in 33 pilot silos in Experiment I. In Experiment II, redistribution of 15N urea added to corn plant tissue harvested at 28.8 (low dry matter), 36.4 (medium dry matter) and 49.0% (high dry matter) dry matter was studied. Bentonite was added at 0, .25, .5 and 1.0% to the medium dry matter material. All treatments were ensiled in pilot silos designed to permit collection of gas and seepage fractions.
