Aim: To determine the number of people having swallowing difficulties among traumatic brain injury patient. Methods: This is a quantitative type of cross-sectional survey study where 117 samples were assigned purposively from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire (SDQ) was used for the study. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis (SPSS = Statistics package for social science) method. Results: On an average, most of the participants 90.60% (106) were males and other participants 9.40% (11) were females. The maximum numbers of participants 25.6% (30) were in the age range 18–27 years. The majority numbers of participants 33.30% (39) were at secondary level education. The maximum numbers of respondents 22.20% (26) found were day laborer (driver, rickshaw puller, and masons). Most of the participants 63.20% (74) had injuries in 0–2 months earlier. Among 117 participants, 76 (64.95%) participants had no swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and 41 (35.05%) participants had swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Conclusions: Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) is a common problem in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Researchers explored the prevalence of swallowing difficulty among TBI patients. In this study, among 117 participants most of the participants 90.60% (106) were males and 9.40% (11) participants were females. So, swallowing difficulty is common in TBI patients who are associated with other condition of swallowing. According to SDQ score among 117 participants, (35.05%) participants had swallowing difficulties. So, TBI patients are vulnerable for presence of swallowing difficulties.
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a major cause of disability and morbidity throughout the world and Asia. The association between CSCI and voice difficulties is clinically well-recognized. So this study was meant to determine the impacts on voice following CSCI. The study aimed to determine the impacts on voice following Cervical Spinal Cord Injury (CSCI). Additionally includes finding out the proportion of voice difficulties among CSCI patients, to identify the number of functional, physical, and emotional impacts on voice after CSCI, and to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the study population. This study was conducted by using a cross-sectional prospective survey method at the SCI unit of CRP. Participants were selected by using purposive sampling. The result states from the research that CSCI is more common in males than females and nearly half of the person has physical, emotional, and functional impacts on voice after CSCI. Among participants, the maximum participants 22.5% (18) rated their voice problem at a moderate level (VHI=11-20) after CSCI and 11.3% (9) participants faced voice problems at a very severe level, 13.8% (11) participants had severe level voice problem. The association between surgeries happened or not happened and the severity of voice problems among CSCI patients showed statistically non-significant. Patients with cervical spinal cord injury faces several clinical problems in our country, whereas nearly most of them experience mild to moderate voice deficits secondary to poor respiratory support. In Bangladesh, Speech & Language Therapy services for SCI patients are newly introduced in the last few years. So for providing proper comprehensive services to SCI patients the monitoring of communicative function from the acute phase to the community reintegration phase is essential.
In Bangladesh many head neck cancer patients are suffering different complications including speech difficulties after completing treatment. This study represents the prevalence of speech handicap among patients treated for head neck cancer in Bangladesh. This study was aiming to find out the prevalence of speech handicap among patients treated for head neck cancer in Bangladesh. A descriptive type of cross sectional study of 70 participants was conducted. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling procedure. Data were collected from 70 participants through face to face interview. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. More than half of the participants 60% were male and highest number participants, 36% (25) were in the age range of ≥60 years. The highest number of participants 36% was found as diagnosed in the anatomic of site of buccal mucosa and they 14 rated their speech at severe level and 12 at moderate to severe level. Among the tongue cancer diagnosed participants 7 rated their speech as severe level, 9 at moderate to severe level. Among the larynx cancer diagnosed participants 5 were rated their speech at severe level, 12 rated as moderate to severe level and 2 rated as within normal limit. Among the participants those were diagnosed as cancer in the palate 2 rated their speech at severe level and 5 were rated as moderate to severe level. This study helps to establish a collaborative treatment approach for head neck cancer patients and improve the referral system to speech & language therapy services in Bangladesh.
