Importance:Universal administration of hepatitis B (HepB) vaccine at birth is a cornerstone for hepatitis B virus (HBV) elimination efforts in the US. In 2025, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended delaying HepB vaccine initiation among infants born to birth parents who tested negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Objective:To evaluate the health and economic impact of delaying HepB vaccination among US infants. Design, Setting, and Participants:A Markov model of HBV infections was acquired among a cohort infants, born in 2025, up to age 18 years. The model incorporated HBsAg prevalence among birthing parents, HBsAg testing during pregnancy or delivery, vertical or perinatal and household or community HBV transmission among children, and sequalae from chronic infection. This study was conducted in the US. Exposures:Eight scenarios in which the first HepB dose was delayed at intervals between 2 months and 12 years, applied either only to infants born to birth parents who tested negative for HBsAg or to parents who either tested negative for HBsAg or had unknown HBsAg status. All delayed vaccination scenarios were compared with administering first HepB dose at birth. Scenarios were modeled with perfect and imperfect adherence to recommendations. Main Outcomes and Measures:Outcomes included acute and chronic HBV infections acquired until age 18 years, additional associated lifetime HBV-related morbidity and mortality, and health care costs (2025 US dollars). Results:The health and economic outcomes of 3 628 934 infants were modeled in this analysis. All delayed vaccination scenarios resulted in more infections, worse health outcomes, and higher costs than administering first HepB dose at birth. Under perfect adherence, delaying HepB vaccination by 2 months for infants of parents negative for HBsAg led to an additional 90 acute infections (range, 16-107), 76 chronic infections (range, 14-97), 29 HBV-related deaths (range, 6-53), with $16.4 million in added costs for infants born during 1 year. Delaying to 12 years resulted in an additional 190 acute infections (range, 61-233), 50 deaths (range, 15-83), and nearly $30 million in added costs. Delaying HepB vaccination among infants of parents with unknown HBsAg status or imperfect adherence to the vaccination schedule amplified all negative outcomes. Conclusions and Relevance:Results of this economic evaluation quantified the potential impact of changing ACIP recommendations. Even brief delays in HepB vaccine initiation were associated with a substantial increase in HBV infections, adverse health outcomes, and health care costs.
Children who acquire hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in early childhood through perinatal, household or community exposures are at highest risk of all age groups for experiencing chronic infection and premature death. Universal administration of hepatitis B (HepB) vaccine for all infants <24 hours of birth and completing the childhood series remains the cornerstone for HBV elimination efforts in the United States. We evaluated the health and economic impact of delaying HepB vaccination among U.S. infants. We constructed a Markov model to simulate lifetime health outcomes and costs for the 3,628,934 infants born in the United States in 2024 for HBV infections acquired up to age 18 years. The model incorporated hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) prevalence among birthing parents, percentage of pregnant parents tested for HBsAg during pregnancy or at delivery, vertical/perinatal and household/community HBV infection risks among children, and resulting sequalae from chronic infection. Eight delayed vaccination scenarios were evaluated in which the first HepB dose was given at 2 months, 7 months, 4 years, or 12 years, applied either only to infants born to HBsAg-negative birth parent or to both HBsAg-negative and HBsAg-unknown birthing parents. Outcomes included acute and chronic HBV infections, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, HBV-related deaths, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), life-years, and total healthcare costs from the healthcare system perspective. We modeled scenarios with perfect and imperfect adherence to the HepB vaccination schedule, and scenarios with or without additional HBV screening costs for those with delayed receipt of HepB vaccine. All delayed vaccination scenarios resulted in more infections, worse health outcomes, and higher costs than the current universal birth dose recommendation. Under perfect adherence, delaying HepB vaccination by 2 months for infants of HBsAg-negative parents led to an additional 90 acute infections, 75 chronic infections, 29 HBV-related deaths, with $16.4 million in added costs for infants born during one year. Delaying to 12 years resulted in an additional 190 acute infections, 50 deaths, and nearly $30 million in added costs. Delaying HepB vaccination to 12 years for infants of both HBsAg-negative and HBsAg-unknown parents resulted in an additional 2,351 acute infections, 744 deaths, and $368 million in excess costs. Imperfect adherence to the vaccination schedule amplified all negative outcomes substantially. Incorporating pre-vaccination serologic screening for delayed schedules markedly increased total costs. Even brief delays in HepB vaccine initiation substantially increase HBV infections, adverse health outcomes, and health system costs. Our results quantify and demonstrate the importance of the universal HepB birth dose in preventing perinatal and early childhood HBV transmission in the United States. We constructed a Markov model to evaluate health and economic outcomes for the 3.6 million infants born in 2024 under eight scenarios that delayed the first hepatitis B (HepB) vaccine dose to 2 months, 7 months, 4 years, or 12 years. All delayed schedules increased acute and chronic infections, HBV-related deaths, and healthcare costs compared with the current universal HepB birth-dose policy. For a single year of delaying the HepB birth dose to 2 months among infants whose birth parents are not known to be living with hepatitis B, we estimate 1,437 preventable hepatitis B infections among children, 304 cases of liver cancer, 482 HBV-related deaths, and over $222 million in excess healthcare costs. For a single year of delaying the HepB birth dose to 12 years among infants whose birth parents are not known to be living with hepatitis B, we estimate 2,726 preventable hepatitis B infections among children, 503 cases of liver cancer, 788 HBV-related deaths, and over $313 million in excess healthcare costs. Our results demonstrate and quantify the critical role of timely universal HepB birth dose vaccination in preventing childhood HBV transmission.
BackgroundThe reported incidence of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is increasing among persons of childbearing age in the United States. Infants born to pregnant persons with HCV infection are at risk for perinatal HCV acquisition. In 2020, the United States Preventive Services Task Force and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all pregnant persons be screened during each pregnancy for hepatitis C. However, there are limited data on trends in hepatitis C testing during pregnancy. ObjectiveWe estimated hepatitis C testing rates in a large cohort of patients with Medicaid and commercial insurance who gave birth during 2015-2019 and described demographic and risk-based factors associated with testing. MethodsMedicaid and commercial insurance claims for patients aged 15-44 years and who gave birth between 2015 and 2019 were included. Birth claims were identified using procedure and diagnosis codes for vaginal or cesarean delivery. Hepatitis C testing was defined as an insurance claim during the 42 weeks before delivery. Testing rates were calculated among patients who delivered and among the subset of patients who were continuously enrolled for 42 weeks before delivery. We also compared the timing of testing relative to delivery among patients with commercial or Medicaid insurance. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with testing. ResultsAmong 1,142,770 Medicaid patients and 1,207,132 commercially insured patients, 175,223 (15.3%) and 221,436 (18.3%) were tested for hepatitis C during pregnancy, respectively. Testing rates were 89,730 (21.8%) and 187,819 (21.9%) among continuously enrolled Medicaid and commercially insured patients, respectively. Rates increased from 2015 through 2019 among Medicaid (from 20,758/108,332, 19.2% to 13,971/52,330, 26.8%) and commercially insured patients (from 38,308/211,555, 18.1% to 39,152/139,972, 28%), respectively. Among Medicaid patients, non-Hispanic Black (odds ratio 0.73, 95% CI 0.71-0.74) and Hispanic (odds ratio 0.53, 95% CI 0.51-0.56) race or ethnicity were associated with lower odds of testing. Opioid use disorder, HIV infection, and high-risk pregnancy were associated with higher odds of testing in both Medicaid and commercially insured patients. ConclusionsHepatitis C testing during pregnancy increased from 2015 through 2019 among patients with Medicaid and commercial insurance, although tremendous opportunity for improvement remains. Interventions to increase testing among pregnant persons are needed.
The elimination of hepatitis C is a national priority (https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/Viral-Hepatitis-National-Strategic-Plan-2021-2025.pdf). During 2010-2021, hepatitis C virus (HCV) acute and chronic infections (hereinafter referred to as HCV infections) increased in the United States, consequences of which include cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death. Rates of acute infections more than tripled among reproductive-aged persons during this time (from 0.8 to 2.5 per 100,000 population among persons aged 20-29 years and from 0.6 to 3.5 among persons aged 30-39 years). Because acute HCV infection can lead to chronic infection, this has resulted in increasing rates of HCV infections during pregnancy. Approximately 6%-7% of perinatally exposed (i.e., exposed during pregnancy or delivery) infants and children will acquire HCV infection. Curative direct-acting antiviral therapy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for persons aged ≥3 years. However, many perinatally infected children are not tested or linked to care. In 2020, because of continued increases in HCV infections in the United States, CDC released universal screening recommendations for adults, which included recommendations for screening for pregnant persons during each pregnancy (Schillie S, Wester C, Osborne M, Wesolowski L, Ryerson AB. CDC recommendations for hepatitis C screening among adults-United States, 2020. MMWR Recomm Rep 2020;69[No. RR-2]:1-17). This report introduces four new CDC recommendations: 1) HCV testing of all perinatally exposed infants with a nucleic acid test (NAT) for detection of HCV RNA at age 2-6 months; 2) consultation with a health care provider with expertise in pediatric hepatitis C management for all infants and children with detectable HCV RNA; 3) perinatally exposed infants and children with an undetectable HCV RNA result at or after age 2 months do not require further follow-up unless clinically warranted; and 4) a NAT for HCV RNA is recommended for perinatally exposed infants and children aged 7-17 months who previously have not been tested, and a hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) test followed by a reflex NAT for HCV RNA (when anti-HCV is reactive) is recommended for perinatally exposed children aged ≥18 months who previously have not been tested. Proper identification of perinatally infected children, referral to care, and curative treatment are critical to achieving the goal of hepatitis C elimination.
Objective To determine the optimal testing strategy to identify children with perinatally acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Study design We used a decision-tree framework with a Markov disease progression model to conduct an economic analysis of 4 strategies, based on combinations of type and timing of test: anti-HCV with reflex to HCV RNA at 18 months among children known to be perinatally exposed (ie, baseline comparison strategy); HCV RNA testing at 2-6 months among infants known to be perinatally exposed (test strategy 1); universal anti-HCV with reflex to HCV RNA at 18 months among all children (test strategy 2); and universal HCV RNA testing at 2-6 months among all infants (test strategy 3). We estimated total cost, quality-adjusted life years, and disease sequalae for each strategy. Results Each of the 3 alternative testing strategies resulted in an increased number of children tested and improved health outcomes. HCV RNA testing at 2-6 months (test strategy 1) was cost-saving and resulted in a population-level difference in cost of $469 671. The 2 universal testing strategies resulted in an increase in quality-adjusted life years and an increase in total costs. Conclusions Testing of perinatally exposed infants at age 2-6 months with a single HCV RNA test will reduce costs and improve health outcomes, preventing morbidity and mortality associated with complications from perinatal HCV infections.
Hepatitis A virus can cause severe and prolonged illness in persons with HIV (PWH). In July 2020, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) expanded its recommendation for hepatitis A vaccination to include all PWH aged ≥1 year. We used a decision analytic model to estimate the value of vaccinating a cohort of adult PWH aged ≥20 years with diagnosed HIV in the United States using a limited societal perspective. The model compared 3 scenarios over an analytic horizon of 1 year: no vaccination, current vaccine coverage, and full vaccination. We incorporated the direct medical costs and nonmedical costs (i.e., public health costs and productivity loss). We estimated the total number of infections averted, cost to vaccinate, and incremental cost per case averted. Full implementation of the ACIP recommendation resulted in 775 to 812 fewer adult cases of hepatitis A in 1 year compared with the observed vaccination coverage. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for the full vaccination scenario was $48,000 for the 2-dose single-antigen hepatitis A vaccine and $130,000 for the 3-dose combination hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine per case averted, compared with the observed vaccination scenario. Depending on type of vaccine, full hepatitis A vaccination of PWH could lead to ≥80% reduction in the number of cases and $48,000 to $130,000 in additional cost per case averted. Data on hepatitis A health outcomes and costs specific to PWH are needed to better understand the longer-term costs and benefits of the 2020 ACIP recommendation.
Objectives: Although many people who are incarcerated have risk factors for hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, the proportion of hepatitis A cases among people with a recent incarceration is unknown. We examined the relationship between recent incarceration and HAV infection during community-based, person-to-person outbreaks to inform public health recommendations. Methods: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed health departments in 33 jurisdictions reporting person-to-person HAV outbreaks during 2016-2020 on the number of outbreak-associated cases, HAV-infected people recently incarcerated, and HAV-associated hospitalizations and deaths. Results: Twenty-five health departments reported 18 327 outbreak-associated hepatitis A cases during January 11, 2016–January 24, 2020. In total, 2093 (11.4%) HAV-infected people had been recently incarcerated. Of those with complete data, 1402 of 1462 (95.9%) had been held in a local jail, and 1513 of 1896 (79.8.%) disclosed hepatitis A risk factors. Eighteen jurisdictions reported incarceration timing relative to the exposure period. Of 9707 cases in these jurisdictions, 991 (10.2%) were among recently incarcerated people; 451 of 688 (65.6%) people with complete data had been incarcerated during all (n = 55) or part (n = 396) of their exposure period. Conclusions: Correctional facilities are important settings for reaching people with risk factors for HAV infection and can also be venues where transmission occurs. Providing HAV vaccination to incarcerated people, particularly people housed in jails, can be an effective component of community-wide outbreak response.
During 1990-2019, universal infant and childhood vaccination for hepatitis B resulted in a 99% decline in reported cases of acute hepatitis B among children, adolescents, and young adults aged <19 years in the United States; however, during 2010-2019, cases of acute hepatitis B plateaued or increased among adults aged ≥40 years. We conducted a topical review of surveillance strategies that will be critical to support the elimination of hepatitis B as a public health threat in the United States. In 2019, notifiable disease surveillance for acute hepatitis B showed continued transmission, especially among people who inject drugs and people with multiple sexual partners; rates were highest among people who were aged 30-59 years, non-Hispanic White, and living in rural areas. In contrast, newly reported cases of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) were highest among people who were aged 30-49 years, Asian or Pacific Islander, and living in urban areas. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey documented the highest CHB prevalence among non-US-born, non-Hispanic Asian people during 2013-2018; only one-third of people with CHB were aware of their infection. In the context of universal adult vaccination (2022) and screening (2023) recommendations for hepatitis B, better data are needed to support programmatic strategies to improve (1) vaccination rates among people with behaviors that put them at risk for transmission and (2) screening and linkage to care among non-US-born people. Surveillance for hepatitis B needs to be strengthened throughout the health care and public health systems.
OBJECTIVES:The incidence of hepatitis A declined in the United States following the introduction of hepatitis A vaccines, before increasing in the setting of recent widespread outbreaks associated with person-to-person transmission. We describe the hepatitis A epidemiology in the United States, identify susceptible populations over time, and demonstrate the need for improved hepatitis A vaccination coverage, especially among adults at increased risk for hepatitis A. METHODS:We calculated the hepatitis A incidence rates for sociodemographic characteristics and percentages for risk factors and clinical outcomes for hepatitis A cases reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System during 1990-2020. We generated nationally representative estimates and 95% CIs of hepatitis A seroprevalence during 1976-March 2020 and self-reported hepatitis A vaccination coverage during 1999-March 2020 for the noninstitutionalized civilian US population using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RESULTS:Overall, the rate per 100 000 population of reported cases of hepatitis A virus infection in the United States declined 17.3-fold, from 10.4 during 1990-1998 to 0.6 during 2007-2015, and then increased to 2.8 during 2016-2020. The overall hepatitis A seroprevalence in the United States increased from 38.2% (95% CI, 36.2%-40.1%) during 1976-1980 to 47.3% (95% CI, 45.4%-49.2%) during 2015-March 2020. The prevalence of self-reported hepatitis A vaccination coverage in the United States increased more than 2.5-fold, from 16.3% (95% CI, 15.0%-17.7%) during 1999-2006 to 41.9% (95% CI, 40.2%-43.7%) during 2015-March 2020. CONCLUSIONS:Hepatitis A epidemiology in the United States changed substantially during 1976-2020. Improved vaccination coverage, especially among adults recommended for vaccination by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, is vital to stop current hepatitis A outbreaks associated with person-to-person transmission in the United States and prevent similar future recurrences.
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can lead to substantial morbidity and mortality. Although treatment is not considered curative, antiviral treatment, monitoring, and liver cancer surveillance can reduce morbidity and mortality. Effective vaccines to prevent hepatitis B are available. This report updates and expands CDCs' previously published Recommendations for Identification and Public Health Management of Persons with Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection (MMWR Recomm Rep 2008;57[No. RR-8]) regarding screening for HBV infection in the United States. New recommendations include hepatitis B screening using three laboratory tests at least once during a lifetime for adults aged >= 18 years. The report also expands risk-based testing recommendations to include the following populations, activities, exposures, or conditions associated with increased risk for HBV infection: persons incarcerated or formerly incarcerated in a jail, prison, or other detention setting; persons with a history of sexually transmitted infections or multiple sex partners; and persons with a history of hepatitis C virus infection. In addition, to provide increased access to testing, anyone who requests HBV testing should receive it, regardless of disclosure of risk, because many persons might be reluctant to disclose stigmatizing risks.
Background: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) carries an increased risk of death from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases recommends patients with CHB receive monitoring of disease activity, including ALT, hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg), and liver imaging for patients who experience an increased risk for HCC. HBV antiviral therapy is recommended for patients with active hepatitis and cirrhosis. Methods: Monitoring and treatment of adults with new CHB diagnoses were analyzed using Optum Clinformatics Data Mart Database claims data from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2019. Results: Among 5978 patients with new CHB diagnosis, only 56% with cirrhosis and 50% without cirrhosis had claims for≥1 ALT and either HBV DNA or HBeAg test, and among patients recommended for HCC surveillance, 82% with cirrhosis and 57% without cirrhosis had claims for≥1 liver imaging within 12 months of diagnosis. Although antiviral treatment is recommended for patients with cirrhosis, only 29% of patients with cirrhosis had≥1 claim for HBV antiviral therapy within 12 months of CHB diagnosis. Multivariable analysis showed patients who were male, Asian, privately insured, or had cirrhosis were more likely (P<0.05) to receive ALT and either HBV DNA or HBeAg tests and HBV antiviral therapy within 12 months of diagnosis. Conclusion: Many patients diagnosed with CHB are not receiving the clinical assessment and treatment recommended. A comprehensive initiative is needed to address the patient, provider, and system-related barriers to improve the clinical management of CHB.
Background: The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends testing all pregnant women for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and testing HBsAg-positive pregnant women for hepatitis B virus deoxyribonucleic acid (HBV DNA). HBsAg-positive pregnant persons are recommended by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases to receive regular monitoring, including alanine transaminase (ALT) and HBV DNA and antiviral therapy for active hepatitis and to prevent perinatal HBV transmission if HBV DNA level is >200,000 IU/mL.Methods: Using Optum Clinformatics Data Mart Database claims data, pregnant women who received HBsAg testing and HBsAg-positive pregnant persons who received HBV DNA and alt testing and antiviral therapy during pregnancy and after delivery during January 1, 2015 -December 31, 2020 were analyzed.Results: Among 506,794 pregnancies, 14.6% did not receive HBsAg testing. Pregnant women more likely to receive testing for HBsAg (p<0.01) were persons aged & GE;20 years, were Asian, had >1 child, or received education beyond high school. Among the 0.28% (1,437) pregnant women who tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen, 46% were Asian. The proportion of HBsAg-positive pregnant women who received HBV DNA testing during pregnancy and in the 12 months after delivery was 44.3% and 28.6%, respectively; the proportion that received hepatitis B e antigen was 31.6% and 12.7%, respectively; the proportion that received ALT testing was 67.4% and 47%, respectively; and the proportion that received HBV antiviral therapy was 7% and 6.2%, respectively.Conclusions: This study suggests that as many as half a million (& drangbrac;14%) pregnant persons who gave birth each year were not tested for HBsAg to prevent perinatal transmission. Implementation of risk-based hepatitis B vaccination among adults has been suboptimal. We present an economic evaluation of universal hepatitis B vaccination that informed a revision to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices adult hepatitis B vaccination recommendations. Background Although effective against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, hepatitis B (HepB) vaccination is only recommended for infants, children, and adults at higher risk. We conducted an economic evaluation of universal HepB vaccination among US adults. Methods Using a decision analytic model with Markov disease progression, we compared current vaccination recommendations (baseline) with either 3-dose or 2-dose universal HepB vaccination (intervention strategies). In simulated modeling of 1 million adults distributed by age and risk groups, we quantified health benefits (quality-adjusted life years, QALYs) and costs for each strategy. Multivariable probabilistic sensitivity analyses identified key inputs. All costs reported in 2019 US dollars. Results With incremental base-case vaccination coverage up to 50% among persons at lower risk and 0% increment among persons at higher risk, each of 2 intervention strategies averted nearly one-quarter of acute HBV infections (3-dose strategy, 24.8%; 2-dose strategy, 24.6%). Societal incremental cost per QALY gained of $152 722 (interquartile range, $119 113-$235 086) and $155 429 (interquartile range, $120 302-$242 226) were estimated for 3-dose and 2-dose strategies, respectively. Risk of acute HBV infection showed the strongest influence. Conclusions Universal adult vaccination against HBV may be an appropriate strategy for reducing HBV incidence and improving resulting health outcomes.
Introduction: Over 2 million adults in the United States have hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and it contributes to approximately 14,000 deaths a year. Eight to 12 weeks of highly effective direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment, which can cure >= 95% of cases, is recommended for persons with hepatitis C. Methods: Data from HealthVerity, an administrative claims and encounters database, were used to construct a cohort of adults aged 18-69 years with HCV infection diagnosed during January 30, 2019-October 31, 2020, who were continuously enrolled in insurance for >= 60 days before and >= 360 days after diagnosis (47,687). Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between initiation of DAA treatment and sex, age, race, payor, and Medicaid restriction status; adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% CIs were calculated. Results: The prevalence of DAA treatment initiation within 360 days of the first positive HCV RNA test result among Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance recipients was 23%, 28%, and 35%, respectively; among those treated, 75%, 77%, and 84%, respectively, initiated treatment within 180 days of diagnosis. Adjusted odds of treatment initiation were lower among those with Medicaid (aOR = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.51-0.57) and Medicare (aOR = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.56-0.68) than among those with private insurance. After adjusting for insurance type, treatment initiation was lowest among adults aged 18-29 and 30-39 years with Medicaid or private insurance, compared with those aged 50-59 years. Among Medicaid recipients, lower odds of treatment initiation were found among persons in states with Medicaid treatment re-strictions (aOR = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.74-0.81) than among those in states without restrictions, and among persons whose race was coded as Black or African American (Black) (aOR = 0.93; 95% CI = 0.88-0.99) or other race (aOR = 0.73; 95% CI = 0.62-0.88) than those whose race was coded as White. Conclusions and Implications for Public Health Practice: Few insured persons with diagnosed hepatitis C receive timely DAA treatment, and disparities in treatment exist. Unrestricted access to timely DAA treatment is critical to reducing viral hepatitis-related mortality, disparities, and transmission. Treatment saves lives, prevents transmission, and is cost saving.
Hepatitis B (HepB) vaccines have demonstrated safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy during the past 4 decades (1,2).However, vaccination coverage among adults has been suboptimal, limiting further reduction in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in the United States.This Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation expands the indicated age range for universal HepB vaccination to now include adults aged 19-59 years.Removing the risk factor assessment previously recommended to determine vaccine eligibility in this adult age group (2) could increase vaccination coverage and decrease hepatitis B cases.
