During the last half decade, various theories, concepts, and models have been established to make organizations more environmentally sustainable. The IS community had their share with the Green IS/IT domain. As it turned out most of these concepts took a very functional approach, not making a good fit for business process oriented organizations. To fill this gap the research stream of Green Business Process Management (GBPM) arose. In this paper we develop and discuss various capabilities that organizations should have in order to actually take advantage of GBPM. We call these capabilities GBPM readiness.
Although practitioners have begun to implement Green IT into their companies, the governance of sustainable information systems varies significantly. Only little has been done to explain these differences in Green IT governance. Building upon contingency theory and IT governance, we develop a contingency model for Green IT governance which demonstrates the fit between contingencies and the company-specific configuration of Green IT. In the first step, three archetypes of Green IT governance reaching from centralized over federal to decentralized are presented. In the second step, we identify from literature eight contingency factors determining the ideal type of Green IT governance. The contingency model is validated by a questionnaire using factor and regression analysis With the enhanced understanding of how Green IT governance is shaped by contingency factors, organizations are able to select the most successful Green IT governance form.
The concepts of both business process management (BPM) and Green IS are on the agenda of IS researchers. BPM has a long-lasting legacy from enterprise resource planning and business process re-engineering. Green IS is still a young topic, although significant research progress has been made in recent years. However, in terms of combining the two aspects, there is still a lack of research. While there are some initial papers, concepts, and thoughts about this subject, a clear definition is missing. In this paper, we examine the literature concerning the research streams of Green IS and BPM and combine it with the initial research on Green BPM. Consequently, we present a definition for Green Business Process Management as well as a multidimensional framework for further research. We argue that research should focus on dimensions we could derive from literature in order to close the gaps in the field of Green BPM.
As a reaction to increased competition and higher customer expectations, organizations engage in collaborative networks; the key drivers for this ongoing trend are information and communication technologies. Today, collaborative networks are crucial for the entire network endeavor and rely heavily on IT resources. While the use and management of inter-organizational systems have already been widely studied from a firm’s perspective, there is little research that examines IT-related governance from a network point of view. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review in the field of IT governance in a network context. The review covers 28 publications. Building upon this, we identify four promising fields for future research: networks at the meta-level and linkages among levels, theories for IT governance in networks, the role of relational mechanisms, and (complex) contingency analysis. Finally, we suggest a more balanced use of methods.
In diesem Beitrag wird der Umsetzungsstand von Green IT- Kennzahlen in IT-Organisationen verschiedener Grose und Branchen unter- sucht. Zu diesem Zweck wurden aktuelle Kennzahlen aus der Literatur ent- nommen und auf Grundlage eines Bezugsrahmens den (Prozess-)Bereichen der IT-Beschaffung, der IT-Produktion und des IT-Vertriebs systematisch aufberei- tet. Die Erfassung des Status quo in der Praxis wurde mittels einer Befragung von insgesamt 94 CIOs und IT-Fuhrungskraften aus einer Stichprobe von 822 Unternehmen analysiert. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Unternehmen den Erfolg von Green IT-Masnahmen kennzahlbasiert erfassen und kontrollie- ren konnen, wobei der Einsatz solcher Kenngrosen von der Unternehmensgro- se, der Nachhaltigkeitsorientierung und der Green IT-Expertise abhangig sind.
Based on a three-dimensional morphological analysis approach embedded in an explorative technology roadmapping process, we have developed a framework which is intended to help organize the multitude of entities and functional requirements within the domain of electric mobility. The goal was to gain, in a structured way, a better understanding about this complex field. For that purpose, descriptions and an initial validation of physical interfaces and prospective services in EV scenarios are introduced. An experts' evaluation clearly shows that the framework encompasses all interfaces and service groups existing within an electric vehicle setting. The development of the framework is intended to be a contribution to the energy informatics domain and aims at reducing the electric mobility domain's complexity. Thus it is supposed to encourage market players to get engaged with the domain supporting the shift towards sustainable mobility.
Smart grid technologies (SGT) comprise technologies from various domains, among others information systems (IS). IS can contribute decisively to upgrade the nowadays electromechanically controlled energy systems to electronically controlled networks (Watson, Boudreau and Chen 2010). However, to date the organizational adoption of SGT is rather limited. Thus, we developed a model based upon the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework (Tornatzky and Fleischer 1990) and validated the model based on data collected from 180 German distribution system operators (DSOs). The model explains .62 of the variance in adoption. Our findings suggest that the technological and regulatory context variables are only minor drivers while the organizational context variables have a substantial impact on the adoption decision. Also the control variables firm size and number of industry clients were found to be significant determinants. The paper’s findings will help refining researchers’ understanding of organizational technology adoption and will be useful for stakeholders interested in SGT-diffusion.
In this paper we examine an initial step towards Green Business Process Management. We give insights from a research project with the goal of monitoring and redesigning business processes in an environmentally sustainable manner. Using literature analysis and three case studies we derive suitable languages and software for business process modeling. In addition, we show business processes that can act as key examples for green process monitoring and redesign. The results show that enterprises can build up on process modeling and energy monitoring to become more environmentally sustainable.
In this article, we examine the technology acceptance of cloud computing by analyzing empirical data from 100 CIOs and IT managers from stock indexed companies using factor analysis. For a valid methodological background we use a modified version of the common Technology Acceptance Model. The outcomes indicate that user acceptance of cloud computing can be explained and predicted by various non monetary variables concerning social influence and cognitive instrumental process. In particular, factors such as image, job relevance and perceived usefulness play an important role in cloud computing acceptance. These findings advance theory and contribute to the foundation for future research aimed at improving our understanding of technology adoption behavior. They also provide a structured and more systematic approach for cloud service providers on how to build their services and promoting them to the market.
