Even though traffic safety is very high in the Nordic countries, there are still too many people who die or are severely injured. The Nordic Road Safety Council conducted a questionnaire survey with the purpose to find differences between member countries in inhabitants’ behavior and attitudes in relevant traffic safety fields. The survey focused on speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, use of safety belt, mobile phone use, fatigue, use of bicycle helmets and child restraint systems. Around 5000 people aged 18–74 years old answered the questionnaire. Some of the similarities and differences that were found between the countries are presented. This paper focuses on behavior and attitudes towards speed, drunk driving, and safety belt use.
Bikers are involved in accidents like other road users. Many are injured and killed each year and their propor¬tion of all traffic injuries has increased, mainly due to the doubling of the number of motorcycles in use in the last decade. The past two years show a downward trend of both killed and seriously injured motorcy¬clists. Nationally, a strategy to increase safety for motorcyclists has been developed in collaboration between authorities and organizations. One part of the strategy is to find out how motorcyclists behave in traffic and the attitude among motorcyclists toward different behaviors, protective equipment and other road safety measures. The overall aim of this study is to increase the knowledge of motorcyclists' attitudes to road safety and road safety measures. The survey was conducted through a web-based questionnaire among members of the Swedish Motorcyclists Association, SMC. SMC and The National Society for Road Safety, NTF, develo¬ped and implemented the survey, analyzed the results and wrote the final report.
Just as our transport systems become more and more important to our economic and social well-being, so they become more and more crowded and more at risk from congestion, disruption, and collapse. Technology and engineering can provide part of the solution, but the complete solution will need to take account of the behaviour of the users of the transport networks.The role of psychologists in this is to understand how people make decisions about the alternative modes of transport and about the alternative routes to their destinations, to understand how novice and other vulnerable users can develop safe and effective behaviours, how competent users can operate within the transport system optimally and within their perceptual and cognitive limitations.The contributions to this volume address these issues of how the use of our transport systems can be improved by taking into account knowledge of the behaviour of the people who use the systems. Topics discussed include driver training and licensing, driver impairment, road user attitudes and behaviour, enforcement and behaviour change, driver support systems, and the psychology of mobility and transport mode choice.This work will be of value not only to psychologists but to all transport professionals interested in the application of psychology to traffic

Future on the road is a traffic education project carried out in schools in the Swedish municipality of Arboga. The project has covered six years between the ages 13 to 19, which corresponds to classes 7-9 in primary school and classes 1-3 in upper secondary school. In total, the aim was that the education programme should consist of 120 lectures, i.e. 20 lectures per year. The project has included the total population of students in Arboga, which means that approximately 500 students have been included. The education had a broader perspective than traditional traffic education programmes. The purpose was to influence values and attitudes regarding car usage and choice of transport modes in order to make youngsters more inclined to protect the environment, improve safety in traffic and reduce the community's costs arising through undesired effects of the transport system. This broad perspective covers aspects such as road safety, transport needs, choice of transport modes, pollution and environment, health, economy, etc. The results of the evaluation shows that the education functioned well in the primary school while there were several problems in the secondary school, which lead to a number of problems that reduced the possibility of achieving the goals fully. The results show that it is possible to carry out a road user education project in school but the activities must be built upon a stable and correct foundation. The objective is to formulate guidelines and goals for future development in the area of driver training and education. The content of this paper is not empirical, but merely an analytical summary or review. A four-level descriptive model is presented in which driver behaviour is conceptualised as a hierarchy, in which the goals and motives of the driver play an essential role. The recent constructivist ideas in mainstream pedagogy and psychology of learning are combined with a hierarchical approach to driver behaviour. A comprehensive framework for goals and contents of driver education (GDE framework) is presented. Two main conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, the conceptual analysis points towards a need to emphasise the motivational aspects in driver education more than it is done at present. Secondly, in order to reach the goals, pedagogical methods should be re-evaluated. For example, active learning methods and use of self-reflection should be promoted in driver education.
