The paper offers an overview of the deep-space transponder (DST) equipment that has been developed by Thales Alenia Space-Italy over the last two decades in the framework of various European programs. It briefly describes major achievements, technologies, and characteristics relevant to the present class of DSTs operating in S- and X-band (Rosetta, Mars Express, and Venus Express missions). A complete overview of the novel DST equipment designed and developed for X- and Ka-band applications (BepiColombo mission) is provided.

On-board processing technologies are essential for the development and realization of advanced, cost-effective space solutions for emerging telecommunication services.
This paper presents the Koreasat 5 secure communication system that has been design and developed by Alcatel Alenia Space-Italy (AAS-I) for Agency for Defense Development-South Korea
Aim of this paper is to provide an overview of Alcatel Alenia Space-Italy (AAS-I) Spread-Spectrum Transponder platform placing emphasis on its advanced features for secure telemetry, tracking & command (TT&C) applications
Aim of this tutorial is to provide an overview on band-pass sampling approach for on-board processing applications. The paper will focus on the I/Q sampling of bandpass signals and their downconversion. The image problem and two methods for its rejection is presented.
The SKYPLEX concept allows to implement digital satellite video broadcasting function: several uplink carriers allocated in a defined bandwidth and carrying QPSK modulated coded MPEG2 packets are processed in order to create a downlink Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) stream compliant to the ETSI DVB standard and occupying the same uplink bandwidth.Alenia Aerospazio developed one SKYPLEX Unit to be used in the Hotbird 4 satellite and is developing an enhanced version for the Hotbird 5 satellite. The paper gives an overview of the system and describes the main building blocks implemented with ASICs. Finally, possible improvements, based on the experience acquired in the design of the flight application and on the use of advanced technology are highlighted.
