Forward iteration of holomorphic self-maps generalizes the iteration of a single function in a natural way. This framework arises in complex dynamics, for instance in the study of wandering domains and in seeking suitable extensions of the Denjoy-Wolff theorem. Here, we consider forward iteration of Blaschke products. We prove that the classes of indestructible and maximal Blaschke products are stable under forward iteration.
Let $X$ be a hyperbolic Riemann surface. We study a convergent Wick-type star product $\star_X$ on $X$ which is induced by the canonical convergent star product $\star_{\mathbb{D}}$ on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ via Uniformization Theory. While by construction, the resulting Fr\'echet algebras $(\mathcal{A}(X),\star_X)$ are strongly isomorphic for conformally equivalent Riemann surfaces, our work exhibits additional severe topological obstructions. In particular, we show that the Fr\'echet algebra $(\mathcal{A}(X),\star_X)$ degenerates if and only if the connectivity of $X$ is at least $3$, and $(\mathcal{A}(X),\star_X)$ is noncommutative if and only if $X$ is simply connected. We also explicitly determine the algebra $\mathcal{A}_X$ and the star product $\star_X$ for the intermediate case of doubly connected Riemann surfaces $X$. As a perhaps surprinsing result, we deduce that two such Fr\'echet algebras are strongly isomorphic if and only if either both Riemann surfaces are conformally equivalent to an (not neccesarily the same) annulus or both are conformally equivalent to a punctured disk.
We prove a Schwarz-Jack lemma for holomorphic functions on the unit disk with the property that their maximum modulus on each circle about the origin is attained at a point on the positive real axis. With the help of this result, we establish monotonicity and convexity properties of conformal maps of circularly symmetric and bi-circularly symmetric domains. As an application, we give a new proof of Crouzeix's theorem that the numerical range of any $2\times 2$ matrix is a $2$-spectral set for the matrix. Unlike other proofs, our approach does not depend on the explicit formula for the conformal mapping of an ellipse onto the unit disk.
We prove a boundary version of the strong form of the Ahlfors-Schwarz lemma with optimal error term. This result provides nonlinear extensions of the boundary Schwarz lemma of Burns and Krantz to the class of negatively curved conformal pseudometrics defined on arbitary hyperbolic domains in the complex plane. Based on a new boundary Harnack inequality for solutions of the Gauss curvature equation, we also establish a sharp rigidity result for conformal metrics with isolated singularities. In the particular case of constant negative curvature this strengthens classical results of Nitsche and Heins about Liouville's equation $\Delta u=e^u$.
We characterize two classical types of conformality of a holomorphic self-map of the unit disk at a boundary point - the existence of a finite angular derivative in the sense of Carath & eacute;o dory and the weaker property of angle preservation - in terms of the non-tangential asymptotic behavior of the hyperbolic distortion of the map. We also provide an operator-theoretic characterization of the existence of a finite angular derivative based on Hilbert space methods. As an application we study the backward dynamics of discrete dynamical systems induced by holomorphic self-maps, and characterize the regularity of the associated pre-models in terms of a Blaschke-type condition involving the hyperbolic distortion along regular backward orbits. We introduce and study invariant differential operators acting on the space $\mathcal{H}(\Omega)$ of holomorphic functions on the complement ${\Omega=\{(z,w) \in \hat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \, : \, z\cdot w \not=1\}}$ of the "complexified unit circle" $\{(z,w) \in \hat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \, : \, z\cdot w =1\}$. We obtain recursion identities, describe the behaviour under change of coordinates and find the generators of the corresponding operator algebra. We illustrate how this provides a unified framework for investigating conformally invariant differential operators on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ and the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$, which have been studied by Peschl, Aharonov, Minda and many others, within their conjecturally natural habitat. We apply the machinery to a problem in deformation quantization by deriving explicit formulas for the canonical Wick-type star products on $\Omega$, the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ and the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$ in terms of such invariant differential operators. These formulas are given in form of factorial series which depend holomorphically on a complex deformation parameter $\hbar$ and lead to asymptotic expansions of the star products in powers of $\hbar$.
Motivated by recent work on strict deformation quantization of the unit disk and the Riemann sphere, we study the Fréchet space structure of the set of holomorphic functions on the complement \(\Omega:=\{(z,w)\in \hat{\mathbb{C}}^2\colon z\cdot w\not=1\}\) of the complexified unit circle \(\{(z,w) \in \hat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z\cdot w=1\}\). We also characterize the subgroup of all biholomorphic automorphisms of \(\Omega\) which leave the canonical Laplacian on \(\Omega\) invariant.
We study the angular derivative problem for petals of one-parameter semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk. For hyperbolic petals we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the conformality of the petal in terms of the intrinsic hyperbolic geometry of the petal and the backward dynamics of the semigroup. For parabolic petals we characterize conformality of the petal in terms of the asymptotic behaviour of the Koenigs function at the Denjoy-Wolff point.
The central theme of this paper is the holomorphic spectral theory of the canonical Laplace operator of the complement of the "complexified unit circle" $\{(z,w) \in \widehat {{\mathbb C}}<^>2 \colon z \cdot w = 1\}$ . We start by singling out a distinguished set of holomorphic eigenfunctions on the bidisk in terms of hypergeometric ${}_2F_1$ functions and prove that they provide a spectral decomposition of every holomorphic eigenfunction on the bidisk. As a second step, we identify the maximal domains of definition of these eigenfunctions and show that these maximal domains naturally determine the fine structure of the eigenspaces. Our main result gives an intrinsic classification of all closed Mobius invariant subspaces of eigenspaces of the canonical Laplacian of $\Omega $ . Generalizing foundational prior work of Helgason and Rudin, this provides a unifying complex analytic framework for the real-analytic eigenvalue theories of both the hyperbolic and spherical Laplace operators on the open unit disk resp. the Riemann sphere and, in particular, shows how they are interrelated with one another.
We prove several sharp distortion and monotonicity theorems for spherically convex functions defined on the unit disk involving geometric quantities such as spherical length, spherical area, and total spherical curvature. These results can be viewed as geometric variants of the classical Schwarz lemma for spherically convex functions.
In this paper we establish several invariant boundary versions of the (infinitesimal) Schwarz-Pick lemma for conformal pseudometrics on the unit disk and for holomorphic selfmaps of strongly convex domains in CN in the spirit of the boundary Schwarz lemma of Burns–Krantz. Firstly, we focus on the case of the unit disk and prove a general boundary rigidity theorem for conformal pseudometrics with variable curvature. In its simplest cases this result already includes new types of boundary versions of the lemmas of Schwarz–Pick, Ahlfors–Schwarz and Nehari–Schwarz. The proof is based on a new Harnack–type inequality as well as a boundary Hopf lemma for conformal pseudometrics which extend earlier interior rigidity results of Golusin, Heins, Beardon, Minda and others. Secondly, we prove similar rigidity theorems for sequences of conformal pseudometrics, which even in the interior case appear to be new. For instance, a first sequential version of the strong form of Ahlfors' lemma is obtained. As an auxiliary tool we establish a Hurwitz–type result about preservation of zeros of sequences of conformal pseudometrics. Thirdly, we apply the one–dimensional sequential boundary rigidity results together with a variety of techniques from several complex variables to prove a boundary version of the Schwarz–Pick lemma for holomorphic maps of strongly convex domains in CN for N>1.
Let $f$ be a univalent self-map of the unit disc. We introduce a technique, that we call {\sl semigroup-fication}, which allows to construct a continuous semigroup $(\phi_t)$ of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc whose time one map $\phi_1$ is, in a sense, very close to $f$. The semigrup-fication of $f$ is of the same type as $f$ (elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic of positive step or parabolic of zero step) and there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of boundary regular fixed points of $f$ with a given multiplier and the corresponding set for $\phi_1$. Moreover, in case $f$ (and hence $\phi_1$) has no interior fixed points, the slope of the orbits converging to the Denjoy-Wolff point is the same. The construction is based on holomorphic models, localization techniques and Gromov hyperbolicity. As an application of this construction, we prove that in the non-elliptic case, the orbits of $f$ converge non-tangentially to the Denjoy-Wolff point if and only if the Koenigs domain of $f$ is "almost symmetric" with respect to vertical lines.
We survey a number of recent generalizations and sharpenings of Nehari's extension of Schwarz' lemma for holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk. In particular, we discuss the case of infinitely many critical points and its relation to the zero sets and invariant subspaces for Bergman spaces, as well as the case of equality at the boundary.
For a connected real Lie group G we consider the canonical standard-ordered star product arising from the canonical global symbol calculus based on the half-commutator connection of G . This star product trivially converges on polynomial functions on T^*G thanks to its homogeneity. We define a nuclear Fréchet algebra of certain analytic functions on T^*G , for which the standard-ordered star product is shown to be a well-defined continuous multiplication, depending holomorphically on the deformation parameter ħ . This nuclear Fréchet algebra is realized as the completed (projective) tensor product of a nuclear Fréchet algebra of entire functions on G with an appropriate nuclear Fréchet algebra of functions on 𝔤^* . The passage to the Weyl-ordered star product, i.e. the Gutt star product on T^*G , is shown to preserve this function space, yielding the continuity of the Gutt star product with holomorphic dependence on ħ .
We prove a sharp Bernstein-type inequality for complex polynomials which are positive and satisfy a polynomial growth condition on the positive real axis. This leads to an improved upper estimate in the recent work of Culiuc and Treil (Int. Math. Res. Not. 2019: 3301–3312, 2019) on the weighted martingale Carleson embedding theorem with matrix weights. In the scalar case this new upper bound is optimal.
In a recent paper, Ng, Tang and Tsai (Math. Ann. 2020) have found an explicit formula for the squeezing function of an annulus via the Loewner differential equation. Their result has led them to conjecture a corresponding formula for planar domains of any finite connectivity stating that the extremum in the squeezing function problem is achieved for a suitably chosen conformal mapping onto a circularly slit disk. In this paper we disprove this conjecture. We also give a conceptually simple potential-theoretic proof of the explicit formula for the squeezing function of an annulus which has the added advantage of identifying all extremal functions.
We prove a sharp Schwarz-type lemma for meromorphic functions with spherical derivative uniformly bounded away from zero. As a consequence we deduce an improved quantitative version of a recent normality criterion due to Grahl & Nevo and Steinmetz, which is asymptotically best possibe. Based on a well--known symmetry result of Gidas, Ni & Nirenberg for nonlinear elliptic PDEs, we relate our Schwarz-type lemma to an associated nonlinear dual boundary extremal problem. As an application we obtain a generalization of Beurling's extension of the Riemann mapping theorem for the case of the spherical metric.
We prove that the family $$\mathcal {F}_C(D)$$ of all meromorphic functions f on a domain $$D\subseteq \mathbb {C}$$ with the property that the spherical area of the image domain f(D) is uniformly bounded by $$C \pi $$ is quasi-normal of order $$\le C$$ . We also discuss the close relations between this result and the well-known work of Brézis and Merle on blow-up solutions of Liouville’s equation. These results are completely in the spirit of Gromov’s compactness theorem, as pointed out at the end of the paper.
We state and prove a multi-point version of Jack's Lemma for functions which are analytic on the open unit disc, but are not necessarily analytic at boundary points. Our proof, in particular, does not rely on Julia's lemma.
On the Poincaré disc and its higher-dimensional analogs one has a canonical formal star product of Wick type. We define a locally convex topology on a certain class of real-analytic functions on the disc for which the star product is continuous and converges as a series. The resulting Fréchet algebra is characterized explicitly in terms of the set of all holomorphic functions on an extended and doubled disc of twice the dimension endowed with the natural topology of locally uniform convergence. We discuss the holomorphic dependence on the deformation parameter and the positive functionals and their GNS representations of the resulting Fréchet algebra.
