The paper deals with an examination of possible application of biodegradation in the decontamination of soil samples from international airport in Ostrava. The laboratory biodegradation tests were carried out with a pure bacterial culture of Pseudomonas putida, a pure laboratory culture of Rhodococcus sp, their mixture and a mixture prepared combining their media free of bacteria. The results of the paper imply that for biodegradation of airport pollutants is most suitable to apply a mixed bacterial culture of Pseudomonas putida and Rhodococcus sp. The results show that the biodegradation method is applicable for the pollution.
Black-coal fly ash from Kosice Power Plant in Slovakia contains between 22 and 25% of unburnt coal, which is, strictly speaking, a useful component. Studying optimal separation methods of unburnt coal from the examined sample of fly ash, three methods of dry mechanical screening on sieves, counterflow air classification, dry and wet gravity separation and flotation have been verified. The combination of dry mechanical screening and flotation appears to be the most efficient, through the application of which we retrieved coal concentrate with ash content below 10%, which is applicable in the process of power generation in power plants.
Do skorygowania składu stosowano glin w postaci gibbsytu. Przebadano wpływ różnych stosunków popiołu lotnego i gibbsytu jak i wpływ temperatury przemiany na skład mineralny (fazowy) przygotowanych kompozytów typu mulitu.
In 2008, 84 million tons (Mt) of hard coal was extracted in Poland and although there has been a subsequent decline, it remains a major source of high quality coal for domestic power generators and steel producers and its neighbours in Europe and beyond. In the extraction of the valuable coal products, the production of 1 tonne of hard coal generates 0.4 tonne of extractive ‘waste material’, comprising waste rock including lost coal, and washery rejects and tailings, both containing economically recoverable coal. This chapter focuses on the situation in Poland and neighbouring countries, describing efforts to recover this lost coal, but also serves to provide a good insight into similar situations in other major coal producing countries. A case study for a successful project recently completed by the RecyCoal company in the UK is included as the conclusion to this chapter.
This contribution is focused on the leaching of metals from electronic waste using bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans under static conditions. Leaching of copper and tin from circuit board using bacteria was verified and compared to chemical leaching. The overall amounts of leached metals were quite low in all variants. Addition of bacteria improved the leaching of copper; however comparable results were obtained by addition of the sole nutrient medium without bacteria. Leaching of the tin followed different pattern and was not improved by presence of bacteria.
The paper deals with a possible application of high-sulphur brown coal, where through pyrolysis a liquid product is obtained from the brown coal, which is further used in flotation as an alternative flotation agent. The brown coal samples were drawn from the Sokolov Region. Bacterial desulphurization using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was consequently applied in order to discover whether the sulphur content has any impact on the final liquid product of pyrolysis. Finally, the pyrolytic oil was used in the flotation of black-coal slurries, both separately as well as combined with the conventional flotation agent of Montanol 800. Net heat of combustion of the pyrolytic gas was determined as a secondary assignment.
The paper deals with an application of bacterial leaching on two selected samples from old ecological loads situated in the Karlovy Vary Region. To be specific, they are heaps in Prebuz and Kraslice. Bacterial leaching was applied making use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria and lasted 28 days. The results imply that the given method is suitable for the retrieval of valuable metals from waste and may help to deal with the issue of old heaps and dumps.
Pyrolysis is a much applied technology at present. The major advantage of pyrolysis is a formation of pyrolytic products which may be further used. The aim of the research is to compare the calorific value of pyrolytic oil and several kinds of waste. The pyrolytic oil is obtained pyrolyzing tyres in a HOKS INDUSTRY TS500 unit and its calorific value is determined using a LECO AC350 apparatus. Its calorific value is compared with the calorific value of various materials, such as sorted municipal waste, waste wood, car fuel, solid fuel and natural gas.
Conventional fossil fuels as well as alternative ones are carriers of energy which is transformed and used during combustion processes in power-generation plants. The knowledge of precise fuel quality is thus indispensable information as it is related to a number of further calculations and processes. Both accurate analytical processes as well as precise representative sample drawing are crucial for an exact determination of qualitative fuel characteristics. In large power-generating plants, those activities are carried out using automatic sampling lines, which may however cause a constant shift in the qualitative values of the drawn samples and they may thus distort further calculations for which the values are used. The paper also deals with the question what may cause the shift, it describes the course of its evaluation and finally it states possible consequences for certain balance calculations in power-engineering.

The power plants produces hundreds tones of fly ashes yearly. From this amount is really used in the reason only 10 % without the any treatment in the industrial production. The rest of this ashes are deposited on dumps and settling pits, that have many negative influence on the environment. Following the previous results from the extensive treatment research was proposed the waste less technology of the complex treatment and utilization of black coal fly ash. The final products of this technology are the products as follows: the black coal flotation concentrate suitable for the combustion in the power plants; sorbent of the zeolite type available for the some types of waste waters; new type of heatproof material of mullite-corundum type exploitable in the production of heat proof materials. There was confirmed also the ability to use the black coal fly ash as the additive to the composite bricks production.
Further to the global trend of using wastes as secondary resources, also in the Czech and Slovak Republic there is an emphasis on the new benefication of wastes in terms of their further utilization and recycling in technological processes. The utilization of wastes does not only broaden the raw material base, but it also helps to save the primary sources of minerals as well as there are lower costs of waste transport, dumping and disposal thanks to their complex utilization. The paper deals with the application of segregation roasting combined with flotation in the processing of heap materials from ZB Slovinky in order to obtain copper or iron concentrates.
