Bei der Wechselwirkung des Kohlenmonoxids mit Magnesiumoxid ist selbst bei niedrigen Temperaturen der Ablauf der Boudouard-Reaktion unter Bildung von Kohlendioxid und elementarem Kohlenstoff zu beobachten. Kohlenmonoxid und Kohlendioxid werden an der Oberfläche des Magnesiumoxids adsorbiert, wobei sich verschiedene Karbonatkomplexe ausbilden, die sich in ihrer Stabilität unterscheiden. Bikarbonatkomplexe entstehen durch eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Kohlendioxid und OHGruppen auf dem Magnesiumoxid. Als stabilster Komplex erwies sich der Monodentatkarbonat-Komplex. Bei Anwesenheit von Wasserstoff im System erfolgt eine Hydrierung des Kohlenmonoxids zu an der Oberfläche des MgO gebundenen Kohlenwasserstoffkomplexen.
