The objective of this study was to evaluate the amount of sperm per breed in relation to age, season and difference of first and second ejaculates. A total of 43 bucks were analysed over a 10-year period. There was a highly significant difference in the amount of sperm production between younger and older bucks (0.71 mi vs 0.96 mi), as well as between the Saanen on the one hand and the Alpine and Toggenburg on the other. It was possible to produce 55% more ejaculates from September to February than from March to August. In all breeds tested, the sperm concentration seemed to be higher out of season than during the actual breeding season. The estimated average-motility of the native sperm was, surprisingly, correlated to the amount of the first and second ejaculates over a period of months. After repeated semen collection, performed at 10-15 min intervals, the volume of the second ejaculates was 15% lower than of the first ones. Although seasonality is also strongly expressed in the male it may be worth collecting semen all year round.
The Swiss Federation of Al maintains a buck center in spite of the poor insemination rate in goats of 1.8 %. During the whole year semen of the bucks will be collected twice a week. The frequency of collection of double ejaculates depends on the season and attains the highest rates (83.5-93.9 %) from November to April. The avarage of the volume of the ejaculates is 0.79 ml (s = 0.49) for the first mount and 0.59 ml (s = 0.52) for the second, independent of breed and age of the bucks. The change from the mini-straws to the medium straws was due to improved semen motility after trials with the Thermoresistance Test (5h at 38-degrees-C). In order to mark the influence of this change on the pregnancy rate, an interval of a 10 year-insemination practice was selected for statistic evaulations, divided in Periode I before and Periode II after the change. After first inseminations (F.I.) as well as after second and more inseminations (S.I.) the pregnancy rates showed from Periode I to Periode II a significant improvement from 49.5 to 56.0 % (p < 0.025) 66.9 to 72.5 % (p < 0.05), respectively. The group A of the good inseminators improved its pregnancy rate after F.I. from 53.4 to 67.7 % (p < 0.01) much more than the group B of the less experienced inseminators, who showed no significant difference from 36.8 to 45.8 %. The change of the straw size had an additional effect, as with the use of the instruments for medium straws the semen deposition can be carried out more carefully. This had a particular positive effect in the Toggenburg breed and so the pregnancy rates increased after F.I. from 45.7 to 59.5 % (p < 0.01) and after S.I. from 64.0 to 72.7 % (p < 0.05). Comparing the pregnancy rates between the breeds Saanen, Alpine and Toggenburg there is no fundamental difference. The nulliparous goats show an unsatisfactory pregnancy rate after artificial insemination and a significant lower number of kids than in pluriparous goats (1.34 vs. 1.65 kids). Changing to medium straws the short time synchronisation was introduced at the same time, using the Prostaglandin Cloprostenol in addition to the method of the Fluorogestonacetate vaginal sponges and the application of PMSG. The improvement of the pregnancy rates after synchronisation from Periode I to Periode II was particularly higher from 36.4 to 68.1 % (p < 0.01) than in inseminations on natural heat from 49.5 to 56.4 % comparing Periode I and Periode II. The increase of the number of kids by 0.29 by synchronisation was statistically significant compared to natural heat (p < 0.05).
75,7% keinen signifikanten Unterschied.Contents: Artificial insemination of swine. A five years use of the Bütschwil diluent from 1983–1987A statement to the article of L.E. Johnson et al.: Artificial insemination of swine. In: Zuchthygiene 23, 49–55 (1988) The use of a modified diluent for AI of swine, based on parts of the medias of Zorlesco and Modena (original Bütschwil diluent), resulted in normal fecundity in the area of the Bütschwil AZ Center. These results are in contrast to a field trial of L.A. Johnson et al. (1988), but obtained by a diluent which differed from the extender used in Bütschwil in the amount of 2 components. With the aid of the information forms of hereditary defects, the farrowing rates during a five‐year‐period (1983–1987) showed the following figures: Landrace (VLS) 72,8% with 10,4 live and 1,8 dead born piglets per litter; Yorkshire (ES) 73,2 with 10, Z live and 1,8 dead born piglets per litter. Comparing the farrowing rate with another Swiss boar center, which was using the BTS extender, showed in u same period of three years (1985–1987) with 73,07% respectively 75,70% no significant difference.
