Whenever we have questions or want to gain a clear understanding of a subject, we open a reference or textbook. It is, in these situations, that the reference or textbook functions as an expert and a great mentor. The third edition of ‘‘Gastrointestinal Pathology: an Atlas and Text’’ by Cecilia M. Fenoglio-Preiser, et al definitely serves well as ‘‘an expert’’ and ‘‘a great mentor’’ because of a number of unique features it possesses. First, as its name implies, there are thousands of illustrations of great varieties including diagrammatic representations, macroscopic pictures, radiographic and endoscopic images, and histologic images. This enormous variety of images exposes readers to a visual world where ‘‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’’ To make the visual and learning experience more rewarding, the authors place arrow(s) in many of these images, highlighting the critical pathologic features they intend to present. This unique feature is very useful for readers at the beginning of their training or only with limited experience in gastrointestinal diseases. Second, and similarly impressive, is the text that is rich and well written. The text includes a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases ranging from common to rare, from benign to neoplastic. Every category of gastrointestinal diseases is discussed and well presented in appropriate detail tailored to each disease. Third, the references in the current version of this book have been updated enormously when compared with the previous edition published in 1997. Finally, but not least, this book provides updated clinical management of many gastrointestinal diseases and pays particular attention to the clinical implications of important and difficult diagnoses, including dysplasia in Barrett esophagus and idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. This last feature is testimony to the authors’ enormous personal experience accumulated in their daily gastrointestinal pathology practice, and it is this feature that I value the most in this book. In my humble opinion, additional criteria for judging if a book is valuable are to determine how often a reader uses the book and how often the reader has his/her questions answered by referring to the book. From my brief personal experience with this book, I use this reference quite often, almost every day, when I am on a busy gastrointestinal pathology signout service, to describe unusual features of a common disease or a rare disorder I have never encountered before. Further, this book not only comes as a traditionally printed version, it also has an online interactive website which allows instant access to a fully searchable online text and a fully searchable or downloadable image bank. This feature truly expands the utility of this book as a very useful resource for teaching. The rich text and large reservoir of images always allow a portion of information to be extracted, tailored, and used for different audiences from medical students, pathology residents, and clinicians in a variety of teaching settings including formal classes, microscopic sessions, or clinicopathologic conferences. A book of this expanse always has something that is not perfect. After a very careful review, I noticed that there are a few pictures that should have been removed or replaced because they are slightly out of focus or off color balance. A few of these slightly ‘‘aged’’ pictures remind the readers of how long this book has existed (since 1989) and has served so many readers in its previous editions. In summary, this is a superb textbook of gastrointestinal pathology, a discipline that has advanced enormously in the past 2 decades. This book summarizes relevant progress made in basic research in recent years and applies the newly obtained knowledge to enhance our understanding of gastrointestinal diseases. It documents in detail the pathologic features of the huge breadth of gastrointestinal diseases, and most importantly, incorporates the authors’ personal experience in evaluating these specimens. I strongly recommend this book to pathologists-in-training, gastrointestinal pathology fellows, practicing pathologists, and other clinicians (including gastroenterologists, radiologists, internists, and surgeons) who are interested in gastrointestinal diseases and want to have a further understanding of gastrointestinal pathology.
