Mood profiling is a longstanding strategy for assessing mental health risk and several distinct mood profile clusters have been identified in different cultural contexts. In this study, six previously identified mood profile clusters, namely, the iceberg, inverse iceberg, inverse Everest, shark fin, submerged and surface profiles, were investigated in Finnish individuals. The 24-item, 6-factor Finnish-language version of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS), referred to as the Finnish Mood Scale (FIMS) was completed by 652 Finnish-speaking participants (409 females and 231 males), of which 156 self-identified as athletes, 368 self-identified as regular exercisers and 128 self-identified as inactive. Participants were grouped into four age categories [15-25 (n = 238), 26-35 (n = 176), 36-45 (n = 108) and 46+ yr. (n = 129)]. Seeded k-means cluster analysis identified the six hypothesised mood profiles. A discriminant function analysis supported cluster strength. Chi-squared analyses showed differences between groups in cluster prevalence. Males were overpresented in the iceberg profile, associated with positive mental health, whereas females were overpresented in the inverse Everest and shark fin profiles, both of which are associated with risks to mental health. In physical activity categories, the inactive group was underrepresented and exercisers overrepresented in the iceberg profile. Exercisers were underrepresented, and athletes overrepresented in the inverse iceberg profile. Age comparisons showed the 46+ years group were overpresented in the iceberg profile. Findings indicate that the FIMS may have utility in identifying individuals with mood profiles associated with elevated risk to mental health in Finnish populations aged 15 years and older.
This study investigated relationships between mood profiles, sports injuries, and countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJ) performance in a cohort study of 417 Brazilian athletes using a multi-methods approach during the period from January to November 2023. Six distinct mood profiles were identified, termed the shark fin (28.3%), iceberg (20.4%), submerged (18.7%), inverse iceberg (18.0%), surface (9.8%), and inverse Everest (4.8%). Athletes with the inverse Everest profile had a significantly higher risk of injury (OR = 2.90; 90% CI [1.09–7.55]) compared to those with the iceberg profile. Random forest models showed moderate predictive capability (AUC = 0.651), with vigour (12.7%) and anger (11.5%) as primary predictors. Bayesian analysis confirmed a higher injury probability in athletes with the inverse Everest profile (31.8%). Despite statistical power limitations, the results indicate that negative mood profiles, particularly those with elevated anger and fatigue, are associated with increased injury risk. Mood scores were not associated with CMJ performance variation. These findings highlight the importance of considering mood profiles in athlete monitoring systems, acknowledging the complex interplay between psychological and physical factors in injury risk.
Objectives Using audiovisual stimuli during exercise is an effective strategy to enhance pleasure, which is crucial for sustaining exercise. According to self-determination theory, self-selected audiovisual stimuli may boost autonomy and intrinsic motivation. However, the effects of self-selected audiovisual stimuli remain inconclusive. Thus, this study examines the impact of self-selected audiovisual stimuli on affective responses and prefrontal oxygenation during acute endurance exercise. Methods Twenty-nine physically inactive individuals (M-age = 19.6, SD = 1.4 years, 3 males) participated in the intervention with three conditions: self-selected (SS), researcher-selected (RS), and no audiovisual stimuli (control, C). Conditions were randomized and counterbalanced. Participants exercised for 23 min (3 min warm-up + 20 min moderate-intensity treadmill running). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy assessed cortical oxygenation changes in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Psychological responses (affective valence, arousal, perceived exertion, and attentional focus) were measured before and during exercise. Linear mixed models were used to compare condition differences. Results Participants reported more positive affective valence (p = .02, eta(2)(p) = 0.02) and more external attentional focus (p < .01, eta(2)(p) = 0.16) in the SS compared to the RS condition. Oxygenated hemoglobin (O(2)Hb) in the right dlPFC was also higher in the SS (p < .01, eta(2)(p) = 0.05) compared to the RS condition. However, correlations between affective valence and O(2)Hb were not significant (right dlPFC: r = 0.21, p = .12; left dlPFC: r = -0.17, p = .19). Conclusions Self-selected audiovisual stimuli appear to induce positive affective valence and increase O(2)Hb in the right dlPFC. These stimuli may activate the right prefrontal cortex to regulate negative affective valence. Future research should explore factors that moderate or mediate these effects, providing further insight into the neurophysiological processes that enhance exercise-related positive affective valence.
The psychology of sports officials is often overlooked in psychology research. The present study addressed this disparity by exploring relationships among the mood, stress, and performance of Australian softball umpires. Six male and two female participants aged 25–68 years (M = 48.95 ± 17.39 years) each completed the Brunel Mood Scale before games and provided saliva samples on multiple occasions prior to and after officiating games at two Australian National Softball Championships. Data from 65 games were analysed with performance assessed using Softball Australia’s umpire assessment tool. A significant positive relationship (p < 0.01) was found between tension scores and umpire performance. Using a stepwise regression analysis, tension scores and baseline cortisol level collectively explained 22.6% of the variance in umpire performance scores. These findings suggest that umpires require an optimal level of tension in the period leading up to competition to perform successfully, supporting the relationship between tension and performance first proposed by the inverted-U hypothesis.
The purposes of this study were to examine relationships between athlete self-report measures of wellness, mood, sleep, and performance indicators of a women's national basketball team during international competition (2023 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup). Physical and psychological wellness were recorded using a cloud-based athlete management system, mood was assessed using the 24-item Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS), and performance was evaluated by player self-assessment and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) player efficiency score. Wellness indicators were rated at or either side of a normal rating (i.e., 3 on a 1–5 scale), as was self-rated performance. Mean sleep duration was 8:13 hours (± 1:13), with large individual differences in retiring time and sleep duration. Mood scores showed a general pattern of declining tension and vigour over the 14-day assessment period. Mood subscales predicted 49.0% of variance in wellbeing scores, 46.8% of variance in preparedness scores, and 26.0% of variance in player efficiency scores. Wellbeing indicators predicted 34.9% of self-rated performance variance and mood subscale scores predicted 27.7% of variance. These findings suggest that female athletes may be particularly susceptible to mood disturbances impacting performance and highlight the potential for targeted interventions, including stress management and sleep optimization, to mitigate these stressors and support mental wellbeing. These strategies may enhance both psychological health and athletic performance during the high stress demands associated with international competition.
Mood profile clusters have previously been identified in several cultural contexts. In the present study, six mood profile clusters referred to as the iceberg, inverse Everest, inverse iceberg, shark fin, submerged, and surface profiles, were investigated in a Greek population. The names of the mood profiles reflect how they appear after raw scores for Tension, Depression, Anger, Vigor, Fatigue, and Confusion (in that order), are converted to T-scores and depicted graphically. A Greek translation of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS-Greek) was completed by 1786 adults, comprising 1417 exercise participants and 369 physically inactive adults (male = 578, female = 1208) aged 18–64 years (M = 34.73 ± 11.81 years). Although the male–female ratio emphasized females, sample sizes of over 500 suggest some degree of representativeness. Seeded k-means cluster analysis clearly identified the six hypothesized mood profiles. Men were over-represented for the iceberg profile. For age, the 18–25 years group were under-represented for the iceberg profile, whereas the 46–55 and 56+ years groups were over-represented. The 56+ years group were under-represented for the inverse Everest, and the 18–25 years group were over-represented for the shark fin profile. For body mass index (BMI), participants in the obese weight category were over-represented for the inverse iceberg and shark fin profiles and under-represented for the submerged profile. Active participants were over-represented for the iceberg and submerged profiles, and under-represented for the inverse Everest, inverse iceberg, and surface profiles. Findings supported the cross-cultural equivalence of the mood profile clusters and confirmed the link between physical inactivity, obesity, and negative mood profiles.
COVID-19 affected health and wellbeing globally. Graduating nursing students face a variety of stressors and entering the nursing profession during the pandemic added additional stress. Mood, perceived stress, resilience, and coping were assessed in an Australian sample of 112 graduating nursing students, who completed the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4), and Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS). Mean BRUMS scores for tension, fatigue, and confusion were significantly above population norms, and vigour scores significantly below. Mean PSS-4 scores were reflective of population norms, but showed higher levels of stress for younger and on-campus students compared to those who were older or who studied externally. BRCS data showed that 82.1% of the graduating nursing students were medium or high resilient copers. Mood profiles suggested that 19.6% of participants had elevated mental health risk, 23.2% showed potential risk of burnout, and only 17.9% reported mood profiles associated with positive mental health. High mean tension scores reported by the graduating nursing students indicated apprehension about joining the profession, although stress, resilience and coping scores suggested they were adequately managing the additional stressors generated by a global pandemic.
The interest in mental health in a sports context has increased in recent years. However, there is no scientifically sound measurement tool for assessing sport-related mental health symptoms in the Finnish language. One of the most frequently used measurement tools for such symptoms in English is the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS). The purpose of the present study was to adapt and validate a Finnish version of the BRUMS, referred to as the Finnish Mood Scale (FIMS). The 24-item, 6-factor FIMS was administered to 445 Finnish participants concurrently with Finnish versions of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Psychobiosocial States Scale (PBS-S). The sample consisted of 259 females (58.2%), 177 males (39.8%), and 9 who did not disclose their gender (2%), aged 16 to 75 years (M = 35.65, SD = 13.70). Sixty-two participants (13.9%) reported being a competitive athlete, 273 (61.3%) were regular exercisers, and 109 (24.5%) did not exercise regularly. A six-factor modified CFA model indicated an adequate fit to the data (CFI = 0.944, TLI = 0.934, RMSEA = 0.060). Concurrent measures correlated with FIMS in line with theoretical predictions, supporting convergent and divergent validity. Males reported significantly more positive mood scores than females. Physically active participants reported significantly more positive mood scores than inactive individuals, endorsing the mental health benefits of physical exercise. Findings indicate that the FIMS is a suitable measurement tool to screen mood modalities in Finnish populations aged 16 years and older. FIMS may be useful for the early detection of mental ill-health, thus, promoting sustainable mental health.
Those responsible for elite and youth athletes are increasingly aware of the need to balance the quest for superior performance with the need to protect the physical and psychological wellbeing of athletes. As a result, regular assessment of risks to mental health is a common feature in sports organisations. In the present study, the Brazil Mood Scale (BRAMS) was administered to 898 athletes (387 female, 511 male, age range: 12–44 years) at a leading sports club in Rio de Janeiro using either “past week” or “right now” response timeframes. Using seeded k-means cluster analysis, six distinct mood profile clusters were identified, referred to as the iceberg, surface, submerged, shark fin, inverse iceberg, and inverse Everest profiles. The latter three profiles, which are associated with varying degrees of increased risk to mental health, were reported by 238 athletes (26.5%). The prevalence of these three mood clusters varied according to the response timeframe (past week > right now) and the sex of the athletes (female > male). The prevalence of the iceberg profile varied by athlete sex (male > female), and age (12–17 years > 18+ years). Findings supported use of the BRAMS as a screening tool for the risk of psychological issues among athletes in Brazilian sports organisations.
Mood research in sports typically focuses on athletes, with sports officials being largely overlooked. In the current study, mood profiling was used to determine if softball umpires reported an identifiable and consistent mood profile and if mood was predictive of umpiring performance and/or reflective of positive mental health. Eleven male and five female participants aged 25–68 years (M = 48.5 ± 15.5 years) each completed the Brunel Mood Scale on multiple occasions prior to officiating games at the 2020 U18 National Softball Championships. A total of 185 mood profiles were analysed. Performance was assessed using Softball Australia’s official umpire assessment tool. Overall, participants reported an iceberg mood profile, which tends to be associated with positive mental health and good performance. Umpiring performances (pass/fail) were correctly classified in 75.0% of cases from tension, depression, and confusion scores (p = 0.003). Participant sex explained 25.7% of the variance in mood scores (p < 0.001); age, 25.8% of the variance (p < 0.001); position on the diamond, 10.5% of the variance (p = 0.003); and accreditation level, 14.3% of the variance (p < 0.001). Australian softball umpires typically reported mood profiles associated with positive mental health, and none reported profiles associated with risk of mental ill-health.

Stress research in sports tends to focus on athletes, with sports officials typically being overlooked. In the current study, baseline, pre-game, and post-game cortisol levels among a sample of softball umpires were measured to assess the pattern of stress responses and determine if umpire performance (pass/fail) and position on the diamond (plate/field) could be predicted from cortisol levels. Nine male and four female participants aged 25–68 years (N = 13, M = 47.06 ± 15.65 years) each provided saliva samples on multiple occasions prior to and after officiating games at two Australian National Softball Championships. Data from 65 games were analysed. Performance was assessed using Softball Australia’s official umpire assessment tool. Cortisol levels increased significantly from baseline to pre-game (p < 0.001, d = −0.69) and declined significantly from pre-game to post-game (p < 0.001, d = 0.47). Umpiring performances were correctly classified as pass or fail from baseline and pre-game cortisol levels in 61.5% of cases and umpire position on the diamond from pre-game cortisol in 63.1% of cases. Findings suggest that stress management strategies should be recommended to softball umpires for performance enhancement and to safeguard their mental health.
This paper reports on research undertaken for the Building Resilience for Bushfire-Affected Communities in Noosa Shire project, funded by the Australian Government. Being evacuated from a home in the path of a bushfire can be traumatic. Therefore, it is important for evacuees to have safe places to stay, both physically and psychologically. Using a qualitative approach, we aimed to (a) understand the experiences of people who were displaced from their homes and sheltered at evacuation centres during the Noosa Shire bushfires and (b) understand what support is needed during disasters, such as bushfires, to help create positive experiences for future evacuees. Twelve participants displaced by bushfires in Noosa, Australia, in 2019 recalled their experiences in semi-structured interviews (conducted in 2022–2023). Inductive thematic analysis using NVivo 13 identified three themes that can inform government and public disaster preparation and response: planning, support, and communication. Findings from this study centred around building community resilience and offer valuable insights for organising disaster evacuation processes and evacuation centres on a broader scale. For individuals, it involves planning optimal evacuation routes, gathering necessary personal items, feeling safe and calm in evacuation centres, and receiving regular and accurate communication from authorities during disaster events.
Natural disasters such as bushfires are a test of individual and group resilience, and in extreme cases, threaten the sustainability of communities. Bushfires have long been common in Australia, although anthropogenic climate change has exacerbated their prevalence and severity. The aim of the present study was to assess the individual resilience and disaster-specific adaptation and resilience of community members in the wake of a bushfire event. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional design, an adult community sample of 165 residents of Noosa Shire in regional Queensland, Australia completed the 25-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC©) and the 43-item Disaster Adaptation and Resilience Scale (DARS). Mean scores for the CD-RISC© indicated significantly greater resilience (p < 0.001) than reported previously for a large Australian community cohort. Similarly, the DARS scores indicated significantly greater adaptation and resilience (p < 0.001) than that of a comparable cohort in the USA. The two oldest groups of residents (66+ years and 51–65 years) reported significantly greater adaptation and resilience than the group of younger residents (≤50 years; p < 0.001). The study findings provide the Noosa Shire community with an objective baseline from which they can assess the efficacy of future resilience-building initiatives and, more broadly, offer a valuable point of reference for future disaster-related research.
The aim of the present study was to provide initial validity evidence of a Greek translation of the 24-item Brunel Mood Scale, referred to as the BRUMS-Greek, a measure of anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension, and vigour. Data were collected from 1417 Greek adult exercise participants and 369 physically inactive adults, totaling 1786 adults (male = 578, female = 1208) aged 18–64 years (M = 34.73 ± 11.81 years). Given the large univariate and multivariate non-normality, a confirmatory factor analyses treating responses as ordered categorical variables was conducted which supported the hypothesised six-correlated factor measurement model. The internal consistency reliability of the BRUMS-Greek subscales was supported via Cronbach alpha coefficients. The construct validity of the scales was supported (a) via correlations in the hypothesised direction with trait positive and negative affect, (b) with more positive and less negative moods reported immediately after participation in a single exercise class compared to pre-exercise mood, and (c) with exercise participants reporting more positive and less negative mood states compared to physically inactive adults. Women reported higher tension and lower vigour scores than men. Tension scores were higher and confusion scores lower among younger participants (≤35 years) than older participants (≥36 years). Participants with obesity reported higher negative mood scores than those who were underweight or normal weight. In sum, the BRUMS-Greek demonstrated acceptable psychometric characteristics, and is proposed to be a suitable measure for use with exercise participants, physically inactive adults, and other Greek populations to explore research questions related to mood.
Regular assessment of the mood construct as an indicator of psychological wellbeing is used in Brazil to screen athletes for risk of mental health issues. The present study tested the psychometric characteristics of the Brazil Mood Scale (BRAMS) using both "right now" and "past week" response time frames and investigated between-group differences in mood based on athletes' sex, age, and social vulnerability. Participants were 898 athletes (511 male, 387 female, age range: 12-44 years) from eight sports. The factorial validity of the BRAMS was supported using both response time frames independently and in a multi-sample analysis. Subscale reliability was supported for both time frames. Fatigue, depression, and tension scores were higher using the "past week" time frame than the "right now" time frame. Males reported higher vigor scores than females, and younger participants (<18 years) reported lower scores for anger and depression than older participants (18+ years). No significant differences in mood (p > 0.05) were found between participants identified as socially vulnerable and those who were not socially vulnerable. Findings supported the psychometric integrity of the BRAMS and its use as a screening measure for psychological wellbeing among youth and elite athletes in Brazil.
Mood measures have been shown to have utility for monitoring risks to mental health and to predict performance among athletes. To facilitate use in a Malaysian context, we tested a Malay-language version of the 24-item Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS), referred to as the Malaysian Mood Scale (MASMS). Following a thorough translation–back-translation process, the 24-item MASMS was administered to 4923 Malay-speaking respondents (2706 males, 2217 females; 2559 athletes, 2364 non-athletes), ranging in age from 17 to 75 years (M = 28.2 years, SD = 9.4 years). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the six-factor MASMS measurement model (CFI = 0.950, TLI = 0.940, RMSEA = 0.056 [CI 0.055, 0.058]). Convergent and divergent validity of the MASMS were supported via relationships with depression, anxiety, and stress measures. Significant differences in mood scores were found between athletes and non-athletes, males and females, and younger and older participants. Tables of normative data and profile sheets for specific groups were generated. We propose that the MASMS is a valid measure that can be used to monitor mental health status among athletes and non-athletes and that facilitates future mood-related research in Malaysia.
