This paper focuses on the theoretical simulation of fracture and stable crack growth of specimens with non-local damage. The first law of thermodynamics allows the identification or definition of appropriate crack-driving forces. The results are compared with recent ideas on defining tearing resistance for uncontained yield through the energy dissipation rate. A hypothesis regarding the conversion of mechanical into thermal energies within the non-local damage region is formulated to model the fracture behaviour of energy dissipative materials with rising crack resistance characteristics. The material's capacity to develop non-local damage is assumed to decrease with the actual damage level. This decrease relates linearly with the remaining resources of the material in dissipating energy. The hypothesis, which proposes a square root function for theoretical J-R curves, is verified by the regression analysis of experimental data regarding a European round-robin test of different steels.
The paper deals with the way in which the energy balance should be formulated when nonlocal damage processes associated with energy dissipation accompany crack growth. The local energy balance is used to rearrange the relationships between the different energies consumed both in the process of material separation and due to nonlocal damaging around the crack tip. The first law of thermodynamics allows the identification or definition of appropriate crack driving forces. The results are compared with recent ideas of Turner on defining tearing resistance for uncontained yield through energy dissipation rate.
A hypothesis regarding the conversion of mechanical into thermal energies within the nonlocal damage region is formulated to model the fracture behaviour of energy dissipative materials with rising crack resistance characteristics. The material's capacity to develop nonlocal damage beyond blunting is assumed to decrease with the actual damage level. This decrease relates linearly with the remaining resources of the material in dissipating energy. The hypothesis, wich proposes a square root function for theoretical J-R curves, is verified by the regression analysis of experimental data regarding a European round robin test of different steels.
On the basis of a more-detailed physicsl and thermodynamical analysis of the energy balance within the near crack tip region an integral relation has been derived which leads to various fracture concepts specified for different materials. Taking into account the finiteness of the “process region” and further physically based assumptions concerning the dissipation mechanism more specified and “more accurate” path-independent integrals follow. The generalized JTJ –Integral concept (WILL, MICHEL) is derived which also leads to nonlinear R–curves which fit the experimentel curves quite well in a very broad region of material behaviour. The concept is also applied to new materials such as metal-matrix composites and ceramic materials. Experimental results based as well on laser measurement techniques and the micro-moire deformation measurement method in a scanning electron microscope directly combined with image processing and in combination with finite element calculations demonstrate that such kinds of “hybrid” techniques are suitable for verification of fracture concepts for non-classical materials.
This paper focuses on the theoretical simulation of strength and failure of specimens with nonlocal damage. A concept is proposed for quantitative interpretation and prediction of nonlinear, nominal stress-strain curves of damaged materials like fine ceramics or intermetallic alloys. For that reason methods of damage mechanics and of probability theory are combined.
A theoretical model of stress transfer between a transversal isotropic fibre and the surrounding matrix material in a uniaxially fibre-reinforced composite near a single matrix flaw is discussed including friction controlled fibre-matrix interface debonding. The rise of fracture toughness due to frictional fibre sliding is studied accounting for Weibull strength distribution of fibres. The total dissipative work may be used as figure of merit regarding the damage tolerance. A critical evaluation is presented concerning some previous models of local failure probabilities. Numerical results are demonstrated. Conditions for an optimized C/Al-composite are presented.
Significant improvements of the fracture toughness are striven for ceramic materials using micromechanical mechanisms of crack tip shielding. The application of Fine Ceramics to structures and engines is planed increasingly in expectancy of higher strength. The aim of the article is the verification of common brittle fracture tests employed for advanced ceramics. Theoretical aspects of the R-curve behaviour are analysed to feature reliably damage of materials. Stable crack growth and failure of standard specimens are assessed using theoretical simulations of experiments. The results are compared with real data. Suggestions are made to interpret properly measurements and to select appropriate specimen geometries for materials which show a distinctive R-curve behaviour.
