Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has a transformative potential in nursing. The adoption of AI in Indian nursing education is often hindered by limited resources and traditionally structured education systems. In this context, developing evidence-based insights to enhance AI integration into nursing education in India is imperative. Objective: This study examined the relationships and mediating effects of subjective norms, self-efficacy, personal relevance, basic knowledge, and behavioral intention on AI learning among undergraduate nursing students in India, using a modified theory of planned behavior (TPB) framework. Methods: An explanatory, cross-sectional survey was conducted among 335 nursing students in Punjab, India, to examine factors influencing learning of AI, using a modified TPB framework. Data were collected by the investigator through a self-administered questionnaire based on TPB constructs, including attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention, with actual learning as the dependent variable. Data were collected by the investigator through Google Forms administered in classrooms. Hypothetical paths were analyzed using SPSS 28.0.ResultsContrary to the TPB assumptions, behavioral intention did not predict learning (beta = 0.17, p = 0.08), whereas subjective norms emerged as the strongest predictor (beta = 0.42, p < 0.001). Basic knowledge showed no direct influence on learning (beta = 0.17, p = 0.08), whereas self-efficacy showed marginal significance (beta = 0.28, p = 0.051). Personal relevance influenced mediators such as subjective norms (beta = 0.42) and basic knowledge (beta = 0.36) but lacked a direct effect on learning, highlighting systemic barriers. Discussion: This study challenges individual-centric models by prioritizing sociocultural factors and systemic barriers in AI education, revealing that collective support and applied training are more important than intention to learn AI. The findings suggest that social influence significantly impacts AI learning, whereas the intention to engage with AI does not necessarily lead to actual learning. Additionally, personal relevance influences key mediators but does not directly enhance learning outcomes. These insights highlight the need for policy reforms that focus on infrastructure development, peer and faculty support, and practical learning opportunities that can help translate students' interest in AI into meaningful learning outcomes.
INTRODUCTION:Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and poses an increasing public health challenge in India. The rising incidence of myocardial infarction, especially among younger individuals, is concerning. AIM:To compare cardiovascular risk factors, clinical presentation, angiographic patterns and reperfusion characteristics between younger and older adults presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). METHODS:A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 260 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in South India with a first episode of STEMI. Participants were selected using convenience sampling and included 65 younger adults (≤45 years) and 195 older adults (>45 years) in a 1:3 ratio. Data were obtained through structured interviews and review of the medical records. Continuous variables were analysed using the Independent Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, while categorical variables were assessed using the χ2 or Fisher's exact test. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed with results reported as ORs and adjusted ORs with 95% CIs. RESULTS:The mean age was 40.14±15.79 years in the younger group and 60.84±8.25 years in the older group. Younger patients had a significantly higher male predominance, greater alcohol consumption, positive family history of premature cardiovascular disease, shorter sleep duration and higher anxiety scores. In contrast, older adults have a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Multiple logistic regression revealed an increase in average sleep duration was associated with a 0.57-unit increase in the log-odds of being aged >45 years. On the contrary, the anxiety score was inversely associated with older adults (β=-0.10; AOR=0.90; 95% CI 0.82 to 0.99). CONCLUSION:Younger patients with acute STEMI exhibited an increased burden of modifiable lifestyle and psychosocial risk factors, emphasising the need for age-specific preventive interventions.
Introduction There is an increasing need to foster resilience among nursing students to prepare them for the challenges of the demanding healthcare field. Objective To assess resilience, well-being, and mindful self-care and to examine the factors that contribute to resilience among nursing students. Methods A multicenter, cross-sectional, correlational design was used, with participants recruited from four universities across Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions of India through convenience sampling. The participants completed an online survey incorporating the Brief Resilience Scale, World Health Organization Well-Being Index, and Mindful Self-Care Scale. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the study variables, while independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA examined group differences. Pearson’s correlation was used to assess relationships among variables, and linear regression was used to identify factors associated with resilience. Results A total of 879 nursing students were included in the study. Most of the students demonstrated moderate resilience (63.7%), with 35.4% showing low resilience and 0.9% high resilience. Most reported good well-being (84.2%). The overall mean mindful self-care score was 104.46 ± 30.83 (64.08% of the maximum), with the highest subdomain scores in supportive relationships (67.48%), mindful awareness (67.00%), and general practices (66.87%) and the lowest in mindful relaxation (61.27%) and physical care (59.25%). Both mindful self-care (β = 0.011, p < 0.001) and well-being (β = 0.076, p < 0.001) were associated with resilience, explaining 5.1% of its variance (R 2 = 0.051), which remained significant after adjusting for demographic factors (final model R 2 = 0.060, Adjusted R 2 = 0.050). Conclusion The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and strategies to strengthen the resilience and mindful selfcare capacities of nursing students. The study suggests that in addition to mindful selfcare and well-being, resilience is influenced by a broader range of determinants beyond those captured in the present study.
IntroductionPsychological well-being is crucial for nursing students, who often face academic and clinical stressors that disrupt their sleep patterns. Insomnia severity, sleep hygiene, and sleep locus of control are key sleep-related factors that potentially influence mental health. However, the combined effects of these factors on psychological well-being remain underexplored, particularly among Indian nursing students.MethodsA cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 418 nursing students from two nursing colleges in Northwestern India. Data were collected using validated instruments measuring insomnia severity (Athens Insomnia Scale), sleep hygiene (Sleep Hygiene Index), sleep locus of control (Sleep Locus of Control Scale), and psychological well-being (WHO-5 Well-Being Index). Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, two-stage cluster analysis (hierarchical and k-means), and multiple linear regression, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.ResultsThree distinct sleep profiles were identified: insomnia-prone (21.3%), intermediate (51.4%), and adaptive (27.3%). The Insomnia-Prone cluster exhibited the highest insomnia severity, poorest sleep hygiene, least adaptive sleep locus of control beliefs, and lowest psychological well-being. The Adaptive cluster showed the most favorable sleep characteristics and highest well-being. Regression analysis revealed that insomnia severity (β = −0.31, p < 0.001), poor sleep hygiene (β = −0.13, p = 0.004), and chance-oriented sleep locus of control (β = −0.12, p = 0.04) significantly predicted lower psychological well-being, collectively explaining 20% of the variance in the data.ConclusionThe three distinct sleep profiles identified in this study highlight the differential vulnerability of psychological well-being across the student population. Sleep-related behavioral and cognitive factors are associated with the psychological well-being of nursing students. Addressing maladaptive sleep patterns through tailored interventions could support the psychological well-being of nursing students.
Objectives: One of the major distressing symptoms related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is excessive drooling of saliva, also termed sialorrhoea. Evaluating its prevalence and severity among Indian patients with ALS is essential for understanding the magnitude and impact of the problem. A crosssectional survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence and severity of sialorrhoea among individuals diagnosed with ALS. We also intended to assess the current pharmacological management practice for sialorrhoea in ALS patients. Materials and Methods: Patients with ALS enrolled in the Neuropalliative Registry of a quaternary care centre for neurological disorders were included in the study. As part of routine follow-up, telephonic interviews were conducted with either the patients or their next of kin. The extent of sialorrhoea was assessed using the sialorrhoea scoring scale. Results: Seventy patients were included in the study. The mean age at presentation was 51.8 (standard deviation [SD]-12.8) years. The majority were males (74.3%). The mean duration of illness was 21.6 (SD 15.7) months. The majority (80%) had limb onset ALS. Forty per cent of the patients in the study had some degree of sialorrhoea. Mild drooling was present in 15 patients (21.4%), moderate in 9 (12.9%), severe in 2 (2.9%) and profuse drooling in another 2.9% of patients. A total of 9 patients (12.9%) were receiving anticholinergic medication. Patients diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS had a significantly greater degree of sialorrhoea than those with limb onset presentation (P = 0.008). In addition, a longer duration of illness showed a positive correlation with the severity of sialorrhoea (r = 0.30, P = 0.012). Conclusion: Sialorrhoea is a prevalent and clinically significant symptom in individuals with ALS. The severity of sialorrhoea is greater in patients with bulbar onset ALS and tends to increase with longer illness duration. A substantial proportion of patients may benefit from recommended treatment for excessive salivation and saliva-related issues. This study underscores the need for screening of distressing symptoms as sialorrhoea, in ALS patients. The treating teams need to have a heightened awareness regarding the same so that treatment options can be offered to the patients.
IntroductionProfessional identity, academic satisfaction, and career commitment are important psychological and educational factors that may influence nursing students’ long-term engagement with the nursing profession. In countries such as India, where nursing workforce retention and migration are major concerns, understanding these factors is essential for strengthening future workforce stability. This study examined the levels of professional identity, academic satisfaction, and career commitment among undergraduate nursing students in India, identified student profiles based on these constructs, and examined whether academic satisfaction showed a statistical indirect association in the relationship between professional identity and career commitment.MethodsA cross-sectional correlational study was conducted among 354 undergraduate nursing students from two nursing colleges in India. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected using structured, validated self-administered questionnaires measuring professional identity, academic satisfaction, and career commitment. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, k-means cluster analysis, mediation analysis using PROCESS Model 4, and multiple linear regression were performed.ResultsStudents reported high professional identity (mean = 66.98, SD = 8.78) and academic satisfaction (mean = 19.15, SD = 3.67), but moderate career commitment (mean = 12.79, SD = 2.16). Professional identity was positively correlated with academic satisfaction (r = 0.517, p < 0.001) and career commitment (r = 0.224, p < 0.001). Academic satisfaction was also positively correlated with career commitment (r = 0.283, p < 0.001). Cluster analysis identified three student profiles: low identity and satisfaction profile, high identity, satisfaction, and commitment profile, and higher identity/satisfaction but lower commitment profile. PROCESS analysis showed a significant indirect association between professional identity and career commitment through academic satisfaction, (B = 0.0378, 95% CI: 0.0165–0.0607). In regression analysis, professional identity, academic satisfaction, and leadership involvement were significantly associated with career commitment. The model explained 11.9% of the variance in career commitment.ConclusionCareer commitment among nursing students was associated with professional identity, academic satisfaction, and leadership involvement. However, the modest explained variance suggests that additional personal, educational, and contextual factors should be explored. Longitudinal and multicenter studies are recommended to better understand the development of career commitment among nursing students.
Introduction Plastic pollution is a growing global concern with serious implications for environmental sustainability and public health. As future healthcare providers, nursing students play a critical role in promoting awareness and sustainable practice. Objective This study aimed to assess the consumption behavior of undergraduate nursing students and their perceptions regarding the impact of plastic pollution on human health and conditions, as well as the seriousness of its effects on society. Methods Data were gathered through a cross-sectional online survey of 511 nursing students recruited through convenience sampling at two selected health sciences universities in India. Results Over one-third of the students (35.2%) used single-use plastic goods daily. The majority of students (29.2%) cited convenience as their primary reason for using plastics, while 25% and 21.1% indicated that they made minimal or no attempt to reduce the number of plastics they utilized. Nearly four out of ten (41.9%) students were unaware of the difference between biodegradable and recyclable plastics. Over half of the respondents perceived a high impact of plastic pollution on human health (52.1%) and the environment (81.4%). Respiratory (84.2%) and oncological (83.9%) conditions were the most frequently attributed health consequences. Students rated water pollution (67.9%) and marine environmental damage (61.8%) as the most serious societal impacts. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive association between perceived health impacts and pro-environmental behaviors (r = 0.121, p < 0.01), while regression analysis identified perceived health impacts (B = 0.032, p = 0.048) as a significant but weak predictor of behavior. Discussion This study highlights moderate to high perceptions among nursing students regarding the health and environmental impacts of plastic pollution, yet reveals gaps in plastic consumption behavior, with continued use of single-use plastics due to convenience. However, the regression results showed that the model explained only a small proportion of the variance in plastic-use behavior, indicating that other unmeasured factors may influence these behaviors. Conclusions This study underscores the need for structured, policy-driven educational interventions in healthcare training to transform students’ concerns about plastic pollution into consistent, environmentally responsible behaviors.
Compassion fatigue is a significant concern for nurses because they are constantly exposed to suffering. This study aimed to develop and validate a Compassion Fatigue Assessment Scale for Indian nurses. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional design was used to evaluate the psychometric properties, including the validity and reliability of the developed tool. A total of 200 nurses from two government and two private hospitals participated in the study between February and June 2022. Data were collected using a sociodemographic sheet, the Compassion Fatigue Assessment Scale, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Construct validity was assessed using principal component analysis, followed by examination of inter-domain correlations, while convergent validity was established using the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Reliability was tested using Cronbach’s α. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation identified a ten-factor structure across the 36 items, explaining 60.34
Background Maternal position during delivery can affect the physiology of labour and the mechanics of childbirth.Objective The study aimed to evaluate the impact of an upright position during the first stage of labour on maternal outcomes.Methods This parallel group randomised control trial was conducted from April to June 2020 among 60 women (30 each in the experimental and control groups) admitted to the selected hospital in Punjab, India. Women who entered the active stage of labour naturally with a single live foetus in cephalic presentation, aged 18-45 years, and with normal body mass index were randomly assigned either to the experimental or control group using a concealed envelope method. Women in the experimental group were informed and encouraged to adopt the upright position, while those in the control group received the standard routine care during the first stage of labour. The effectiveness of upright positions during the first stage of labour was assessed in terms of duration of the first, second, and third stages of labour, mode of delivery, and perineal lacerations. Outcome assessors were blinded to the intervention. The differences in the groups were evaluated by mean, median, frequency, percentage, Chi-square, and t-test.Results The results of 60 women were analysed. Women in the experimental group experienced a significant reduction in the incidence of instrumental delivery (p =0.005), perineal laceration (p =0.001), and duration of the first stage (p =0.0001) and third stage (p =0.0001) of labour compared to those in the control group. No harm was reported across the study groups.Conclusion This study urges nurses and midwives to recommend the use of upright positions during the first stage of labour to reduce the duration of labour and incidence of perineal laceration among women.Clinical Trial Registration Number CTRI/2022/04/041740.
We describe the complex care needs faced by families in dementia care and specialized multidisciplinary palliative care delivered through home visits as a feasible way to support advancing stages of dementia. Participants with confirmed diagnosis of dementia were enrolled in home-based care as part of the neuropalliative and supportive care services. Disease severity, functionality, palliative care concerns, and caregiver burden were assessed at intake and three months at their homes. Forty-seven participants were enrolled. The mean age of participants was 65.48 (13.12); with more female patients (n = 27; 57%). 34/47 (72%) completed the reassessment. Moderate levels of caregiver burden were reported at 31.57 (17.9), range 18-80 at baseline, which showed a slight increase at three months follow-up, though palliative care concerns significantly reduced (Cohen's d = 1.16). Multidisciplinary home-based palliative care is feasible and can reduce the palliative care concerns in dementia. Further longitudinal studies with robust methodology are needed to explore the specific outcomes.

Nursing students often enter programs with idealistic perceptions shaped by personal experiences, family, and the media. However, in resource-limited healthcare systems, discrepancies between expectations and reality can adversely impact health and well-being, resulting in discontentment, absenteeism, and high attrition rates. This study explored undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of becoming registered nurses and the factors influencing these views. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted using the 34-item Perceptions of Being a Registered Nurse (PRN) tool with a five-point Likert scale. The survey was conducted with a representative sample of 579 nursing students recruited from three universities in different regions of India. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 27, with significance set at P < 0.05. Students rated professionalism (M = 0.90), communication skills (M = 0.88), and patient advocacy (M = 0.85) highly, while work stress (M = 0.42) and unpredictability (M = 0.38) were notable concerns. Perceptions varied across academic years (H = 14.09, p < 0.01), with third-year students showing the highest scores. Having a disease negatively impacted perception (B = -8.33, p < 0.01), whereas aspirations to migrate (B = 4.53, p < 0.01) and higher education (B = 2.99, p < 0.05) were positive predictors. Proactively addressing nursing students’ perceptions throughout their education can inform targeted educational reforms, support sustainable workforce planning, and drive policy interventions that enhance retention and ensure a resilient nursing profession in India. Background:Anemia during pregnancy is a global public health concern that can negatively impact maternal and fetal outcomes. It is a major health concern among antenatal mothers in India, and there is substantial variation in the prevalence of anemia in different parts of India. Understanding the problems in the regions of the country can help devise locally viable plans to mitigate the problem, and this study aimed to assess the prevalence of anemia among antenatal women in north-western India. Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study involving convenient selection of antenatal women was conducted in selected hospitals in Punjab, India, between July 2022 and December 2022. The data were collected using structured questionnaires. The prevalence of anemia and its contributing factors were ascertained using descriptive statistics as well as bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses. Results:Out Of 300 pregnant women evaluated for anemia, 70.7% had anemia; 35.71%, 27.33%, and 7.75% had mild, moderate, and severe anemia, respectively. Educational level (χ 2 = 21.90, df = 299, p = 0.01) and family income level (χ 2 = 12.46, df = 299, p = 0.006) were associated with anemia among antenatal women. Parity (χ 2 = 15.58, df = 299, p = 0.01), gestational age (χ 2 = 14.95, df = 299, p = 0.02), and consumption of iron and folic acid tablets (t 299 = 60.56, p < 0.001) were pregnancy-related factors significantly associated with anemia. Conclusions:According to this study, anemia in pregnant women is highly prevalent in north-western India and has a number of modifiable contributing factors. These factors should be considered for the prevention and control of anemia in pregnant women during antenatal care and visits.
INTRODUCTION: Neuromonitoring enhances patient assessment in neuroscience nursing, yet its integration varies globally. At the 2025 International Neuroscience Nursing Research Symposium, nurses from 16 countries discussed the adoption of neuromonitoring devices. This proceedings article explores international perspectives on neuromonitoring use, barriers, and facilitators. METHODS: Participants summarized their country's neuromonitoring technology level, key facilitators and barriers to adoption, and devices with the greatest potential impact. RESULTS: Significant disparities exist in neuromonitoring accessibility. Developed countries frequently use continuous electroencephalography, intracranial pressure monitoring, and pupillometry, whereas lower-resource settings face financial and training limitations. Key facilitators include policy support, funding, and interdisciplinary training, whereas barriers include cost, limited resources, and competency gaps. CONCLUSION: Nurses worldwide recognize how neuromonitoring may improve outcomes. International collaboration, standardization of training, and technological advancements could help bridge disparities in access and implementation. Addressing systemic barriers and investing in education and policy support will enhance equitable neuromonitoring integration, ultimately improving neurological patient care across diverse healthcare settings.
BACKGROUND:Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) pose a major public health challenge to the Indian health system. The trajectory of patients from the site of injury to definitive management needs to be understood to improve prehospital management. OBJECTIVE:We conducted a prospective survey to review the epidemiological and pre-hospital characteristics of TBI patients requiring emergency surgical intervention at a level I neuro-trauma care center. METHODS AND MATERIALS:Patients who underwent emergency neurosurgical management for TBI at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS, Bangalore) between June 2021 and December 2021 were included in the study. RESULTS:A total of 214 patients were included in the study (86% males). The most common cause of TBI was road traffic accidents (70%) which involved a motorized two-wheeler in 87% of the cases. No safety gear was used in 87% of the road traffic accidents. The median delay in first contact with any medical facility was 60 min. The median time of seeking care at NIMHANS was 6 h and 50 min after the injury. More than one-third of the patients had visited two or more health facilities before reaching NIMHANS for treatment. CONCLUSION:Road traffic accidents without safety gear constitute the major cause of TBIs requiring emergency surgery. A major challenge exists in prehospital care and organized hospital transfer of acute TBI patients requiring emergency surgery.
Introduction Human exposure to plastics through air, water, and soil causes a variety of significant and complex health hazards. The aim of the present study was to explore the level of awareness regarding plastic pollution and the level of engagement in actions towards plastic pollution prevention and environmental sustainability promotion among nursing students. Methods This quantitative, cross-sectional survey was conducted at two selected health sciences universities in India. Convenience sampling was used to enrol 511 undergraduate nursing students. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information regarding awareness of plastic pollution, its impact on human health and the environment, sustainable alternatives to plastics, levels of engagement in preventing plastic pollution and promoting environmental sustainability, and opinions towards strategies for mitigating plastic pollution. Results The ages of the participants ranged from 18 to 28 years, with a mean age of 21 ± 2.22 years. While 41.5% of the participants had adequate awareness of plastic pollution, only 14.1% demonstrated adequate levels of engagement in plastic pollution prevention and actions promoting environmental sustainability. A positive correlation was found between awareness of plastic pollution and engagement in plastic pollution prevention and environmental sustainability promotion (r = 0.19, p < 0.001). Discussion A substantial discrepancy exists between nursing students' awareness of plastic pollution and their actual engagement in pro-environmental behaviours. Additionally, the results indicate that enhancing awareness can lead to improved pro-environmental behaviors, underscoring the importance of preparing future nurses adequately as agents and advocates for environmental health and sustainability. Conclusion This study highlights the need to integrate environmental sustainability education into nursing curricula to bridge the gap between awareness and action.
Mobile health applications (mHealth apps) in the healthcare industry are rapidly expanding, offering new opportunities for improving healthcare delivery, accessibility, and patient outcomes. They transformed the way medical services are delivered, particularly in resource-scarce settings. The success of these applications largely depends on their acceptance and adoption by healthcare professionals, including nurses. Understanding the factors that influence the intention to use these technologies is essential for designing applications that effectively meet the needs of future healthcare providers. This study aims to empirically explore factors influencing the intention to use mHealth apps among nursing students. A quantitative, exploratory survey tested and validated using the PLS-SEM on a convenience sample of 567 students from two Indian institutes. Findings reveal that ease of use plays a central role in shaping students' willingness to adopt mHealth apps, with time efficiency emerging as a significant determinant. Students were more likely to use these apps when they seamlessly fit into their routines and enhanced their workflow. Social influences, including peer encouragement and institutional support, significantly shaped their attitudes toward adoption. Privacy and trust concerns also played a crucial role, as students expressed a need for secure platforms that protect sensitive health information while ensuring reliability. Additionally, affordability influenced how users perceived accessibility and usability, highlighting the need for cost-effective solutions. However, researchers found that demographic factors such as age, gender, and study year had minimal influence. The study findings emphasize Prioritizing usability, security, and affordability can enhance mHealth app adoption, particularly in resource-limited setting.
Introduction and objective Mobile health applications (mHealth) can bring revolutionary changes to health care by making it more accessible, cost-effective, and efficient. The successful adoption of mHealth is largely determined by its acceptance by providers and end users. The acceptance of mHealth among nursing students, who are the future nurses, needs to be understood. This study aimed to determine the preferences, acceptability, and usage of mHealth applications among undergraduate nursing students. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in two selected universities in southern and northern India. A convenience sample of 567 undergraduate nursing students was recruited for the study. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire via Google Forms. Results mHealth applications were presently used by 32.9% of the students. The most common types of mHealth applications used were diet related (27.6%) and lifestyle related (23.4%). The majority of nursing students were willing to use mobile phones for consulting health professionals (78.8%) for prevention and management of health and disease. (83.1%), and for emergencies (73.3%). While more than half of the students were willing to recommend mHealth applications for patients, those students who were using two or more mHealth apps were more likely to recommend the same for the patients. Conclusion The results of the study highlight about the usage of mobile health applications among the nursing students. The students consider mHealth applications to be useful for delivering health-related services to end users. The study underscores the need to sensitize students about the possible usage of mHealth in healthcare delivery.
