The nomenclature and taxonomy of Plagiogyria scandens Mett. and P. pycnophylla (Kunze) Mett. have been discussed and P. communis Ching is considered a superfluous name for P. scandens.
Indian material of the genus Vittaria J. Smith earlier reported as V. scolopendrina (Bory) Thw. by various workers represents V. amboinensis Fee. V. scolopendrina (Bory) Thw. does not occur in India. Detailed description of V. amboinensis Fee has been given. However, to facilitate easy identification, key and illustrations of both the species have been provided.
The occurrence of Pronephrium asperum (Presl) Holtt. in India has been confirmed. P. simplex (Hook.) Holtt. has been reported as new to India. Both the species have been described in detail with illustrations to facilitate easy identification.
Lindsaea bouillodii is a confused taxon as regards to its identity, nomenclature and distribution as given by various workers in the past. The report of its occurrence in Madras Presidency by Beddome (1865, 1883). has been substantiated by its recent collection from Tamil Nadu. It is attempted to clarify the matter by providing key to the taxa confused with it, detailed description and illustrations. Three new recrods of species i.e, L. glandulifera V.A.V.R. and L. malayensis Holtt, for India and L. chienii Ching for Burma are reported. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided to facilitate identification.
Colysis digitata (Bak.) ching, C. longisora (Bak.) Ching, and C. pentaphylla (Bak.) Ching are being reported for the first time from India. A revised key to the Indian species of the genus Colysis Presl section Dictyogramme Presl, has been provided.
Central National Herbarium (CAL) is of immense value in assessing the biodiversity and status of occurrence of particular species in Indian region by virtue of possessing the treasure of herbarium specimens, since the last two centuries. About 195 genera of Pteridophytes are known to occur in India, of which only 20 genera are being represented by singular species or monotypie. The status of such genera in India has been assessed on the basis of specimens housed in CAL with probable conservation strategies to be adopted.
Pronephrium cuspidatum (Bl.) Holtt. originally known from Malesia has been actually reported for the first time from Nicobar Islands, India and the Indian material earlier known as Meniscium cuspidatum Bl. represented Pronephrium nudatum (Roxb. ex Griff.) Holtt. and P. lakhimpurensis (Rosenst.) Holtt. from North-Eastern Himalayas. The current nomenclature and illustrations for the present species with key to the taxa earlier confused in Indian literature have been provided.
