High-resolution resonant photoemission (PE) studies of α-like metallic Ce systems reveal much less α-like character at the surface than in the bulk. For strongly hybridized Ce compounds like CeRh3, the bulk 4f-PE spectra and, in particular, the Bremsstrahlung isochromate spectroscopy (BIS) spectra are found to be better described on the basis of 4f- and 5d-density of states from LDA band structure calculations than by a single impurity (SI) Anderson model. These results demonstrate a band-like character of the highly correlated 4f states in strongly α-like Ce systems and mark the limits of applicability of the SI model.
The electronic structure of CeRh3 Was studied by photoemission and bremsstrahlung isochromate spectroscopy (BIS). An analysis of the spectra, taken at different temperatures, on the basis of the Anderson single-impurity model leads to considerable inconsistencies that mark the limits of applicability of the model. On the other hand, the BIS spectrum of CeRh3 can be well described by the results of a local-density-approximation band-structure calculation. These findings confirm a bandlike character of the 4f states in strongly hybridized Ce systems.
The angular correlations of protons evaporated from the compound nucleus124Ce exhibit strong anisotropies which are inconsistent with the emission from a spherical source. The data can be explained by an enhanced emission probability due to a lower Coulomb barrier perpendicular to the spin axis of strongly deformed nuclei.
