It is common agronomic practice to perform a formal evaluation of the behaviour of new varieties under natural field conditions. Accordingly, shortly after the optimization of genetic engineering techniques on trees, a number of field trials were set up to assess GM trees modified for different genes. Here, we review the work that has been done in this arena in Europe over the last 25 years, and summarize what we learned from these experiments. GM tree field trials remain the exception rather than the rule in Europe. Several trials have been destroyed by anti-GMO activists and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain authorization for a GM tree field trial. These increasing constraints on GM tree trials within Europe are both surprising and counter-productive as we learned a lot from the past 25 years of experiments and the results were promisingly positive: (1) Phenotypic effects resulting from transgene expression in GM trees grown in the field appears to be stable, albeit variable; (2) most field studies have validated earlier observations made under greenhouse conditions, although in some cases the modification of target traits was less obvious in fluctuating field environments, and in a few cases had severe growth and developmental penalties; (3) non-target effects were consistently within the range of natural variation. Overall, the European GM tree field trials failed to exemplify any significant tangible risks. Based on this evidence, it seems appropriate that Europe should now move forward beyond small confined trials to larger scale experiments better fitted to a broader context of evaluation and environmental assessment.
Biofuel, peoples' long awaiting alternative fuel, is yet to struggle a long way to reach in retail outlet all over the world as an economical and environmental friendly fuel. Biofuels include bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, bio-synthetic gas (bio-syngas), bio-oil, bio-char, Fischer-Tropsch liquids, and biohydrogen. Among these bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas are predominant which can be produced either using chemical catalyst or biocatalyst from biomass. At present, the conventional process involves the chemical catalyst while a rigorous research is focused on using a biocatalyst. This review brings out the advantages and disadvantages of using different type of catalyst in biofuel production and emphasis on new technologies as an alternative to conventional technologies.
This study examined who among the 526 fourth to sixth graders are nominated as among the coolest kids in their class. There were two questions: (1) Are popular-aggressive (tough) children nominated as cool by a broad spectrum of their peers, or only by a select few? (2) Does variability in children's cool nominations more closely follow their individual characteristics or group affiliations? Three-level hierarchical linear modeling (nominators in groups in classrooms) tested the study hypotheses. The main finding was that children in aggressive groups nominated tough peers as cool and children in nonaggressive groups nominated popular-nonaggressive (model) peers, regardless of nominators' individual characteristics or the prominence of their groups across diverse classroom contexts. Girls were proportionately more likely to nominate tough than model boys, but only a minority (less than 25 percent) of relatively aggressive girls nominated any boys as cool. Findings indicate that normative boy and girl peer cultures give broad reputational support to some aggressive children.
Examined the nominations that elementary students with mild disabilities made for peers they perceived as cool. The total sample was comprised of 948 students (496 girls, 452 boys) from the metropolitan Chicago area and North Carolina and included 107 (11.3%) students with mild disabilities. Overall, students with mild disabilities nominated prosocial and athletic peers who affiliate with students with mild disabilities. However, aggressive boys who are central in the social network were highly likely to view aggressive peers as cool. Results are discussed in relation to implications for social interventions for students with mild disabilities.
This study examined peer affiliations of aggressive children in a sample of 948 students (496 girls, 452 boys) from 59 elementary classrooms (4th-6th grades). Groups were identified as zero aggressive, nonaggressive, aggressive, and mixed. The deviant peer group hypothesis was partially supported. Two thirds of aggressive boys and one half of aggressive girls were members of nonaggressive or mixed peer groups. Unpopular aggressive boys were most likely to be members of nonaggressive groups, whereas popular aggressive boys were most likely to be in aggressive and mixed groups. Aggressive and nonaggressive associates tended to be similar on key social characteristics (i.e., popularity, athleticism, leadership).
This study examined subtypes of popular 4th-6th grade boys (N = 452). Popular-prosocial (model) and popular-antisocial (tough) configurations were identified by means of teacher ratings and compared with peer and self-assessments and social centrality measures. Peers perceived model boys as cool, athletic, leaders, cooperative, studious, not shy, and nonaggressive. Peers perceived tough boys as cool, athletic, and antisocial. Model boys saw themselves as nonaggressive and academically competent. Tough boys saw themselves as popular, aggressive, and physically competent. Tough boys were disproportionately African American, particularly when African Americans were a minority in their classrooms. Model and tough boys were overrepresented at nuclear social centrality levels. These findings suggest that highly aggressive boys can be among the most popular and socially connected children in elementary classrooms.
Configural analyses were conducted with teacher assessments of students' interpersonal competence to identify distinct behavioral configurations in a sample of 948 students in 59 elementary classrooms. Seven configurations were identified for boys and seven for girls. The distribution of 107 students with mild disabilities was examined across configurations. Fifty-four percent of boys and 64% of girls with mild disabilities were in configurations that may indicate adjustment problems or poor outcomes in adolescence and adulthood. Differences in peer assessments and self-perceptions of students with mild disabilities were examined in relation to teacher-assessed behavioral configurations. Results are discussed in terms of implications for social interventions for students with mild disabilities.
The social integration of students with mild disabilities was examined in 59 elementary classrooms. 198 students with mild disabilities were included in the sample of 1,538 students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. 3 aspects of the social relations of students with mild disabilities were assessed with questionnaires: peer group membership, peer-assessed behavioral characteristics, and the peer-assessed behavioral characteristics of their associates. Most students with mild disabilities were members of classroom peer groups. However, students with mild disabilities were overrepresented as social isolates (20%). Students with mild disabilities differed from general education and academically gifted students on peer-assessed behavioral characteristics, were underrepresented in prosocial peer groups, and overrepresented in antisocial peer groups. Students with mild disabilities who had high levels of prosocial behavior tended to be members of high-prosocial peer groups. Students with mild disabilities who had high levels of antisocial behavior tended to be members of high-antisocial peer groups. Implications for intervention research are discussed.
