Transformer models produce advanced text representations that have been used to break through the hard challenge of natural language understanding. Using the Transformer’s attention mechanism, which acts as a language learning memory, trained on tens of billions of words, a word sense disambiguation (WSD) algorithm can now construct a more faithful vectorial representation of the context of a word to be disambiguated. Working with a set of 34 lemmas of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs selected from the National Reference Corpus of Romanian (CoRoLa), we show that using BERT’s attention heads at all hidden layers, we can devise contextual vectors of the target lemma that produce better clusters of lemma’s senses than the ones obtained with standard BERT embeddings. If we automatically translate the Romanian example sentences of the target lemma into English, we show that we can reliably infer the number of senses with which the target lemma appears in the CoRoLa. We also describe an unsupervised WSD algorithm that, using a Romanian BERT model and a few example sentences of the target lemma’s senses, can label the Romanian induced sense clusters with the appropriate sense labels, with an average accuracy of 64%.
This paper will attempt to determine experimentally if POS tagging of unseen words produces comparable performance, in terms of accuracy, as for words that were rarely seen in the training set (i.e. frequency less than 5), or more frequently seen (i.e. frequency greater than 10). To compare accuracies objectively, we will use the odds ratio statistic and its confidence interval testing to show that odds of being correct on unseen words are close to odds of being correct on rarely seen words. For the training of the POS taggers, we use different Romanian BERT models that are freely available on HuggingFace.
This paper presents the design and evolution of the RELATE platform. It provides a high-performance environment for natural language processing activities, specially constructed for Romanian language. Initially developed for text processing, it has been recently updated to integrate audio processing tools. Technical details are provided with regard to core components. We further present different usage scenarios, derived from actual use in national and international research projects, thus demonstrating that RELATE is a mature, modern, state-of-the-art platform for processing Romanian language corpora. Finally, we present very recent developments including bimodal (text and audio) features available within the platform.
The transparency of the judicial process and the consistency of judicial decisions can be improved through their publication. Access to jurisprudence is of paramount importance both for law professionals (judges, lawyers, law students) and for the larger public. However, public access must ensure the preservation of privacy for people involved, in accordance with national and international regulations. This paper presents the work behind building an artificial intelligence system for the anonymization of Romanian jurisprudence, allowing it to be accessed through the ReJust portal operated by the Superior Council of Magistracy in Romania.
This paper introduces the USPDATRO dataset. This is a speech dataset, in the Romanian language, constructed from open data, focusing on under-represented voice types (children, young and old people, and female voices). The paper covers the methodology behind the dataset construction, specific details regarding the dataset, and evaluation of existing Romanian Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems, with different architectures. Results indicate that more under-represented speech content is needed in the training of ASR systems. Our approach can be extended to other low-resourced languages, as long as open data are available.
With the rise of bidirectional encoder representations from Transformer models in natural language processing, the speech community has adopted some of their development methodologies. Therefore, the Wav2Vec models were introduced to reduce the data required to obtain state-of-the-art results. This work leverages this knowledge and improves the performance of the pre-trained speech models by simply replacing the fine-tuning dense layer with a lateral inhibition layer inspired by the biological process. Our experiments on Romanian, a low-resource language, show an average improvement of 12.5% word error rate (WER) using the lateral inhibition layer. In addition, we obtain state-of-the-art results on both the Romanian Speech Corpus and the Robin Technical Acquisition Corpus with 1.78% WER and 29.64% WER, respectively.
Speech datasets available for training Romanian automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are constructed around similar demographics (male voices, age between 19-29 years). In this paper, we present a dataset of underrepresented Romanian speech (USPDATRO), constructed from open data. We fine-tune a state-of-the-art Whisper model using existing datasets and evaluate the resulting model on the dataset of underrepresented speech. Results indicate that more such data is needed to improve the performance of Romanian ASR sytems.
The paper presents an open-domain Question Answering system for Romanian, answering COVID-19 related questions. The QA system pipeline involves automatic question processing, automatic query generation, web searching for the top 10 most relevant documents and answer extraction using a fine-tuned BERT model for Extractive QA, trained on a COVID-19 data set that we have manually created. The paper will present the QA system and its integration with the Romanian language technologies portal RELATE, the COVID-19 data set and different evaluations of the QA performance.
Machine Translation (MT)-powered chatbots are not established yet, however, we see an amazing future breaking language barriers and enabling conversation in multiple languages without time-consuming language model building and training, particularly for unde-rresourced languages. In this paper we focus on the under-resourced Luxembourgish language. This article describes an experiment we have done with a dataset containing administrative questions that we have manually created to offer BERT QA capabilities to a multilingual chatbot. The chatbot supports visual dialog flow diagram creation (through an interface called BotStudio) in which a dialog node manages the user question at a specific step. Dialog nodes can be matched to the user's question by using a BERT classification model which labels the question with a dialog node label.
This paper is about a multilingual chatbot developed for public administration within the CEF funded project ENRICH4ALL. We argue for multi-lingual chatbots empowered through MT and discuss the integration of the CEF eTranslation service in a chatbot solution.
This paper introduces a new Romanian speech corpus from the ROBIN project, called ROBIN Technical Acquisition Speech Corpus (ROBINTASC). Its main purpose was to improve the behaviour of a conversational agent, allowing human-machine interaction in the context of purchasing technical equipment. The paper contains a detailed description of the acquisition process, corpus statistics as well as an evaluation of the corpus influence on a low-latency ASR system as well as a dialogue component.
With the increased size of Universal Dependencies tree banks, several basic language processing kits (BLARK) for multiple languages appeared in recent years, indicating improved performances on different languages. Nevertheless, published results are not directly comparable for the Romanian language since different tools make use of different Universal Dependencies versions and different additional resources, such as pre-trained word embeddings. In this paper, we re-train several state-of-the-art tools for processing Romanian language by using a common methodology comprising of training and evaluating on the same version of RoRefTrees corpus and using the same pre-trained word embeddings from the representative corpus of contemporary Romanian language (CoRoLa). Furthermore, we also explore the capabilities of the trained models when faced with unseen text from a different domain. For this purpose, we further test the resulting model on the SiMoNERo corpus. We employ different metrics to assess the performance on operations like tokenization, sentence splitting, lemmatization, part-of-speech tagging and dependency parsing.
This paper presents RELATE (http://relate.racai.ro), a high-performance natural language platform designed for Romanian language. It is meant both for demonstration of available services, from text-span annotations to syntactic dependency trees as well as playing or automatically synthesizing Romanian words, and for the development of new annotated corpora. It also incorporates the search engines for the large COROLA reference corpus of contemporary Romanian and the Romanian wordnet. It integrates multiple text and speech processing modules and exposes their functionality through a web interface designed for the linguist researcher. It makes use of a scheduler-runner architecture, allowing processing to be distributed across multiple computing nodes. A series of input/output converters allows large corpora to be loaded, processed and exported according to user preferences.
This article presents the current outcomes of the MARCELL CEF Telecom project aiming to collect and deeply annotate a large comparable corpus of legal documents. The MARCELL corpus includes 7 monolingual sub-corpora (Bulgarian, Croatian, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak and Slovenian) containing the total body of respective national legislative documents. These sub-corpora are automatically sentence split, tokenized, lemmatized and morphologically and syntactically annotated. The monolingual sub-corpora are complemented by a thematically related parallel corpus (Croatian-English). The metadata and the annotations are uniformly provided for each language specific sub-corpus. Besides the standard morphosyntactic analysis plus named entity and dependency and/or noun phrase annotation, the corpus is enriched with the IATE and EuroVoc labels. The file format is CoNLL-U Plus Format, containing the ten columns specific to the CoNLL-U format and four extra columns specific to our corpora. The MARCELL corpora represent a rich and valuable source for further studies and developments in machine learning, cross-lingual terminological data extraction and classification.
The paper describes the micro-world-based dialog manager which was developed in the ROBIN project. The manager was designed to be loaded into the Pepper robot, used in real-world scenarios and interface with real-time automatic speech recognition and synthesis for Romanian language. A strict requirement for the development of the dialog manager was that it had to be configurable, with minimum user intervention, to a wide range of dialogue situations, such as assisting the elderly in day to day routine tasks or providing orientation in a building for new visitors. Thus, the dialog manager was programmed to configure itself from micro-world specification files containing definitions of the concepts one can speak about and definitions of the first-order predicates that are true in the micro-world.
We present the Romanian legislative corpus which is a valuable linguistic asset for the development of machine translation systems, especially for under-resourced languages. The knowledge that can be extracted from this resource is necessary for a deeper understanding of how law terminology is used and how it can be made more consistent. At this moment, the corpus contains more than 144k documents representing the legislative body of Romania. This corpus is processed and annotated at different levels: linguistically (tokenized, lemmatized and POS-tagged), dependency parsed, chunked, named entities identified and labeled with IATE terms and EUROVOC descriptors. Each annotated document has a CONLL-U Plus format consisting of 14 columns; in addition to the standard 10-column format, four other types of annotations were added. Moreover the repository will be periodically updated as new legislative texts are published. These will be automatically collected and transmitted to the processing and annotation pipeline. The access to the corpus is provided through ELRC infrastructure.
This paper describes RACAI’s word sense alignment system, which participated in the Monolingual Word Sense Alignment shared task organized at GlobaLex 2020 workshop. We discuss the system architecture, some of the challenges that we faced as well as present our results on several of the languages available for the task.
Extracting parallel units (e.g. sentences or phrases) from comparable corpora in order to enrich existing statistical translation models is an avenue that has attracted a lot of research in recent years. There are experiments that convincingly show how parallel sentences extracted from comparable corpora are able to improve statistical machine translation (SMT). Yet, the existing body of research on the subject does not take into account the degree of comparability of the corpus being processed nor the computation time that it takes to extract translational similar pairs from a corpus of a given size. We will show that the performance of a parallel unit extractor crucially depends on the degree of comparability, such that it is more difficult to mine for parallel data in a weakly comparable corpus than a strongly comparable corpus. Most of the research in parallel data mining from comparable corpora focusses on parallel sentence mining, but parallel phrase mining (i.e. sub-sentential fragments) is of equal importance, because it can be more robust in the presence of weakly comparable corpora that usually do not contain whole translated sentences. We will present different approaches to parallel sentence and phrase mining from comparable corpora developed in the ACCURAT project, and we will evaluate them both in terms of absolute measures (e.g., P, R and F1) and with respect to their ability to generate significant improvements of the BLEU scores of a statistical translation system. Comprehensive testing of these algorithms in the context of statistical machine translation will be undertaken in Chap. 6 .
The availability of parallel corpora is limited, especially for under-resourced languages and narrow domains. On the other hand, the number of comparable documents in these areas that are freely available on the Web is continuously increasing. Algorithmic approaches to identify these documents from the Web are needed for the purpose of automatically building comparable corpora for these under-resourced languages and domains. How do we identify these comparable documents? What approaches should be used in collecting these comparable documents from different Web sources? In this chapter, we firstly present a review of previous techniques that have been developed for collecting comparable documents from the Web. Then we describe in detail three new techniques to gather comparable documents from three different types of Web sources: Wikipedia, news articles, and narrow domains.
