A field investigation with fourteen ajwain genotypes was conducted at the College of Horticulture, Bengaluru, India, from October 2019 to April 2020. Eleven characters such as plant height, primary & secondary branches per plant, days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, umbels per plant, Umbellet per umbel, seeds per umbel, test weight, harvest index and seed yield per plant were subjected to correlation and path analysis. Significant positive genotypic and phenotypic association of plant height, primary branches per plant, umbels per plant, umbellate per umbel, seeds per umbel and harvest index with seed yield per plant was exhibited by the crop. Likewise, significant negative correlation was noticed for yield with days taken for 50 per cent flowering and number of days for maturity. Path analysis revealed that primary branches, umbels per plant, Umbellet per umbel, seeds per umbel, test weight and harvest index exhibited positive and direct effects on seed yield per plant whereas secondary branches per plant and days to maturity registered negative direct effect on seed yield per plant. From the analysis it is evident that, these traits should be selected for further crop improvement.
Collection, evaluation and characterization of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) genotypes prevailed in Southern Karnataka was carried out during 2018-19 and 2019-20 of Kharif season.Over 66 turmeric genotypes were studied to elucidate morphometric and genetic diversity.A significant difference among the genotypes for growth, yield and quality traits was recorded for all the traits was observed.Result from the pooled data, the maximum number mother rhizomes, primary fingers and secondary finger was found with genotype 13.65, and 18.96).Along with the highest fresh weight of mother rhizome, primary and secondary finger was also recorded with 302.72 and 210.23 g).Genotype TC-36 registered maximum girth and length of mother rhizomes, primary and secondary finger (14.19, 8.49 and 6.18 cm; 9.99, 9.23 and 7.56 cm).The maximum fresh rhizome yield (49.27 t ha -1 ), curing percentage (25.77)and cured yield (12.70 t ha -1 ) was also registered with TC-36.Overall from this evaluation data the genotypes viz., TC-36, TC-61, TC-60-2, TC-60, TC-51, TC-27, TC-33, TC-37, TC-19 and TC-21 contributing towards yield and perform well in southern region of Karnataka.These genotypes need to be studied in larger field trials for their stability to growth, yield and quality and also in multilocation trail.
Fixed plot survey was carried out to know the extent of Jamun fruit damage caused byMeridarchis scyrodes at different locations. Observations were recorded at fortnight intervals from March to July, 2021 and 2022 Jamun fruiting season at five locations of Gokak taluk and one location of Hukkeri taluk in Belagavi district of Karnataka, India. Survey locations comprised in the study were KRCCH Arabhavi, Dupadal, Ankalagi, Kolavi, Kaitanal and Hidkal Dam with six available varieties (Dupadal, Kolavi local, Kaitanal local and Hidkal Dam local, Konkan Bahadoli and AJG-85). Pooled data depicted the peak incidence of M. scyrodes during II fortnight of June. Highest (58.25%) pest infestation was observed during I fortnight of July in Hidkal Dam local variety, at the same time less (12.50%) pest infestation on fruit was observed in Dupadal variety at Dupadal. Correlation analysis between mean values of per cent fruit infestation due to M. scyrodes with prevailing major weather parameters during fruiting season of 2021 and 2022 were studied in cv. Konkan Bahadoli. The fruit infestation due to M. scyrodes was negatively correlated with temperature, positively correlated with relative humidity in both the years and M. scyrodes had positive and negative correlation with rainfall during 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Pooled data of 2021 and 2022 for fruit damage due to fruit and seed weevil, Curculio c-album revealed that pest incidence starts with an onset of fruit formation and continues till harvesting of fruits. The overall mean fruit damage percentage ranged from 12.3–41.5% with peak incidence during second fortnight of June. Across all the locations highest (50.1%) fruit damage was noticed in Dupadal variety at Dupadal and at the same time less (19.0%) fruit infestation was observed in AJG-85 at Arabhavi. The overall mean of jamun fruit damage due to Conogethes punctiferalis ranged from 0–3.6% with peak incidence during II fortnight of June. Correlation analysis between percentage fruit infestation due to Curculio c-album and Conogethes punctiferalis with prevailing major weather parameters were studied in cv. Konkan Bahadoli. The fruit infestation due to C. c-album and Conogethes punctiferalis was negatively correlated with temperature, positively correlated with relative humidity. C. c-album had positive correlation with rainfall whereas C. Punctiferalis was negatively correlated with rainfall.
Jasmine being cultivated throughout India, its production/ largest area is concentrated in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states. India stands next to Egypt and Morocco in Jasmine Concrete Production with >15 tons per annum. Modern Knowledge has accepted Jasmine as Persian origin, distribution pattern of 72 Jasminum spp. across India suggests, India may be the primary home which has its mention in the 500 BC Tamil literature and 7th to 3rd BCE Ramaynam mythological literature. In Karnataka, a number of Jasminum spp. are being cultivated throughout the state of which Mysuru Mallige, Udupi Mallige and Hadagali Mallige are being unique and are largely concentrated in the respective and adjoining districts. Government of India has registered these three jasmine cultivars with Geographical Indication tag under the Intellectual Property Rights. Though the demand for these GI crops is on increase, the area and production is declining slowly. Here is an attempt to compile the updated knowledge on genetic resources of Jasminum spp. with focus on the heritage crop of Mysuru- ‘Mysuru Mallige’.
Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius) (Pentatomidae: Asopinae) was reported for the first time as predator of adult and immature pumpkin beetle, Aulacophora indica (Gmelin, 1790) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), feeding on bitter gourd.Detailed description of P. bioculatus is provided along with field data and photographs, showing predation behavior.Distribution of P. bioculatus has also been given in India and elsewhere.
Potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella Zeller has become one of the most serious insect pests of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) around the world, including in India. Field studies were conducted against PTM in Rabi seasons during 2019-20 in four and two taluks of Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts of Karnataka, respectively to understand the extent of foliage damage and leaf mines. Mean per cent infestation of PTM and number of mined leaves per plant during Rabi season of survey were highest with 4.47% and 8.31 mined leaves in Kolar district and it was least in Chikkaballpur district (2.51% and 2.95), respectively. Number of mines per plant was observed lowest (5.09) in Kolar district compared to Chikkaballapur district with 5.24 mines per plant. The above damage parameters like per cent PTM infestation and number of mined leaves per plant were not differed significantly whereas number of mines per plant was significantly different in Chikkaballapur district. On the other hand, all the damage parameters were significantly differed in Kolar districts during the survey in Rabi season 2019-20. In recent years, the temperature has been steadily rising due to climate change, and it is predicted that the occurrence of the PTM will continue to increase in the future. Therefore, the development of control technologies and intensive monitoring will be necessary for stable potato production as well as potato post-harvest.
In India, Maharashtra and Gujarat states supply tomatoes thoughout much of the year. Among the biotic stresses, tomato leaf curl virus diseases (ToLCD) transmitted by whitefly [Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)] are the most destructive and are known to cause complete crop loss under early infection conditions. Prevalence of an efficient vector in a region increases the impact of the disease. B. tabaci is a 'cryptic species' complex with varied vector efficiency. Whitefly samples (19 samples) were collected from field grown tomato crops from major tomato growing regions in Pune (Otur, Kusur, Pimpalwandi, Yedgaon and Manjarwadi) and Ahmednagar (Sakur) districts of Maharashtra, India. The samples were subjected to PCR amplification of their partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit one (mtCO1) genes by using specific primers and the amplicons were sequenced for diversity analysis. The Global Bemisia data set containing 544 unique B. tabaci mtCO1 mitotypes, with out-group sequences, was used as master reference data set. Bayesian analysis was applied to the aligned sample and reference sequences and showed that 84% of the sample whiteflies were of the Middle East Asia minor1 (MEAM1) haplotype while the remaining 16% were the Asia I haplotype. The exotic MEAM1 type is reported to have efficient begomovirus vectoring ability (with high fecundity and a short life cycle) and appears to be displacing the relatively less efficient native (Asia I) population in this region. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the globally invasive MEAM1 type in the major tomato growing regions of Maharashtra. The predominance of the MEAM1 whiteflies is likely to have a major influence on the incidence and spread of ToLCD in the region.
The Indian horticulture is characterised by dominance of vegetables, fruits and plantation crops and rest is shared by spices, flowers, medicinal and aromatic crops. Green revolution has lead to a significant increase in the Indian agriculture with four fold increase in cereals production, six times in milk, nine times in fish and a laudable 10 folds in horticulture segment. Research on these fungi has focused predominantly on aspects related to population regulation and management of arthropod pests. There are few innate features of the entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) which made their commercial exploitation progression on a slower tract. Science has proved beyond doubt that the EPFs are environmentally safe due to high host specificity; have natural capability to cause epizootics due to their persistent presence in soil; compatible with all/most tactics of pest management; and need lower development costs than chemical agents.
Gerbera is an important cut flower crop popular throughout the world. In summer months of 2016, gerberas grown in polyhouses of RHREC, GKVK, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India showed heavy infestation of thrips and displayed symptoms of viral infections. Infected plants displayed irregular chlorotic or necrotic spots or blotches, necrosis of veins, bronzing, crinkling and deformations of leaves; necrotic streaks on flower stalks; chlorosis or necrosis of flower petals; tip necrosis or death of young plants. The virus was identified as groundnut bud necrosis virus based on DAC-ELISA, RT-PCR and transmission studies, and it was characterized by cloning and sequencing of N gene and 3′ UTRs. Thrips associated was identified as Scirtothrips dorsalis and the virus was detected in individual thrips using DAC-ELISA. The virus could be efficiently transmitted to cowpea variety C-152 both by mechanical sap inoculation and vector transmission and to tulsi plants by vector transmission. Sequence of S-RNA segment of the virus from two independent gerbera samples was submitted under the accession numbers KX832986.1 and KX832987.1. The two isolates showed per cent identities of 97.1 and 98.5 at N gene and at 3′ UTRs, respectively, with each other and 92.9–99.1% at N gene with other GBNV isolates. Phylogenetically they clustered along with other GBNV isolates reported from different hosts and locations within the major clade of watermelon silver mottle virus serogroup. Differential response was observed in gerbera varieties with respect to incidence of GBNV disease (19.6–80.6%) and thrips (24.6–54.0 thrips/leaf) with the least incidence in the varieties Esmara and Orinaco.
Potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella Zeller originated in Latin America and co-evolved with its host plant potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). It has become one of the most serious insect pests around the world, including in India. Laboratory studies were conducted against PTM for the pest build-up; % tuber dried and rot and extent of tuber tunneling. The mean% infestation of PTM using different storage materials after 90 days of storage was witnessed highest (56.92%) in wooden bins and it was least in cartoon box stored tubers (48.59%), while among different storage methods, it was recorded highest with 61.88% in plastic bin stored tubers and was lowest in low temperature stored tubers (5.45%).% tubers dried after 90 days of storage period was maximum in tubers inserted with agave leaf bits (40%) and it was minimum in nylon mesh bags (5%) among different storage materials. The same was resulted with no tubers dried in both low temperature and pit stored tubers among different storage methods and it was highest in heap method with paddy straw cover (10%). A maximum of 85.00% tuber rot was recorded in tubers inserted with agave leaf bits and a minimum of 10.00% in tubers stored in wooden bins among the storage materials. Among different storage methods, percent tuber rot ranged from 10.00 to 75.00% in tubers storage in low temperature and heap method, respectively. Extent of tuber tunneling among storage materials ranged from 22.22% (40 mesh nylon bags stored tubers) to cent percent (tubers stored in wooden bins and bamboo bins). The same was witnessed with a minimum of 0.33% in low temperature storage method in polythene bags and a maximum of 73.33% in plastic bin stored tubers. Therefore, the development of control technologies and intensive monitoring is necessary in future days to come, for stable potato production as well as potato post-harvest.
Among seven insecticides evaluated azadirachtin 10000 ppm (1 ml/ l) was found to be the most effective against seed weevil Curculio c-album F., followed by deltamethrin 2.8EC (1.0 ml/ l) and malathion 50EC (2.0 ml/l). The least effective was spinosad 45SC (0.3 ml/ l) followed by cyantraniliprole 10.26OD (1.8 ml/ l). Three rounds of sprays (new flush, pre bloom and post bloom) of insecticides gave better protection when compared to single/ two sprays. Maximum healthy fruit yield (49.81 kg/ tree) was obtained with azadirachtin.
The South American leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a serious pest of tomato causing substantial annual economic losses at a global scale. Our study comprised choice and no‐choice bioassays, aimed at understanding the preference of this oligophagous pest for a few selected solanaceous hosts (tomato, potato, eggplant, ashwagandha, black nightshade, wild tomato, tobacco, and datura), and the identification of the volatile cues that influence its host selection process. In choice assays, T. absoluta females preferred tomato for oviposition over all the other plants, whereas ashwagandha, tobacco, and datura were the least preferred; on datura zero eggs were laid. A similar trend was observed in the subsequent number of larval mines formed. The moth’s preference for host plants of the genus Solanum was quite evident in both the choice and no‐choice assays. Tomato plant volatiles were found to be more attractive to the female moths in single‐ and dual‐choice olfactometer assays. In electroantennographic bioassays, the mean depolarization was significant for tomato, potato, ashwagandha, and eggplant compared to empty air and honey. In total 76 volatile compounds were identified in the GC‐MS analysis across the eight previously selected host–plant headspace samples. Principal component analysis revealed that 1‐fluorododecane and p ‐quinone mainly contributed to the observed variation among the host plant volatiles. Of all the host plants, tomato, wild tomato, and tobacco were found to share similarities with respect to volatile cues, whereas ashwagandha, eggplant, and datura were found to be closely related. The other two hosts, potato and black nightshade, had fewer volatiles in common. Volatile cues, namely p ‐quinone, 2‐carene, δ‐curcumene, and 1,2‐diethylbenzene, in tomato could serve as oviposition stimulants to T. absoluta , whereas the presence of 1‐fluorododecane in host plants such as datura, eggplant, ashwagandha, and black nightshade, might have deterred T. absoluta from ovipositing. 1‐Fluorododecane was found to be completely absent in tomato.

It is cultivated for its beautiful cut flowers, cut foliage and as a potted plant. In 2016, anthurium grown in greenhouses on the RHREC campus, GKVK Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, showed various types of disease symptoms with an initial incidence of approximately 25%. In 2018, the disease incidence had increased to 80% along with heavy infestations of thrips. Plants showed chlorotic and necrotic lesions on spathes (Fig. 1) and leaves (Fig. 2), and malformation of spathes and necrotic streaks on flower stalks. These symptoms were observed on anthurium cvs. Acropolish, Cheers, Fire, Tropical and Xavia. The symptoms resembled those caused by Tomato spotted wilt virus on anthurium reported from Hawaii (Uchida et al., 4). Figure 1Open in figure viewerPowerPoint Figure 2Open in figure viewerPowerPoint Twenty samples comprising either leaves or spathe were collected randomly from symptomatic plants and tested along with buffer and healthy plant controls for the presence of serogroup IV tospoviruses using polyclonal antibodies raised against Groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV) (reported to detect all serogroup IV orthotospoviruses (Mandal & Jain, 2)) by DAC-ELISA. ELISA results were positive for all symptomatic plants with mean absorbance values (A405) ranging from 0.65 to 1.4 compared to 0.12 in the healthy plant control. To confirm the presence of an orthotospovirus species, total RNA was extracted from symptomatic and healthy leaf samples using the SpectrumTM Plant Total RNA Kit (Sigma-Aldrich USA) and subjected to RT-PCR analysis. The serogroup IV orthotospovirus group-specific reverse primer (5'-AGAGCAATCGAGGCGCTAATAA-3') and individual species-specific forward primers designed using sequence analysis (BLAST or CLUSTAL O (1.2.4) and Oligo Analyzer (1.0.2) were used for RT-PCR. An amplicon of the expected size (898 bp) was obtained with the GBNV-specific forward primer (5'-TTACAATTCCAGCGAAGGAC-3') from all symptomatic plants and but not from healthy samples (Fig. 3). The product was cloned and sequenced and the sequence deposited in GenBank (Accession No. MF989441). Analysis of the obtained sequence revealed that it had 89.18-98.07% nucleotide and 87.32-98.91% amino acid identity with the N gene of GBNV isolates deposited in GenBank from different crops and regions. The highest identity was observed with a GBNV tomato isolate from Coimbatore (AY472081). Phylogenetic analysis by the neighbour-joining method using MEGA 7 software indicated that it grouped with other GBNV isolates (Fig. 4). Figure 3Open in figure viewerPowerPoint Figure 4Open in figure viewerPowerPoint The occurrence of members of the genus Orthotospovirus, such as Tomato spotted wilt virus and Impatiens necrotic spot virus, which are transmitted by several species of thrips, on anthurium has been reported from different parts of the world (Uchida et al., 4, Ghotbi & Shahraeen, 1). In India, GBNV is the most widely distributed member of the genus Orthotospovirus and infects a wide variety of plant species (Mandal et al., 3). However, to the best of our knowledge, anthurium is a new host for GBNV, not only in India but also worldwide. The severity of symptoms observed on anthurium suggests that, GBNV is an important and emerging virus on this ornamental plant with the potential to cause economic damage and therefore merits attention. Western Ghats of India is the centre for biological diversity many plant species including Garcinia indica. Biologically important compound (-) - Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a popular anti-obesity compound extracted from the fruits of Garcinia indica. The present study was conducted to understand the extent of variation for the content of –(-)HCA in the fruits of Garcinia indica ecotypes prevailing in Western Ghats of Karnataka. The autoclave assisted extraction and the spectrophotometric analysis of 120 ecotypes of G. indica revealed significant variation in HCA content in the fruits. The average per cent HCA content on dry weight basis in fruits of G. indica was 17.90. The average mean HCA content of G. indica ecotypes in Uttara Kannada region (regarded as Uttara Kannada population) was highest (20.60%). compared to other ecotypes. The results indicated that there is a good genetic plasticity for HCA content among the ecotypes of G. indica prevailing in Western Ghats of Karnataka and there exists ample opportunity to exercise selection for the genotypes with higher –(-)HCA content.
An experiment was conducted for three consecutive years from 2016 to 2018 during Rabi season at Horticulture Research and Extension Center, Hassan, Karnataka. A study was conducted by using Complete Block Design with four replications under storage. For PTM management studies, Kufri Jyoti tubers were planted at 60 cm X 20 cm spacing with soil application of recommended dose of fertilizers (75:75:100 kg NPK/ha) and FYM (25 t/ha) during Kharif season as per package of practices. After harvesting of Kharif season crop, tubers were dipped with neem oil and Bt formulations at different concentrations were evaluated. The per cent incidence of tuber damage due to PTM was documented at monthly intervals for four months under room temperature conditions. The pooled data of three years indicated that, out of five treatments Bt formulation @ 2 per cent concentration noticed lowest per cent mean incidence of tuber damage of 24.05 followed by Bt formulation @ 1 per cent concentration was revealed 29.30 per cent mean incidence of tuber damage. Hence, dip treatment of tubers with Bt formulation @ 2 per cent was found to be effective for post harvest management through biological control of potato tuber moth damage under storage in Southern Dry Zone of Karnataka in India.
An experiment was conducted with fourteen ajwain genotypes at the Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, College of Horticulture, GKVK, Bengaluru, from October 2019 to April 2020 to document insect pest spectrum infesting ajwain. Out of the four insect pests recorded to invade ajwain, three are new pest records on ajwain except aphids. Only the aphid could differentiate the ajwain genotypes and rest three failed to do so due low pest pressure. Irrespective of genotypes, the mean pest population was 2.23 defoliators per plant (Thysanoplusia orichalcea and Archips sp. together), 4.98 per cent stem fly infestation which caused 1.73 per cent plant mortality per 3.8 m2 plot and 61.85 aphids per 5 cm apical shoot. Aphid population was significantly least on genotype, Lam Sel-1 (43.37) and AA-2 (51.43) and was maximum on DAC-8 (71.90) which indicates scope for exploring the variability for aphid in crop improvement programme.
