Abstract Public agricultural interventions in developing countries have long sought to foster youth entrepreneurship. Yet, expected outcomes such as income generation, poverty reduction, and food security remain limited, highlighting persistent challenges of sustainability. This study examines the economic viability of youth-led agribusinesses and identifies key determinants to pinpoint more effective policies for livelihood improvement and agricultural growth. Conducted in the Republic of Benin, the survey collected three years of data from randomly selected youth agribusinesses. Quantitative methods were applied to construct indicators of economic viability assessment and to analyze determinants through logit regression. Findings reveal that while most youths engage in agricultural basic production, only a minority succeed in establishing economically viable enterprises. Technical support and financial assistance are scarce, and current subsidy mechanisms often produce adverse effects. Market targeting and profitability emerge as critical drivers of long-term economic success, while many of the current forms of subsidies have a negative impact. Policy implications suggest prioritizing entrepreneurial training focused on market dynamics and profitability, alongside innovative financing mechanisms. Strengthening networking opportunities for experience and innovation sharing, and partnerships is also essential to enhance agribusiness sustainability and contribute to sectoral growth.
This study examines farmers' knowledge and perceptions of damage caused by fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda), reports their estimated production losses in southern Benin between 2020 and 2022, and investigates the factors that influenced pest management decisions. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to interview 242 farmers across two agroecological zones of southern Benin from September to December 2023. About 93 % of farmers had broad knowledge of FAW, and 95 % believed they had been affected by infestations and considered the pest dangerous. However, 41 % misinterpreted the timing of FAW attacks, believing that the insect emerged and caused damage only at the mature stage of maize. As a result, synthetic insecticides were frequently applied after significant damage had already occurred. Infestation levels varied across zones: farmers in the Guinean zone reported relatively low infestation (20 %), while those in the Sudano-Guinean zone reported higher levels (40 %), especially in 2021. Yield losses were estimated at 20-40 % during this period. In terms of management, 73 % of farmers relied on synthetic insecticides, 2.5 % adopted cultural practices, 11.6 % used no control methods, and only 1.2 % applied botanical extracts. Further analysis revealed that the choice of FAW control measures was significantly influenced by years of maize farming experience (P < 0.002), financial means (P < 0.001), and to a lesser extent, perceptions of control method effectiveness (P < 0.068). These findings showed that although farmers are aware of FAW, misperceptions about its biology and timing of insecticide application remain problematic. To reduce yield losses, extension programs should prioritize training on the biology of FAW, timing of chemical applications, and consider the aforementioned factors when promoting management practices for FAW control in Benin and similar agroecological contexts.
Access to adequate and nutritious food is accepted as a human right worldwide. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kasai Oriental province is one of the most vulnerable provinces in the country in terms of food insecurity. However, its current depth of food insecurity and the root factors have not been studied. Against this background, this study used cross-sectional data from 318 households to analyze the magnitude and socioeconomic drivers of food insecurity among rural households in the province. We developed two food security indicators: the food consumption score (FCS) and household food insecurity access scale (HFIAS), and applied the ordinary least square (OLS) and the negative binomial model for the analysis. Our findings show that households rely mainly on vegetables to meet their food need, consume more energy, and have limited access to protein, vitamin, and fat-rich foods. All the surveyed households were deficient in food quantity, while 75 % were deficient in quality. The study noted that the severity of food insecurity is zone-specific and more pronounced in the Kabeya Kamwanga territory than in others. Importantly, the poverty and education levels among households associated with large household sizes were the significant determinants of food insecurity in the area. These results strongly demonstrate the need for agrifood interventions that foster education, enable efficient land use, and target poor households in the province.
Despite the potential of agriculture to reduce unemployment in sub-Saharan Africa, research on agricultural entrepreneurship is scarce, especially regarding the entrepreneurs' motivations. The aim of this research is to examine the intensity of necessity and opportunity motivations among agricultural entrepreneurs and the influence of socioeconomic characteristics, personality, and environmental factors. Hence, the study reports a survey of 819 agricultural entrepreneurs in Benin and uses multinomial logistic regressions. Most agricultural entrepreneurs are moderately necessity-driven (76%); the remainder includes highly necessity-driven entrepreneurs (4%), moderately opportunity-driven entrepreneurs (6%), and highly opportunity-driven entrepreneurs (14%). Those displaying higher intensity of necessity motivations can be at any education level, are former employees, are less proactive, less optimistic, and operate in the services sector. In contrast, highly opportunity-driven entrepreneurs are likely to have received a university education and agricultural professional training, operate in the services sector, and have better access to finance and technologies. This study advances the push-pull theory by revealing a richer set of entrepreneurial motivations beyond the simplistic dichotomic view. Hence, policymakers could devise entrepreneurship strategies and programs that consider the diverse motivations of entrepreneurs and the influencing factors to move them toward increased opportunity entrepreneurship.
Background & rationale:Malaria is a major health problem in Benin where it is the main cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly among children under 5 and pregnant women. Although the vast majority of malaria cases occurs in rural and agricultural areas and are often associated with development projects, very few interventions target the agro-ecosystem. In Benin, irrigated rice growing is expanding to meet the increasing demand of the population. However, continuous flooding and tillage systems induce the development and proliferation of malaria and other diseases vectors. Intermittent flooding of rice plots and minimal tillage can reduce significantly the proliferation of mosquitoes including Anopheles in rice fields. However, the dissemination and implementation of these agricultural practices require community-wide action for greater effectiveness. As part of strengthening the capacity of farming communities in the fight against malaria vectors, the "Farmer Field School" appears to be an innovative approach. This learning by doing method promotes interactions between groups of producers to disseminate proven technologies. This study aims to disseminate among rice producers the agricultural practices of intermittent flooding and minimal tillage, likely to reduce the proliferation of malaria vectors in the rice fields.Materials & methods:This study was carried out in the rice-growing perimeter of Malanville, Benin (11° 52' 5" North, 3° 22' 59" East) which covers an area of 516 hectares. Farmer Field Schools were set up after a basic survey at producer level. This survey was carried out through in-depth interview, focus group discussions and direct field observation with producers. Focus groups discussions and interviews made it possible to understand the perception of rice farmers on the link between rice production and the transmission of malaria. In order to disseminate new agricultural practices such as intermittent flooding and minimal tillage among producers, twelve plots have been set up. Farmer Field Schools were monitored weekly with rice producers accompanied by a facilitator and a medical entomologist (learning facilitator or moderator) helping the farmers with the collection and identification of mosquito larvae. According to the different stages of rice development (transplanting, tillering, maturation), the mosquito larvae were collected in the test and control plots from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the dipping method. Then the water in the test compartments (intermittent flooding) was emptied. A cycle of 7 days of flooding and 2 days of drying was carried out for intermittent flooding. Mosquito larvae were identified morphologically using the identification key and Anopheles genus larvae were isolated in plastic cups. The impacts of intermittent flooding and minimum tillage in reducing breeding sites and larval densities were established by determining and comparing the larval densities of mosquitoes and of Anopheles between the test and control plots.Results:Direct observations in the field allowed to identify three tillage systems, which include the use of tiller (28%), plow (66%) and hoe (6%) on the rice field. Continuous flooding was the only irrigation system used by farmers. The water used for irrigation comes either from boreholes installed individually or from the Niger River. The volume of water used varies with the seasons, the size of the farms and the variety of rice grown. Farmers observe that the nuisance of mosquitoes increases during the rice production period with an outbreak of malaria cases, especially among children, which leads to crowds in health centers. The preventive measures against malaria among farmers are the use of impregnated mosquito nets distributed free of charge by the national program against malaria, and of insecticide bombs or spirals. Considering the development stages of the rice, the larval densities varied according to the treatments. Overall, minimal tillage applied to intermittent flooding significantly reduced the density of mosquito larvae of all species. The reduction rates were 10.5, 5.4 and 2.5 during transplanting, tillering and maturation, respectively. Considering only the Anopheles larvae, minimal tillage applied to intermittent flooding reduced their density by 16, 5.5 and 4 respectively during transplanting, tillering and maturation.Discussion/conclusion:The rice-growing area of Malanville has many favorable conditions for rice production, including the presence of water supply sources such as the Niger River located near the rice field and numerous boreholes. The availability of water pockets for mosquito breeding during irrigation appeared to contribute to the extension of malaria transmission. The present study showed that the intermittent flooding coupled with minimal tillage could reduce the proliferation of malaria vectors. The results suggested that with technical support to farmers through the "Farmer Field School", the malaria incidence could be reduced in the farming community.
The agribusiness sector development is often portrayed as an essential component of economic development. Though Benin is a country with inestimable agricultural potential, the agribusiness sector appears unappealing to the local youths. Prior investigations diagnosed the impeding factors as a paucity of financial resource and a dearth of land and technical knowledge. This article departs from past studies by considering the importance of informal institutions for youth participation in the agribusiness sector. Exploring a rich data set of 478 youths aged 15 to 35, collected in Southern Benin based on the stratified random sampling technique, the article uses propensity score matching to address selection bias and logistic regression on the matched sample to link informal institutions to youth participation in agribusiness. Results highlight that agribusiness-unfriendly informal institutions discourage youth participation in the agribusiness sector. Though easing access to finance is crucial for the youths to initiate agribusiness activities, findings make a case for long-term policies that aim to increase the societal levels of trust and desirability for the agribusiness sector.
This research examined how key entrepreneurial orientation (EO) dimensions influence business performance of young women agribusiness owners, as well as the moderating effects of social and business environments on these relationships. Data were collected from a sample of 365 young women agri-food processing business owners in Benin. Moderated multiple regression methods were used to test multiple hypotheses including the interaction effects of social and business environments. The three EO dimensions identified in the context of young women agribusiness owners, namely Innovative EO, Pro-active EO and Risk-taking EO, positively influence business performance. The joint effect of EO and social environment on business performance was not significant. In contrast, the business environment negatively moderates the relationship between EO and business performance. Furthermore, there is a three-way interaction between EO, social and business environments, such that these young women entrepreneurs achieve low level of performance when adopting EO in social and business environments with high levels of barriers. The training of potential young women agribusiness owners on the appropriate EO, and the establishment of an innovation platform to jointly draft and implement action plans could enhance the performance of young women agribusiness owners. This study provides a critical understanding of what EO dimensions to stimulate for increased economic success of young women agribusiness owners. It also highlights the specific conditions for the effectiveness of EO on business performance of these entrepreneurs in developing contexts such as Benin.
In sub-Saharan Africa, where the professional insertion of graduates remains a major challenge, entrepreneurship represents an alternative to youth unemployment. This study investigates the predictors of agribusiness entrepreneurial intentions amongst undergraduate agricultural students in the Republic of Benin. A sample of 351 final year agricultural students was selected from universities. The data were collected through structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a binary logistic regression. The findings showed that 44.16% of respondents were willing to start their own agribusiness venture after graduation with a preference for agro-processing enterprises (35.48%) and crop production enterprises (26.45%). The significant factors that influence agricultural students' entrepreneurial intention in agribusiness were age, their major field of study, type of university attended, previous experience in agribusiness, a role model as a friend, and perception of agribusiness environment. The study suggests the establishment of clubs for agribusiness entrepreneurship in agricultural faculties and universities; showcasing of young entrepreneurs in agribusiness through national competitions, and events, such as "Agri-Enterprise Week" at universities, inviting young agribusiness entrepreneurs to share their experiences with the students in the next generation as guests lecturer; and the creation by the government of a conducive agribusiness environment for youth graduates. In the light of these insights, several paths for future research emerge.
This paper provides evidence on the effect of informal institutions on youth participation in agribusiness in Southern Benin. The paper exploits the richness of microdata of 576 youngs and uses the propensity score matching technique to address issues related to selection bias. Findings suggest that informal institutions are crucial to youth participation in agribusiness. The low level of trust, the low societal desirability for agribusiness, and the lack of self-confidence typical of hierarchical society hamper the youth to harness untapped opportunities available in the agribusiness. In addition, we also found that the lack of land and technical knowledge hold back youngs to participate in agribusiness. Drawing on these findings, we recommend policymakers initiate institutional reforms that are agribusiness-friendly. On top of that, it is crucial to be assured that the youth have access to land and technical capacity to venture into agribusiness activities.
Although global assessments of the initial impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have focused on income, jobs, and health conditions, this study constitutes one of the first studies that assessed the impact of COVID-19 on food security in DRC and established the short-term implications of the COVID-19 outbreak on rural households' food security in DRC. In addition, the study recommendations contributed to shaping government interventions toward the pandemic in the Country. The study used data from four western provinces of the country on 1339 households. Our results show that 80 % of households experienced an increase in food prices, 61 % a noticeable decrease in the availability of food, and 54 % a decrease in their dietary diversity. Due to changes in food availability, dietary diversity, and food accessibility imposed by the COVID-19 outbreak, >70 % of households experienced either a decrease in the consumption of meat, milk, fish, and cereals or an increase in their consumption of traditional vegetables. In addition, COVID-19 significantly affected food security dimensions in larger households, households with a greater number of members aged 35 years and above, households headed by women, households where members participate in associations or cooperatives, households that depend on crop sales as the major source of income, and in poorer households. These findings highlight the significant implications of the COVID-19 outbreak on household food security in western DRC and underscore the need for emergency interventions to strengthen the resilience of rural people and accelerate their recovery and other long-term measures toward sustainable and inclusive development.
Entrepreneurship is a credible option for countries that aim to solve the problem of youth employability. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of incubators through their services on the success of innovative agribusinesses founded by youths in Cameroon. We found that incubators through services (infrastructure, training and coaching, advice and assistance, and networking) impact, albeit at a low level, the development (management, strategic alliances, development of innovations) and growth (job and wealth) of youth- founded agribusinesses.
The youth unemployment situation is an essential component of the current agricultural policy agenda of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Deep-rooted debates on finding a lasting solution to this problem using agriculture have been targeted as one of the panaceas. Using data from 207 systematically selected rice-producing households, this study employed the Propensity Score Matching method (PSM) and the Inverse Probability Weighted Regression Adjustment method (IPWRA) to examine the effect of intensive youth participation in agriculture on productivity and household revenue in Nigeria. We found that the key factors influencing the decisions of youth to participate in agriculture intensively include the number of years of farming experience, access to credit, membership in social groups, income, and land access. The PSM results indicate that rice productivity could increase by 1088.78 kg/ha if youth decide to intensively participate in agriculture. The IPWRA results show a positive and significant impact of intensive youth participation in agriculture on productivity and revenue. Therefore, our results suggest that efforts by the government and stakeholders towards encouraging flexible accessibility to credit (low-interest and easy repayment) and land without collateral to young people could enhance their participation in intensive agriculture and could subsequently boost productivity and household revenue.
The increasing rate of youth unemployment in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, remains among the challenges to social and economic stability. Accordingly, the Nigerian government implemented several interventions, including the Youth-in-Agribusiness (YIA) program to reduce youth unemployment. However, the effect of these programs on gainful employment creation is yet to be documented. Therefore, this study examined the impact of the YIA program on creating gainful employment among the youth. Multistage random sampling was used to obtain cross-sectional data from 668 youth in Southwestern Nigeria. Propensity score matching and endogenous switching probit techniques were used for the estimations. Results indicated that variables such as educational attainment, access to training, non-agricultural activity, membership in a youth organization, access to credit, productive resources, and youth location were significant and positively influenced youth decision to participate in the YIA program. Furthermore, participation in the YIA program has a significant positive impact on gainful employment among the youth. Therefore, the study recommends that strengthening social capital such as youth organization, credit scheme (financed by private and government), vocational training, and educational system is vital in enhancing participation in the YIA program and eventually gainful employment of youth.
Termites are widely used as a food resource, particularly in Africa and Asia. Markets for insects as food are also expanding worldwide. To inform the development of insect-based foods, we analysed selected minerals (Fe-Mn-Zn-Cu-Mg) in wild-harvested and commercially available termites. Mineral values were compared to selected commercially available insects. Alate termites, of the genera Macrotermes and Odontotermes , showed remarkably high manganese (Mn) content (292–515 mg/100 gdw), roughly 50–100 times the concentrations detected in other insects. Other mineral elements occur at moderate concentrations in all insects examined. On further examination, the Mn is located primarily in the abdomens of the Macrotermes subhyalinus ; with scanning electron microscopy revealing small spherical structures highly enriched for Mn. We identify the fungus comb, of Macrotermes subhyanus , as a potential biological source of the high Mn concentrations. Consuming even small quantities of termite alates could exceed current upper recommended intakes for Mn in both adults and children. Given the widespread use of termites as food, a better understanding the sources, distribution and bio-availability of these high Mn concentrations in termite alates is needed.
Background The environmental pathogen, Mycobacterium ulcerans (MU) can infect both humans and animals and cause Buruli ulcer (BU) disease. However, its mode(s) of transmission from the colonized environment to human/animal hosts remain unclear. In Australia, MU can infect both wildlife and domestic mammals. Till date, BU-like lesions have only been reported in wildlife in Africa. This warrants a thorough assessment of possible MU in domestic animals in Africa. Here, we screened roaming domesticated animals that share the human microhabitat in two different BU endemic sites, Sedje-Denou in Benin and Akonolinga in Cameroon, for MU lesions. Methodology/Principal findings We screened roaming mammals and birds across 3 endemic villages of Sedje-Denou in Southern Benin and 6 endemic villages of Akonolinga in Cameroon. After approval from relevant authorities, specimens (wound swabs and tissue fragments) were collected from animals with open or active lesion and systematically screened to detect the presence of MU though the diagnostic DNA targets IS2404, IS2606 and KR-B. Out of 397 animals surveyed in Akonolinga, 44 (11.08%) carried skin lesions and all were negative for MU DNA. For Sedje-Denou, only 25 (6.93%) out of 361 animals surveyed carried external skin lesions of which 2 (8%) were positive for MU DNA targets. These MU infected lesions were found in two different villages on a goat (abdominal part) and on a dog (nape area of the neck). Source-tracking of MU isolates within infected animal lesions was performed using VNTR genotyping and further confirmed with sequencing. One MU VNTR genotype (Z) was successfully typed from the goat lesion. The evolutionary history inferred from sequenced data revealed a clustering of animal MU isolates within isolates from human lesions. Conclusion/Significance This study describes the first report of two MU infected lesions in domestic animals in Africa. Their DNA sequence analyses show close relationship to isolates from human cases. It suggests that MU infection should be suspected in domestic hosts and these could play a role in transmission. The findings further support the hypothesis that MU is a ubiquitous environmental pathogen found in endemic areas, and probably involved in a multiple transmission pathway.
Background Irrigation systems have been identified as one of the factors promoting malaria disease around agricultural farms in sub-Saharan Africa. However, if improved water management strategy is adopted during rice cultivation, it may help to reduce malaria cases among human population living around rice fields. This study aimed to assess the impact of the different irrigation practices on malaria transmission, as well as to evaluate the water management system that will best mitigate malaria transmission in Malanville, Benin. Methods Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) study was conducted on 104 households staying on and around the rice fields in Malanville. The study focused on the frequency of mosquito bites and preventive measures against malaria as well as soil preparation and rice planting methods. Mosquito larvae density was assessed in different water management system: continuous flooding (CF) or intermittent flooding (IF), deep tillage (DT) or minimal tillage (MT) and normal levelling (NL) or abnormal levelling (AL) in an experimental hut set-up. Larvae were collected using dipping methods and their density was determined. Results Three tillage systems, which include the use of tiller, plow and hoe, were identified on the rice field. Continuous flooding was the only irrigation system used by farmers. Retrospective data from Malanville Health Centre revealed higher malaria cases during rice production season, which was also confirmed by field participants. The density of Anopheles larvae was reduced by 80.8%, 30.8% and 40.7% (P = 0.000) during transplanting, tillering and maturation periods, respectively with intermittent flooding compared to continuous flooding. In addition, a clear reduction of larva density was observed with both intermittent flooding systems applied to minimal tillage (MT + IF + NL) and intermittent flooding applied to deep tillage (DT + IF + AL), showing that intermittent flooding could reduce the abundance of malaria vector in rice fields. Conclusion Recommending intermittent flooding technology for rice cultivation may not only be useful for water management but could also be an intentional strategy to control mosquitoes vector-borne diseases around rice farms.
Lambda-cyhalothrin (λ-cyhalothrin) is the most commonly used pyrethroid insecticide for vegetable farming in Benin. This insecticide is misused and overused by farmers, and hence may pose health hazards to consumers. We monitored λ-cyhalothrin residues in lettuce and cabbage from farms at the market gates in Cotonou and Parakou using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis techniques. These residues were also monitored on samples directly from farms (on-farm sampling) for 14 days post-treatment. Potential factors such as photolysis and hydrolysis involved in λ-cyhalothrin degradation were also screened. Results revealed that the level of λ-cyhalothrin residue concentrations in lettuce from Houeyiho decreased from 4.2 mg/kg on Day 1 to about 0.2 mg/kg on Day 7. On Day 9, analyzed lettuces were all λ-cyhalothrin free. In contrast, even 14 days after treatment of cabbage from Bawera (Parakou), we still recorded the presence of λ-cyhalothrin residues in analyzed samples. For samples from market gates, λ-cyhalothrin residues were found in lettuce from two markets out of the nine surveyed in Cotonou. Interestingly, none of these contaminated samples had residues above the maximum residue limit for lettuce (MRL = 0.5 mg/kg). Similarly, in Parakou, samples from all five surveyed vegetable markets were contaminated with λ-cyhalothrin residues at concentrations below the MRL for cabbage (MRL = 0.2 mg/kg). We conclude that λ-cyhalothrin residues in lettuce and cabbage from farms and markets in Parakou and Cotonou are within the MRL, and hence are relatively safe for consumption.
Background and objectives: Long lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) and Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) are used to control malaria vectors in Benin. It is known that the main threat to effective malaria vector control is the selection of insecticide resistance in field Anopheles population. This study aimed to generate baseline data on the mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance in An. gambiae s.l. population from Kpome. This information is useful for a proper evaluation of new formulations of vector control tools expected to be deployed in resistance management. Methods: Indoor-resting Anopheles mosquitoes were collected using electric aspirators. The insecticide susceptibility level of F1 adult offspring of An. gambiae s.l. was assessed using the WHO standardprotocol. Genotyping of insecticide resistant alleles and Plasmodium detections were carried out using TaqMan assays. Results: WHO susceptibility test showed that An. gambiae s.l. from Kpome is highly resistant to DDT and permethrin. Moderate resistance level was recorded with deltamethrin and dieldrin, whereas full susceptibility was observed with bendiocarb and malathion. Molecular analysis of Plasmodium infections showed an infection rate of 13.2 % for An. gambiae s.l. Both L1014F and L1014S kdr mutations were found in this population of An. gambiae s.l. with high distribution of the L1014F resistant allele. Rdl and GSTe2 mutations were also detected in this population. The allelic frequencies of 22% and 37.5% were recorded for Rdl mutation (A296S) in An. coluzzii and An. gambiae s.s. respectively. In these same species, the allelic frequencies of GSTe2 mutation (L119S) were 26.47% and 7.14% respectively. Interpretation and conclusion: The observed co-occurrence of L1014F, L1014S, A296S and L119S mutations in both An. coluzzii and An. gambiae s.s. is worrisome. The presence of L1014S allele in this mosquito population suggested the spreading of this gene across Benin. The operational impact of these resistance genes on malaria control strategies needs further exploration in other malaria endemic areas.
Background: Insecticides resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes limits Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) used for malaria control in Africa, especially Benin. This study aimed to evaluate the bio-efficacy of current LLINs in an area where An. funestus s.l. and An. gambiae have developed multi-resistance to insecticides, and to assess in experimental huts the performance of a mixed combination of pyrethroids and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) treated nets on these resistant mosquitoes. Methods: The study was conducted at Kpomè, Southern Benin. The bio-efficacy of LLINs against An. funestus and An. gambiae was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) cone and tunnel tests. A released/recapture experiment following WHO procedures was conducted to compare the efficacy of conventional LLINs treated with pyrethroids only and LLINs with combinations of pyrethroids and PBO. Prior to huts trials, we confirmed the level of insecticide and PBO residues in tested nets using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results: Conventional LLINs (Type 2 and Type 4) have the lowest effect against local multi-resistant An. funestus s.s. and An. coluzzii populations from Kpomè. Conversely, when LLINs containing mixtures of pyrethroids and PBO (Type 1 and Type 3) were introduced in trial huts, we recorded a greater effect against the two mosquito populations (P < 0.0001). Tunnel test with An. funestus s.s. revealed mortalities of over 80% with this new generation of LLINs (Type 1 and Type 3),while conventional LLINs produced 65.53 ± 8.33% mortalities for Type 2 and 71.25 ±7.92% mortalities for Type 4. Similarly, mortalities ranging from 77 to 87% were recorded with the local populations of An. coluzzii. Conclusion: This study suggests the reduced efficacy of conventional LLINs (Pyrethroids alone) currently distributed in Benin communities where Anopheles populations have developed multi-insecticide resistance. The new generation nets (pyrethroids+PBO) proved to be more effective on multi-resistant populations of mosquitoes.
