Kasota is an early-maturing, hulled, six-row spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). It was developed at the Field Crop Development Centre, Lacombe, Alberta from the cross Celaya//Mezquite/Godiva/3/Trompillo. Kasota is short in height, strong strawed, and widely adapted in Alberta. AC Stacey is an early maturing, six-row feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with excellent barley leaf scald resistance. It was developed at the Northern Agriculture Research Centre, Beaverlodge, Alberta from the cross Otal/Melvin. It is moderately strong strawed, and adapted to barley leaf scald prone areas in Alberta, and the Peace River region of British Columbia. AC Albright (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an early maturing, six-row feed barley cultivar. It was selected from the cultivar Otal at the Northern Agriculture Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Beaverlodge, Alberta Canada. Jackson (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an early-maturing, hulled, six-row feed barley. It was developed at the Northern Agriculture Research Centre, Beaverlodge, Alberta from the cross BT607/Pomo. It is short in height, moderately strong strawed, and adapted to western Alberta and the Peace River region of British Columbia. The heritability of resistance to common root rot, caused by Cochliobolus sativus, in 125 progeny (F6-F8) of a cross between barley cultivars Argyle (resistant) and Melvin (tolerant) was 56.7% +/- 4.1 and the minimum number of genes by which the two parents differed for the expression of disease severity was three. The heritability of yield for the same population was 35.3% +/- 3.8, and the number of loci estimated was at least three. There was a greater range in yield and disease expression in the Peace region of Alberta than at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At sites in the Peace from 1988 to 1990, the means of some progeny exceeded those of the parents; this did not occur at Sasktoon. Cluster analysis grouped the progeny into three classes; 45% of the lines were resistant (similar to Argyle), 45% tolerant (similar to Melvin), and 10% were susceptible. The rank of lines for disease reaction was generally similar for most resistant and tolerant progeny at both locations. The regression of grain yield on disease severity with all progeny was negative (y = -4.9 X + 1625 at P = 0.01) but the correlation was weak (R = -0.24). This relationship was stronger when the tolerant group of lines was removed from the regression (R = -0.53, P < 0.001). The relationship between yield and disease among the resistant and tolerant lines was positive (y = 5.7 X + 1136, R = 0.28, P <0.01), yet a within-class correlation between yield and disease in the tolerant group indicated a negative association (R = -0.34, P < 0.01). This study suggests that a breeding strategy for developing lines resistant to common root rot, while maintaining high yield should involve screening to eliminate the highly susceptible lines from crosses and then selecting the best yielding lines with the lowest disease.
Virden is a six-row feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba, and is adapted to the western Canadian prairies. This cultivar is late maturing, strong strawed, mid-height to tall, with large, yellow-aleuroned kernels. Virden is resistant to common root rot and stem rust, and is moderately resistant to net blotch, false loose and covered smuts. There is an average 4% increase in yield when compared to Heartland, for all of western Canada, and an average 5 and 8% increase in yield when compared to Heartland and Bedford, respectively, for Manitoba.Key words: Barley (feed) cultivar, Hordeum vulgare

Leduc is a six-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba, from the cross Steptoe/Klondike. It was released because of its combination of high yield in parts of the Canadian prairies and disease resistance. Otal is a six-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed and released in Alaska by the United States Department of Agriculture and the state Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station at Palmer. Otal was developed from a cross of the Finnish cultivar Otra, and a breeding line from the Weibullsholm Plant Breeding Institute, Sweden. It was identified at the Agriculture Canada Research Station at Beaver-lodge in Alberta as having promise in the Peace River region for its combination of earliness and high yield, and was licensed for sale in Canada.Key words: Cultivar description, barley, Hordeum vulgare L. early-maturity
Heartland is a six-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba. It has high yield, high test weight, good straw strength, and good disease resistance. This cultivar is primarily adapted to central Saskatchewan. Bedford is a six-rowed feed barley developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba, from a cross involving Cree, Keystone and Husky. Its main attributes are a substantial yield advantage over existing cultivars in the barley growing areas of eastern and central Manitoba, excellent straw strength and test weight.
Johnston, a six-rowed feed spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was developed at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Brandon, Manitoba from a cross involving Klondike, Bonanza and Nord. It has high yield potential across the Canadian prairies, particularly in parts of Alberta, resistance to scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), and excellent field leaf disease ratings.
