Data Mining is the process of locating potentially practical, interesting and previously unknown patterns from a big volume of data. It plays an important role in result orientation. Data mining can be used in each and every aspect of life. The same is similarly significant in other areas including sales/ marketing, revenue services, sports, health care and insurance etc. Classification is used to builds models from data with predefined classes as the model is used to classify new instance whose classification is not known. This paper compares the two famous algorithms called Bayesian and Decision tree algorithm and how it works on nominal and numerical data sets and demonstrates its results. The accuracy, precision, and classification errors are also measured to compare algorithm. WEKA tool has been used to perform the experiment.
This paper is about techniques for clustering sequences such as nucleic or amino acids. Our application is to deening viral subtypes of HIV on the basis of similarities of V3 loop region amino acids of the envelope (env) gene. The techniques introduced here could apply with virtually no change to other HIV genes as well as to other problems and data, not necessarily of viral origin. These algorithms as they apply to quantitative data have found much application in engineering contexts to compressing images and speech. They are called vector quantization, and involve a mapping from a large number of possible inputs into a much smaller number of outputs. Many implementations, in particular those that go by the name generalized Lloyd or k-means, exist for choosing sets of possible outputs and mappings. With each there is an attempt to maximize similarities among inputs that map to any single output, or, alternatively, to minimize some measure of distortion between input and output. Here, two diierent types of vector quantization are brought to bear upon the cited problem of clustering V3 loop amino acid sequences. Results of this clustering are compared to those of the well known UPGMA algorithms, the unweighted pair group method in which arithmetic averages are employed.
LIFE stress, mood, and other psychosocial factors may help to explain variability in HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) disease progression. Attempts to support this notion empirically have produced mixed findings; several studies report a positive relationship between psychosocial factors and various indicators of disease progression or immune function (e.g., Evans et al. 1992; Goodkin et. al. 1992), whereas others have failed to detect any association (e.g., Perry et. al. 1992).
Background: In survival analysis, those who are alive are statistically coded as 1.0 while those who are dead are coded as 0.0. Since everyone who remains alive is given the same score, a person confined to bed with an irreversible coma is alive and is counted the same as someone who is active and asymtomatic. The Quality of Well-being (QWB) scale defines levels of wellness on the continuum between death and optimum function and integrates morbidity and mortality into the same number. This paper demonstrates the effect of including mortality in QWB estimates for male adults with HIV infection.Method This study involves follow-up of a cohort of 386 male adults participating in the San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC). Patients were evaluated using the QWB at enrollment and at six month intervals. All patients were classified into three stages of HIV disease according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) classification: CDC IV (symptomatic HIV disease), CDC II or III (asymptomatic infection) and uninfected male controls.Results: QWB scores were calculated with and without mortality included for men in each CDC class who completed a one year (N = 148) or two year follow-up (N = 60). At each evaluation, there were significant differences among CDC classes and inclusion of deaths increased the variance accounted for by CDC class at each evaluation.Conclusions: HIV infection has significant impacts upon both morbidity and mortality. Survival analysis captures only the mortality dimension, while quality adjusted survival analysis using the QWB includes both dimensions. We propose quality adjusted survival analysis as a more sensitive method for assessing outcome in HIV disease and other health conditions.
Neurological function in 159 subjects infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who had no neurological symptoms or signs (129 asymptomatic, 30 with ARC/AIDS) was compared to that of 62 controls by means of pattern-reversal evoked potentials (PREPs), brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (MSEPs), tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEPs) and nerve conduction studies (NCSs). Central nervous system somatosensory conduction from lumbar cord to cortex was prolonged in both asymptomatic seropositive and ARC/AIDS groups, while peripheral somatosensory conduction, NCSs and PREP delays occurred only in the ARC/AIDS group. BAEPs did not show significant differences among groups. TSEPs were abnormal in 8% of asymptomatic carriers and 43% of patients with ARC/AIDS, MSEPs in 7% and 20%, PREPs in 4% and 0%, and BAEPs in 1% and 0% respectively. One or more evoked potentials were abnormal in 18 of 129 (14%) asymptomatic carriers and 13 of 30 (43%) subjects with ARC/AIDS as compared with 1 of 62 (2%) seronegative controls. We conclude that asymptomatic HIV carriers have subclinical neurological impairment of central somatosensory function and that the neurological impairment increases with disease progression to involve peripheral nerves and visual system.
Individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus-Type 1 (HIV-1), are at increased risk for neurobehavioral impairment, particularly in later stages of the disease. Even patients in the medically asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic stages of infection may show mild deficits on comprehensive neuropsychological (NP) test batteries, although the clinical significance of such deficits remains uncertain. The present study used vocational difficulties as markers of clinical significance of NP impairment. In a sample of 289 HIV-infected, nondemented men, those who evidenced NP impairment had a higher unemployment rate (p <.001) than did their unimpaired counterparts. In HIV-positive subjects who remained employed, NP impairment was strongly associated with subjective decreases in job-related abilities. Neither depression nor medical symptoms could explain the relationship between the NP impairment and employment problems. These results are consistent with previous studies investigating other neuropsychiatric disorders, which suggest that even mild NP impairment can interfere with employment status. From this standpoint, such impairment in HIV-infected persons may be described as "clinically significant."
The aim of this rater-blinded randomized study was to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of haloperidol and thioridazine in the treatment of new-onset psychosis in HIV-positive individuals. Participants were 13 men who had no history of psychosis prior to infection with HIV, and whose psychosis was not attributable to delirium or to non-HIV-related organic factors. Participants were evaluated at baseline after at least one month without neuroleptic treatment and then weekly for six weeks of the experimental treatment using several rating scales. The mean daily dose in chlorpromazine equivalents was 124 mg. Both neuroleptics produced modest but significant reduction in overall level of psychosis and in positive symptoms, but not in negative symptoms. All the haloperidol-treated patients developed extrapyramidal side effects and required treatment with anticholinergic medication, whereas three of the five thioridazine-treated patients had noticeable side effects. We make recommendations for the treatment of HIV-associated psychosis with neuroleptics.
This research describes major stressors in the lives of women who have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Thirty-one HIV antibody positive (HIV+) women infected primarily through heterosexual contact participated in a two hour semi-structured interview detailing the circumstances, context, and consequences of all stressful life events and difficulties experienced within the preceding six months. Qualitative methods of data analyses were utilized (Miles & Huberman, 1984). HIV-related life events and difficulties were classified into primary and secondary stressors based on the stress process model (Pearlin et al., 1981). Problems arising directly from one's seropositivity were defined as primary stressors. Stressful life events and difficulties occurring in other role areas were defined as secondary stressors. Six categories of HIV-related stressors were identified and quantified. Primary stressors were health-related, and included both gynecological problems (e.g., amenorrhea) and general symptoms of HIV infection (e.g., fatigue). Secondary stressors related to child and family (e.g., future guardianship of children), marital/partner relations (e.g., disclosure of HIV+ status), occupation (e.g., arranging time-off for medical appointments), economic problems (e.g., insurance "hassles"), and social network events (e.g., death of friends from AIDS). This research indicates that HIV-positive women are exposed to multiple stressors; some may be viewed as unique to women, whereas others may be considered common to both sexes. Identification of stressors has implications for the design of medical and psychiatric interventions for women.
The methodology used to construct tree structured rules is the focus of this monograph. Unlike many other statistical procedures, which moved from pencil and paper to calculators, this text's use of trees was unthinkable before computers. Both the practical and theoretical sides have been developed in the authors' study of tree methods. Classification and Regression Trees reflects these two sides, covering the use of trees as a data analysis method, and in a more mathematical framework, proving some of their fundamental properties.
In a three-year prospective study in which life events and psychiatric symptoms were assessed every two months, Fourier analyses led to the classification of event-symptom relationships into five typologies. Only one event-symptom typology, representing 9% of subjects, was consistent with the commonly held causal model. The results indicate that further progress in life-events research will require prospective designs, more sophisticated methods for gathering life-events data than the Schedule of Recent Experiences, focus on qualitative features of events (eg, undesirability or threat), and identification of personal characteristics and coping styles that might augment or attenuate the health impacts of life happenings.
