The 4 km Pathfinder effort at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is an extension of and improvement on the sea surface temperature (SST) fields from the NOAA/NASA AVHRR Oceans 9km Pathfinder dataset. In this 4 km Pathfinder project, some important shortcomings in the original 9 km data have been corrected, and the entire time series has been reprocessed at the 4 km Global Area Coverage (GAC) level, the highest resolution possible globally. These Gulf of Mexico seasonal and annual climatologies were produced from 5-day averaged Pathfinder AVHRR SST data from 1982-2009, which are archived at the National Oceanographic Data Center (http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/) under separate accession numbers. The climatologies are available as 32-bit Tagged Image File Format (.TIFF) data files for 1982-2009 and include seasonal and yearly time periods. The climatologies are also included as Arc Grid (.mxd) and .PNG layers with associated legends for user convenience and were assigned projection GCS_WGS_1984. An additional subdirectory contains the annual mean, season 1 (Jan-Mar) mean, season 2 (Apr -June) mean, season 3 (Jul - Sept) mean, and season 4 (Oct-Dec) mean as color-classified .PNG images with a matching shape file that were developed for use in online visualizations.

Four corresponding graphics (climatologies) in GeoTIFF format are provided for the seasonal climatologies. Although the data are represented using 16-bit in the .HDF files, 8-bit GeoTIFF files were developed to facilitate access and use of these data by the widest variety of users. As a result, the GeoTIFF representations of the .HDF files are not a complete representation of the data in the .HDF files.
This document provides five brief reports that address several algorithm investigations sponsored by the Calibration and Validation Team (CVT) within the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project. This volume, therefore, has been designated as the first in a series of algorithm volumes. Chapter 1 describes the initial suite of masks, used to prevent further processing of contaminated radiometric data, and flags, which are employed to mark data whose quality (due to a variety of factors) may be suspect. In addition to providing the mask and flag algorithms, this chapter also describes the initial strategy for their implementation. Chapter 2 evaluates various strategies for the detection of clouds and ice in high latitude (polar and sub-polar regions) using Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) data. Chapter 3 presents an algorithm designed for detecting and masking coccolithophore blooms in the open ocean. Chapter 4 outlines a proposed scheme for correcting the out-of-band response when SeaWiFS is in orbit. Chapter 5 gives a detailed description of the algorithm designed to apply sensor calibration data during the processing of level-lb data.
BACKGROUND Informal evidence suggests that many Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) students from outside of the UK and/or Republic of Ireland who come to the UK either do not return to their home country on qualification or do not practise as SLTs in the public sector. Many factors may contribute to this situation. Concern that it may result in part from a poor match between UK SLT education and the demands of the role in other countries led the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to fund a study of international SLT students' experiences of UK qualifying courses. AIMS To discover and describe the experiences, views and expectations of current and past international students studying SLT in the UK and past international students' experiences, views and expectations of practising as SLTS, both inside and outside the UK. To consider the implications of the findings for (1) international students planning to work as SLTs; (2) UK SLT students planning to practise outside the UK; and (3) all those involved in SLT education: educational institutions; supervising SLTs; RCSLT. METHODS & PROCEDURES The study involved distributing 166 postal questionnaires (some directly to (ex)students and some to their Higher Education Institutes, or HEIs) and carrying out 23 interviews, with both current students and those qualifying since May 1994. Quantitative analysis was carried out using SPSS using descriptive statistics. Qualitative analysis used content and thematic analyses. OUTCOMES & RESULTS Seventy-one questionnaires were received from current and past students, representing a minimum response rate of 43%. (It was not possible to verify exactly how many questionnaires were distributed by HEIs.) The results describe the diverse range of respondents' experiences of studying and working in the UK, their views of working in their home countries and the UK, and their suggestions about strategies that might be adopted to support them further. The results revealed that students come from a wide diversity of countries, with resulting differences in their experiences. However, there were some commonalities in the perceived advantages and disadvantages of working at home and in the UK. CONCLUSIONS The suggestions for change included practical ideas for change both before and after qualification as an SLT. These included courses about the organization of health, education and social services in the UK, adaptations of course delivery and course work to include cross-cultural/linguistic work and 'home-based' projects. Implications of the findings and strategies for home as well as international SLT students are discussed.
An algorithm for calculating feature displacement velocities and for detecting vortices has been applied to 13 years of sea surface temperature data derived from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. A unique global event database for seasonal and interannual studies of the spatial distribution of oceanic vortices was created for the years 1986-1998. The results indicate that (1) the number of vortices in each season is fairly constant from year to year in each hemisphere - however, their preferred locations change on seasonal to interannual time-scales; (2) the maximum number of vortices were detected in the summer and in the winter in all oceans and the minimum number were detected in the autumn; and ( 3) the distribution of the spatial density function shows preferred localizations such as 40degreesS, the tropical instability region, marginal seas, western boundary and eastern boundary current regimes.
: The Naval Research Laboratory and Maryland Advanced Development Laboratory (MADL) have worked on the detection of small arms gunfire using land-based systems and on detection of larger ordnance using airborne-based systems. The primary detection mechanism is the sensing of the muzzle flash in the Mid-Wave Infrared (3-5 um band). Improvements in algorithms and sensors have enabled real-time detection from wide angle cameras without loss of range performance. Shooting events are detected beyond the effective firing ranges of the weapons and with low false alarms. Post-detection imaging of shooters/snipers has been validated for day and night operations. The utility of these sensors is amplified by linking the data to other friendly forces. Network hardware and data protocols have been developed that permit the transmission of the sensor data at both local levels and to remote command stations in real time. This research in ordnance detection is being extended with the development of Gunfire Detection and Location units mounted on HMMWVs. This effort will provide these Operational Experimentation Articles for small-arms muzzle blast detection together with EO/IR/Acoustic adjuncts to enable warfighters to rapidly validate gunfire events and to properly engage enemy shooters. Day and night cameras as well as lasers are mounted on a commanded gimbal. This configuration provides 24-hour situational awareness to the operator when not engaged in gunfire detection and location. The operational experimentation will aid in the development of new CONOPS (concept of operations) for the warfighter. The system's capability to link hostile positions to other sensors and/or weapons enables a very rapid response to the counter the enemy. Further work in airborne detection and advanced systems is planned.
The impact of high resolution sea surface temperature (SST) data on the atmospheric forcing in the Japan/East Sea (JES) is investigated using a high‐resolution mesoscale atmospheric model. We use the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Pathfinder SST (PFSST) and the operational NCEP (National Center for Environmental Prediction) global SST analysis (NCEPSST) as the lower boundary conditions for two numerical experiments. A sharp SST gradient associated with the subpolar front in JES, well‐resolved by PFSST, has a significant influence on both synoptic scale and monthly mean surface winds and heat fluxes in JES. These results have an important implication for research related to coastal atmosphere and ocean circulation and air‐sea interactions.

Using a sample of 531 10-year-olds from Germany and the United States, the study investigated the relationships among the structure of everyday experience, domain-specific control beliefs, acquisition of science knowledge, and solving of everyday technical problems. It assumed that children acquire operative schemata through daily experiences with technical objects and toys which not only transfer to solving technical everyday problems but also have a positive influence on school science learning. It was also thought that the covariation between technical everyday experiences and science achievement/technical problem solving would be mediated by control beliefs. A causal model, developed and tested by means of structural equation modeling, showed that domain-specific out-of-school experience only indirectly influences problem-solving performance, mediated by control beliefs. An overview of current progress is given for the automatic processing database, client/server status, matchup database, and DSP support.
The Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. has been conducting extensive research in the area of infrared tracking systems. Automatic detection of sea surface targets has been experimentally investigated by using a programmable passive infrared seeker system. The Victor seeker system uses two independent programmable infrared tracking systems which are mounted on naval P-3 aircraft and flown at sea surface targets. This system contains an infrared scanning detector array assembly, an infrared camera imaging system and a VME multicomputer control/image processor. The seeker system permits varying key parameters in software and evaluating the performance in real world target scenarios.
