Mnemonic evaluative frameworks have become central to information literacy instruction for assessing information credibility. Widely used tools such as CRAAP, CARS, ACT UP, and SIFT remain underrepresented in scholarly literature and insufficiently aligned with emerging information challenges. This study uses cited reference analysis in the Scopus database to examine 16 mnemonic evaluative frameworks across 280 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and review articles. Citation patterns were analyzed by year, discipline, institutional affiliation, and source title. Findings reveal that while legacy models like CRAAP and CARS retain the most citations, newer frameworks such as SIFT and RADAR are proportionally more cited in AI-related literature. A subset of 49 AI-focused citing documents indicates a disciplinary shift from Library and Information Sciences toward Computer Science, Engineering, Business, and Decision Sciences since 2022. These results highlight the need for adaptive, systems-aware models that address credibility challenges associated with generative AI and algorithmic curation. In response, this study introduces the CAT Test (Check, Ask, Think), a three-part evaluative framework designed to help learners assess AI-generated content by corroborating claims, interrogating model reasoning, and reflecting on platform influence. The findings inform instructional design and contribute to ongoing conversations about algorithmic transparency and credibility in academic librarianship.
This study presents an innovative method for tracking the evolution and repurposing of drugs, leveraging controlled vocabulary systems, specifically CA (Chemical Abstracts) Concept Headings within the SciFindern database. Using thalidomide as a case study, the research demonstrates how tracking article counts over time can uncover information about the substance’s history, properties, uses, and future potential. The analysis involves comparing yearly publication counts of research articles and patents through databases, journal sources, and CA Concept Headings. The findings suggest that monitoring the number of articles by CA Concept Headings published over time can serve as a valuable indicator of the substance’s importance. Such knowledge empowers researchers to develop applications, enhance existing processes, and contribute to advancing science and medicine. The study’s insights have significant implications for the broader field of scientometrics, offering a methodological approach to understanding substance development and impact through bibliometric analysis.
This study examines the visibility, impact, and applications of bibliometric software tools in the peer-reviewed literature through a "Cited Reference Search" using the Web of Science (WOS) database. A total of 2882 citing research articles to eight bibliometric software tools were extracted from the WOS Core Collection between 2010 and 2021. These citing articles are analyzed by publication year, country, publication title, publisher, open access level, funding agency, and WOS category. Mentions of bibliometric software tools in Author Keywords and KeyWords Plus are also compared. The VOSviewer software is utilized to identify specific research areas by discipline from the keyword co-occurrences of the citing articles. The findings reveal that while bibliometric software tools are making a noteworthy impact and contribution to research, their visibility through referencing, Author Keywords, and KeyWords Plus is limited. This study serves as a clarion call to raise awareness and initiate discussions on the citing practices of software tools in scholarly publications.
Library snackables are pedagogical strategies that allow library users to digest information content in short bites. The purpose of a snackable is to communicate useful and understandable information over a short time frame, an aspect that often appeals to Generation Z students. This study launched six one-minute videos informing students about library services and resources. A mixed methods survey instrument (206 respondents) and YouTube viewing data (820 views) were used to gauge student opinion, analyze audience engagement, and evaluate knowledge retention. The findings reveal that students have a positive perception of short library videos, which further help with information transfer and retention.
Citation analysis can uncover ways to apply the use of software in different research synergies. A cited reference search on MATLAB in the Web of Science database retrieved 6,873 citing articles from 2000 to 2020. These articles were analyzed by research areas to reveal the use of MATLAB in unexpected subject-specific disciplines. The VOSviewer software tool was used to generate and analyze keyword co-occurrence clusters by research area. The study found that MATLAB not only holds applications in the Technology and the Physical Sciences disciplines but also extends to the Life Sciences & Biomedicine, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities.
The synchronous “one-shot” information literacy workshop is arguably the most common teaching delivery method used by academic librarians. Challenges associated with this type of instruction largely revolve around repeating the same workshop. Other issues include accommodating and managing large numbers of students, scheduling conflicts, and workshop time constraints. One strategy to overcome some of these issues without hindering quality is to replace the traditional face-to-face approach with online videos. In this study, synchronous in-person instruction was compared to asynchronous instruction using video modules during a laboratory session and as a pre-lab assignment in a first-semester introductory biology majors' course. Students' responses to a survey revealed that online instructional videos have unique benefits and are effectively comparable to in-person instruction.
Databases are the discovery mechanisms used for searching and browsing scholarly information. Citings to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) databases used by computer scientists, engineers, and mathematicians were analyzed for coverage and impact in the literature. This study uses the Web of Science (WoS) database to conduct a cited reference search to ACM Digital Library, Engineering Village, IEEE Xplore, and MathSciNet. The respective citation counts were compared by document types, publication year, language, country, organization, WoS category, and source title. The resulting low citation counts and lack of reference formatting agreement to these databases were in line with the predicted hypothesis. The impact of STEM databases in citations appears to be undercounted since they are not often included in citations. This article is intended to spark debate on the practice of citing databases in scholarly publications.
ABSTRACT Subject librarians are well-positioned to apply and teach searching techniques using online library resources for assisting researchers and scholars on where to publish. A bibliometric analysis was used to compare four premier letters journals in organic chemistry: Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, Letters in Organic Chemistry, Organic Letters, and Tetrahedron Letters. The objective of this study is to develop a routine methodology for evaluating and comparing journals with a similar scope based on researchers’ immediate needs. The study provides a practical guide to help organic chemists decide where to submit a short article for publication. For initial comparative purposes, general parameters, such as subscription rate, open access availability and article processing charge, field categories, language, maximum page length, citation style, peer-review type, review time, publication frequency, impact factor, journal h-index, acceptance rate, and database coverage were obtained from various online resources. Between 1999 and 2016, a total of 20,675 articles from Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 1,732 articles from Letters in Organic Chemistry, 24,889 articles from Organic Letters, and 34,380 articles from Tetrahedron Letters were retrieved from the advanced search option in Web of Science Core Collection (Science Citation Index Expanded). The articles were examined by year, language, country, and organization. The VOSviewer software was employed for an in-depth map analysis of the research topics covered in each journal derived from key terms in article titles. The SciFinder database was used to compare similarities and differences from the articles in each letters journal through Chemical Abstracts indexing.
Purpose Chemical databases have had a significant impact on the way scientists search for and use information. The purpose of this paper is to spark informed discussion and fuel debate on the issue of citations to chemical databases. Design/methodology/approach A citation analysis to four major chemical databases was undertaken to examine resource coverage and impact in the scientific literature. Two commercial databases (SciFinder and Reaxys) and two public databases (PubChem and ChemSpider) were analyzed using the "Cited Reference Search" in the Science Citation Index Expanded from the Web of Science (WoS) database. Citations to these databases between 2000 and 2016 (inclusive) were evaluated by document types and publication growth curves. A review of the distribution trends of chemical databases in peer-reviewed articles was conducted through a citation count analysis by country, organization, journal and WoS category. Findings In total, 862 scholarly articles containing a citation to one or more of the four databases were identified as only steadily increasing since 2000. The study determined that authors at academic institutions worldwide reference chemical databases in high-impact journals from notable publishers and mainly in the field of chemistry. Originality/value The research is a first attempt to evaluate the practice of citation to major chemical databases in the scientific literature. This paper proposes that citing chemical databases gives merit and recognition to the resources as well as credibility and validity to the scholarly communication process and also further discusses recommendations for citing and referencing databases.
Purpose: To examine effects of subjective perception and objective status of cognition on emotional functioning in a sample of adults with long-term neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Method: N = 65. Subjective measures were derived from the self-ratings on the Problem Checklist (PCL) from the HI-FI; the objective status was represented by combined externally standardised scores on neuropsychological tests across three cognitive domains: verbal memory, executive functioning, and psychomotor speed. Results: No relationship was found between self-ratings of cognitive competence and performance on neuropsychological tests. Based on the results of the multiple regression analysis, approximately 40% of the variability in emotional functioning was explained by self-perceived cognitive and physical competence, while the addition of objective measures of cognition increased predictive capacity by only 1.3%. The awareness scores were calculated as the difference between objective performance scores and self-ratings of cognition. Overall, the sample demonstrated a tendency towards low awareness of cognitive deficits. Patients who overestimated cognitive deficits self-rated emotional functioning at a significantly lower level, while those with average or low awareness of deficits were equally emotionally content. Conclusions: Self-perception of competence, rather than objective level of functioning influence emotional well-being and quality of life in individuals with long-term disabilities in our study.
Identifying research gaps and generating research questions are often a first step in developing ideas for writing a research paper or grant proposal. The concept of substance-based bibliometrics uses the counts of substances in the scientific literature to better understand, assess, and clarify the state and impact of information in the chemical sciences. Connecting substances indexed to specific bioactivity or target indicators can lead to assessing the biochemical, biological, and medicinal relevance of substances as well as developing ideas for expanding drug design and discovery through identifying and modifying the structural features of molecules. This study uses Chemical Abstracts through the SciFinder database to count for the occurrence of substances in the scientific literature. The study sets out search strategies for discovering potential research gaps and new ideas through visualization of chemical structures with known bioactivity and target indicators. The author recommends that subject librarians integrate research gap training in their bibliographic instruction classes, particularly to upper-level undergraduate and graduate chemistry students.
Subject encyclopedias have long been regarded as authoritative reference works that contain credible and reliable information on a subject area or discipline for use by scholars and researchers. In the digital age, when subject-specific information is readily accessible online for free or through a subscription-based resource, researchers may no longer rely on standard reference sources such as subject encyclopedias. To determine whether subject encyclopedias are used in research, a citation analysis study was conducted using two of the best-known subject encyclopedias relevant to chemists and chemical engineers: the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology and Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry. Citations to each encyclopedia were obtained from the Science Citation Index Expanded in Web of Science (WoS) from 2000 to 2015 (inclusive) and compared by document type. Article citations to these encyclopedias were compared by year, journal, country of publication, organizational affiliations, and WoS subject category. Over the sixteen-year period, citations to both encyclopedias have doubled from 943 to 1876 peer-reviewed articles. The study supports the view that such long-standing reference sources are still needed for research and valued by the scientific community despite the availability of online resources. The study used VOSviewer to analyze and compare the key terms in the title and abstract of all articles citing each encyclopedia. This analysis revealed sub-disciplinary differences in the use of the two encyclopedias.
The current study explores factors predicting return to work in a sample of patients with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders who have attended a prevocational readiness and social skills training programme many years after trauma. Participants were community-dwelling adults with long-term disabilities (N = 67). Results of univariate analyses followed by multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that both pre-injury (prior) and post-injury (current) factors influenced the likelihood of employment in our sample: prior employment, current employment readiness, current cognitive competence (particularly memory and executive functioning) and emotional adjustment. Our findings demonstrate that both pre-trauma and current factors interact in predicting return to work not only for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), but also for a broader group of patients with long-term disabilities due to a variety of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. Thus, our findings provide preliminary support for ongoing long-term management of individuals with long-term disabilities and warrant close attention of future investigators to potential benefits of cognitive remediation, psychotherapy and vocational rehabilitation in terms of maintenance of initial gains and increased probability of return to work many years after trauma.
The use of authoritative chemical resources by scientists is an important first step to finding reliable and credible information for supporting and validating research results. Given the vast number of commercially and freely available online resources used for searching chemical and physical information, the utility of the traditional ready-reference print resources such as the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (referred to as the “Rubber Bible”) and The Merck Index (referred to as the “Chemist’s Bible”) may no longer be regarded suitable or useful for looking-up information and hence no longer required for purchase by academic institutions. To investigate this hypothesis, a study was undertaken to examine the usage and impact of these resources through citation in scholarly articles. The ‘Cited Reference Search’ from the Web of Science database is used to search, collect, and analyze article citations from the Science Citation Index Expanded to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and The Merck Index, between the years 2002 and 2015 inclusive. The distribution of article citations to these chemical resources was analyzed by document type, research field, country, affiliation, and journal. The article citation yearly counts to these chemical resources were further compared to Wikipedia.
The debate on using Wikipedia as a credible academic information resource is dynamic and controversial. This study used the Web of Science (WoS) database and its “Cited Reference” and “Analyze Results” tools to identify and examine trends in the use of Wikipedia citations in scholarly, peer-reviewed publications for the years from 2002 to 2015. Results indicate that the use of Wikipedia citations in peer-reviewed journals has been increasing since 2002. Given that Wikipedia is considered a nonauthoritative source, it might be assumed that this resource is frequently being cited in open access (OA) journals, which are sometimes considered less rigorous when it comes to publication standards. Alternatively, it might be assumed that Wikipedia is being used by scholars from lesser-quality institutions or from developing countries, where access to authoritative information resources might be limited. This study examines these assumptions and describes the disciplines, research fields, and types of journals that are accepting Wikipedia as an authoritative reference source, thereby increasing its credibility. This research is intended to fuel informed debate on the issue, which will contribute to improvement in scholarly communication.
Critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills in research involves using different search strategies. A proposed concept for an "Imploded Boolean Search" combines three unique identifiable field types to perform a search: keyword(s), numerical value(s), and a chemical structure or reaction. The object of this type of search is to help refine, narrow, and speed the searching process for finding relevant information, which would otherwise yield humanly unmanageable result sets. This search strategy is introduced to third year chemistry students in an information literacy workshop using SciFinder, Reaxys, and Web of Science Structure Search. The aim of the workshop is to help students develop hands-on familiarity on the use of chemistry databases and search strategies for scientific information retrieval. The "Imploded Boolean Search" adds a new skill set to a student's arsenal of search strategies. A survey and training exercise are used to assess the workshop.
PURPOSE:To investigate utility of the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) in a mixed sample of adults with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. METHOD:Cross-sectional, interview-based study. Participants were community-dwelling adults with disabilities resulting from neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders (N = 54), who participated in a pre-vocational readiness and social skills training program. Psychometric properties of the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) were assessed and validated against Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory (MPAI) and The Problem Checklist from the New York University Head Injury Family Interview (PCL). RESULTS:Based on the revised scoring procedures, psychometric properties of the CIQ Home Competency scale were excellent, followed by the Total score and Social Integration scale. Productive Activity scale had low content validity and a weak association with the total score. Convergent and discriminant validity of the CIQ were demonstrated by correlation patterns with MPAI scales in the expected direction. Significant relationship was found with PCL Physical/Dependency scale. Significant associations were found with sex, living status, and record of subsequent employment. CONCLUSIONS:The results provide support for the use of the CIQ as a measure of participation in individuals with neurological and neuropsychiatric diagnoses and resulting disabilities. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION:An important goal of rehabilitation and training programs for individuals with dysfunction of the central nervous system is to promote their participation in social, vocational, and domestic activities. The Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) is a brief and efficient instrument for measuring these participation domains. This study demonstrated good psychometric properties and high utility of the CIQ in a sample of 54 individuals participating in a prevocational training program.
This study investigates the degree of indexing of gold open access (OA) journals within the field of communication studies in five major commercial bibliographical databases commonly subscribed to by academic libraries and used by researchers and students. Results of the study indicate that 32 percent of the 147 gold OA journals identified were indexed in the five target databases. The communication studies databases provided the most complete indexing, while among the multidisciplinary databases, Scopus provided more coverage, compared to Academic Search Complete and Web of Science.
Open access (OA) journals promote the opportunity for peer-reviewed journal articles to be freely accessible. In recent years, the number of OA journals has exploded in all disciplines. Previous studies have identified print-based pedagogical discipline-specific journals outside the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) for librarians to consider as vehicles for publishing articles related to subject-based Information Literacy (IL). The present study explores the presence of discipline-specific pedagogical journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and presents a table of OA journals with their acceptance rates and review times. Pedagogical OA journals are highlighted as a potential opportunity for librarians to pro-actively reach out to faculty within a discipline and contribute towards the OA movement.
