This article explores the dismantling of professional autonomy during a change management programme at a business school in the United Kingdom. The change programme proposed the disinvestment from research in Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Political Economy and resulted in compulsory redundancies. The study reconstructs the managerial processing of this 'case for change' with a particular focus on the mechanisms behind the dismantling of professional autonomy. Specifically, three mechanisms of degradation are highlighted: first, a managerial attitude of censorship and anti-intellectualism that serves to demean academic scholarship, second, the regulation of time, space and information that deprives academics of the means to defend themselves and, finally, the isolation of professionals and the creation of docile academic subjects. By focussing on the micro-physics of power and understanding the mundane processes through which it takes effect and circulates, the ways in which it routinely undermines the autonomy of those it wants out, the article offers further avenues to discuss ways to resist the dismantling of professional autonomy in the managerial university.
Cooperatives are seen as the bedrock of democratic control and an alternative to capitalist enterprises but also as sites of ‘degeneration’ of democratic values and hopes. In this article, the authors conceptualize that cooperatives are a prime example of a paradoxical organization, which must deal with the organizing paradox of democracy and hierarchy. Based on a multiple case study of 14 cooperatives in Germany, the authors unfold four different ways of handling this organizing paradox, ranging from upholding a grassroots democracy to seemingly uncontested forms of autocracy. Their typology demonstrates that participatory practices are not determined by the size of the cooperative or the sector in which it operates. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of participation and democracy as sensemaking devices, which fosters reflections on the organizing paradox and its handling and subsequently on the promises and pitfalls of cooperatives as ‘imperfect democracy’.

The aim of this stream is to facilitate conversations in which the precarious presents and open futures in the field of health and social care are examined and discussed. We seek to uncover the causes, symptoms and impECR lications of ways in which the uncertainties of this sector are constructed and exacerbated. Our ambition is to facilitate a dialogue between those who share interests in applying ideas from critical management studies to the field of health and social care in order to uncover hidden assumptions and unacknowledged challenges.
Recognition in work organizations is an ambiguous phenomenon. On the one hand it can foster peoples’ dignity, struggles for self-respect and self-esteem. On the other it can function as a mechanism to stabilize and reproduce organizational power relations. Bringing into dialogue the conceptualizations of recognition in critical theory, namely developed in the writings of Axel Honneth, and structuralist and poststructuralist thinking, this working paper points to this Janus-faced character of recognition in work organizations. Thus, the paper theoretically carves out the critical and emancipatory potential as well as the subjugating character of recognition. For bolstering our conceptual enhancement of the theory of recognition, we draw on further empirical and conceptual studies. In this way, we illuminate major characteristics of the interrelated circuits of power and recognition in work organization.

Background and purpose: Although employee share ownership (ESO) deserves of a long tradition, we still know little about employees' perspectives about ESO. The lack of knowledge about the employees' attitudes towards ESO is discursively filled in the ESO debate. This paper challenges that deficit by carrying out a semantic analysis of the literature with the aim to identify the various actor constructions used implicitly in the ESO discourse.Design/Methodology/Approach: We conduct a semantic analysis of the ESO discourse. To unfold the order of this discourse we draw on the distinction between surface and underlying structure of communication in the sense of Michel Foucault. We interpret some semantic lead differences, a term coined by Niklas Luhmann, to constitute the underlying structure of communication. Results: We can identify six different streams on the ESO discourse's surface level each defined by the ends pursued. The discourse's underlying structure is made up of the distinctions production-consumption, capital-labour, and ownership- control that also determine the actor models implicitly in use. Conclusion: We can identify five different actor models implicit in the ESO discourse. While the CEE discourse differs on the surface level in as far as it is more concerned with questions of political legitimation of the privatisation process than with questions of economic efficiency, thus introducing political distinctions in the discourse rather missing in the west, it shares the underlying semantic lead differences with the Western discourse as well as the actor models anchored in those differences.
