The relative contributions of genetic and environmental components in the variability of anthropometric measurements were studied in 54 twin pairs. Thirty pairs of monozygotic (MZ) and 24 pairs of dizygotic (DZ) twins were investigated to estimate the role of genetic, environmental and hereditary factors determining anthropometric measurements comprising body weight, standing height, sitting height, knee height, arm span, chest circumference and biiliac diameter. Within-pair variance for all the measurements were significantly smaller (p < 0.05-0.01) in MZ twins than in DZ twins of both-sex twin group. Within-pair correlations for those measurements were higher (p < 0.01) in both MZ and DZ twins. Correlation values were, apparently, higher more in MZ than in DZ twins. Besides, all the measurements are highly heritable components and heritability estimates ranged 40%-91%. When both MZ and DZ twin pairs of both-sex population were classified, based on age and sex, into different sub-groups interindividual variabilities were altered to a certain degrees. These data state that anthropometric measurements are influenced by genetic factors than environmental factors and besides, age and sex are possibly associated, to some extent, with the genetic influence upon anthropometric measurements.
Thirty pairs of monozygotic (MZ) and 20 pairs of dizygotic (DZ) twins, of both sexes, were studied to estimate the role of genetic and environmental factors determining fitness measurements comprising vital capacity (VC), vertical jump, flexibility, agility, and PFI score. Intra-pair variances for VC, vertical jump, and heart rate were significantly smaller (p < 0.05-0.01) in MZ than in DZ twins, where values for flexibility, agility, and PFI were insignificant. Intra-pair correlations for VC, vertical jump, and heart rate were higher (p < 0.01) in MZ than in DZ twins where the opposite was found in the case of flexibility and agility. The correlation value for PFI was higher in both MZ and DZ twins. Following adjustment for physical characteristics including age, weight, and height, none of the results of all the residual fitness measurements were similar to the unadjusted values. Both unadjusted and residual variables with smaller intra-pair variances showed higher heritability estimates. These results suggest that VC, vertical jump, and heart rate are influenced more by genetic factors than environmental factors where the inverse is true of flexibility, agility, and PFI. Thus, the genetic and environmental influence of all the fitness measurements, except VC, more or less depend upon physical characteristics in this study.
Forty two male brick-field workers of two age groups, viz. 20-29 and 30-39 yrs were studied with a view to determine their aerobic capacity (VO2 max). The average values of VO2 max in l.min-1 showed only small change between the young and the aged groups, but the values of the VO2 max in ml.kg.-1min-1 showed significant difference between the groups due to body weight increase in the aged group. The aerobic capacity of the workers engaged in heavy manual work such as puddlers and load carriers were found to be comparatively higher and a positive significant relationship has been established between the aerobic capacity and different occupations in the brick-field workers.
Pulmonary function measurements were made in 230 healthy non-smoking women from Calcutta with an age range of 20-59 years. The tests consisted of vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced expiratory volume in one second as a percentage of forced vital capacity (FEV1%), forced expiratory time (FET), maximum voluntary ventilation, uncontrolled frequency (MVVF), forced expiratory flow (FEF200-1200ml), forced mid-expiratory flow (FEF25-75%), forced end-expiratory flow (FEF75-80%) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Except for PEFR, all the measurements were made with the help of two 9-litre closed-circuit-type expirographs using standard spirometric techniques. PEFR was recorded with the help of two Wright peak flow meters. Prediction formulae were derived on the basis of physical characteristics. Age and height were found to be the significant predictor variables for VC, FVC and FEV1, while only age was significant for FEV1%. The FVC and FEV1 values of the subjects, standardized for age and height, are much lower than those of Americans, Europeans and Jordanians. On comparison with data reported from other parts of India, it was revealed that the VC and FEV1 values of the current study, after adjustment for age and height, were much higher than those of Southern Indians but comparable with those of North-Western Indians.
The establishment of normal standards of dynamic pulmonary function measurements in the form of prediction equations will serve as a remedial measure of different aspects of obstructive pulmonary diseases, especially in children. With a view to achieving the target, dynamic pulmonary function measurements were undertaken on 328 healthy school-going children of West Bengal having age ranging between 9 and 18 years. All the spirometric measurements except PEFR were taken with the help of a 9 l closed-circuit type expirograph following the methods and techniques of American Thoracic Society. PEFR was measured by Wright Peak Flow Meter. Prediction equations were derived on the basis of age and height for all the pulmonary function measurements except FEV1% and FET. The prediction equations for FVC, FEV1, MVVF, and PEFR were reliable, but relative variability of predicted FEF25-75% and FEF75-85% was very large. A comparative study of FVC, FEV1, and PEFR values of our subjects, standardized for age and height, was much closer to the boys of Delhi in FVC but higher than South Indian boys in FEV1, North and South Indian boys in PEFR. In an attempt to compare FVC and FEV1 values of our subjects with foreign populations, it is revealed that boys of our study were much lower than American (White), European, and Jordanian boys but comparable with those of Chinese and Libyan boys.
Long term use of barbital sodium in the albino mice mother during pregestation and gestation periods results in depressed adrenal function of the mother. Transfer of this agent through placenta and breast milk induces the adrenocortical activity of the newborns as a whole. Hence a biphasic role of this pharmacodynamic agent on adrenal function is observed which is interrelated not only with the days variance of treatment but also with the age of the animals. Results have been interpreted both histologically and histochemically.
Three hundred thirty-four healthy male non-smokers and 300 healthy male smokers of the age range 20-60 years were investigated for their spirometric lung functions by the method and technique recommended by American Thoracic Society. It was found that FVC, FEV1, FEV1%, FEF200-1, 200, FEF25-75%, FEF75-85%, MVV, and PEFR were significantly lower in smokers. When the subjects were blocked into several half decades these differences persisted. These functions deteriorated with age both in smokers and non-smokers, but in the former group the functions were reduced to a greater extent. Significant negative correlation was obtained between lung functions and smoking histories. Separate multiple regression equations were developed separately for non-smokers and smokers. The sensitivity of the tests was determined. The FEF25-75% and FEV1 were found to be most sensitive in detecting early airway obstruction. When comparison of lung function wasmade among American, European, Jordanian, Negro, and Pakistani subjects, it was found that the former three groups are superior to the remaining. Negroes and Pakistanis are comparable to Indians in respect to their lung function. These differences in these functions between the nations of developed countries and the underdeveloped or developing countries might be attributable to the differences in their life-style, physical activity status, nutritional status, environmental condition, and race and ethnicity. The spirometric functions of Indians in the Eastern region of India are comparable to North-West Indians and superior to Southern Indians.
The maximum aerobic capacity (VO2 max) of young untrained Bengali girls aged between 22-24 years after maximum workload as determined by bicycle ergometer, standard step test and a treadmill is studied in 22 subjects. It was found that the VO2 peak in the treadmill exercise was significantly higher than that obtained by the step test and bicycle ergometer, in that order. On each type of ergometer, VO2 max was found to be positively correlated with body weight, body surface area, maximal pulmonary ventilation and maximal oxygen pulse.
