Pulmonary pseudoaneurysms have been described as an unusual complication of Swan-Ganz catheter placement, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, aspergillomas, and pulmonary hypertension. Untreated, they may lead to life-threatening hemorrhage. Coil embolization to occlude the pseudoaneurysms is the treatment of choice. This report describes a case in which a pulmonary pseudoaneurysm that likely resulted from the previous use of a Swan-Ganz catheter was identified but in which angiography failed to demonstrate a feeding vessel. The pseudoaneurysm was visible by transthoracic ultrasonography because it was surrounded by consolidated lung, possibly related to hemorrhage. Ultrasonography was used to guide puncture of the pseudoaneurysm, and percutaneous coil embolization was performed subsequently. Subsequent angiography and computed tomography demonstrated successful occlusion of the aneurysm. This case illustrates the utility of percutaneous management of pulmonary pseudoaneurysms in certain cases.
The corn rootworm (CRW; Diabrotica spp.) is one of the most serious pests of corn in the USA. Chemical insecticides and crop rotation have been the only two options available to growers for managing CRW. Unfortunately, both of these tactics can be ineffective as a result of either resistance or behavioral modifications. In this paper, we describe transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids that control CRW. These hybrids were created with a Cry3Bb1 Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) variant that is approximately eight times more lethal to corn rootworm larvae than the wild‐type protein. A DNA vector containing the modified cry3Bb1 gene was placed under control of a root‐enhanced promoter (4‐AS1) and was introduced into embryonic maize cells by microprojectile bombardment. Described here is the molecular genetic characterization, protein expression levels, and field performance of the recently commercialized MON863 hybrids.
This article reports on a study of regional depository libraries for a descriptive analysis of regional depository library capabilities and practice in providing public access to electronic federal government information. The study indicates that regional depository libraries are progressing in the creation of an environment that supports public access to this information. The responding regionals are equipped with public access microcomputer workstations and a majority provide access to CD-ROM's, the Internet, and GPO Access. Adequate staffing and resources, however, remain a problem for some.
