Abstract Propionitrile is selectively formed by reduction of nitropropane using CO and H2O (8 atm of CO, 40 °C). Rhodium carbonyls combined with bases show high catalytic activity. Amines with high pKa values as additives give high yields of propionitrile.
The use of homogeneous catalysts on an industrial scale leads to a number of practical problems, e.g., difficulties associated with corrosion, plating out on the reactor wall, and catalyst recovery from the reaction mixture. Chemically bonding metal complexes to an insoluble solid is one of the sufficient methods for conquering these difficulties.1–3 This method is achieved by the treatment of metal ions with organic or inorganic polymers containing ligand atoms having a coordinating ability to metals. The catalysts, prepared in such manner, are situated between those usually classified as “heterogeneous” and as “homogeneous”, and can be regarded as a new class of catalysts: “hybrid catalysts”.
AbstractDer Rh‐Carbonyl‐Komplex (II) wird als Katalysator bei der Oxosynthese der Aldehyde (V) und Alkohole (III) und (IV) aus den Olefinen (I) bzw. bei der Coproportionierung von Heptanal (VI) und Heptanon (VII) zu Heptanol (VIII) eingesetzt.
ZrO(OAc)2 catalyzes selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes without formation of carboxylic acids and also chemoselective oxidation of allylic alcohols to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in the presence of tBuOOH.
It was found that Cu–ZnO catalysts showed maximum specific activities at the composition of 70 wt% CuO for the CH3OH conversions both in the absence and presence of H2O. Taking into considerations the kinetic isotope effects and the electronic state and particle size of the Cu metal, it is proposed that the synergistic promotion is bifunctional in nature.

Abstract Various aminated polystyrenes are synthesized by treatment of chloromethylated polystyrene with amines. The aminated polymers are examined as an insoluble support for Rh6(CO)16 in the water gas shift reaction (WGSR). Diethylenetriamino polymer is the most effective support for the WGSR. This heterogenization does not lower the WGSR activity in homogeneous systems.
Abstract Composition of the precursors and its effect on the crystallinity of Ni–SiO2 catalysts were studied using thermal gravimetry and X-ray diffraction measurement. The severer preparation conditions led to the lower proportion of NiCO3 in the precursor. The mean crystallite size of Ni in H2-reduced catalysts, and hence the activity and enantioselecivity of modified catalysts, were found to depend on the proportion of NiCO3.

The VO(acac)2-tBuOOH system shows high oxidation reactivity for secondary alcohols to give ketones.
The thin film of nickel alloys was prepared using a RF glow discharge sputtering system that was discharged between the inside and the outside electrodes of a reaction cell. It was determined by X-ray diffraction pattern that the nickel films prepared by the discharge under B2H6 atmosphere became an amorphous state.
Abstract XPS studies of the reduction behavior of γ-Bi2MoO6 were carried out by using various reactants. It was found that in the initial reduction stage, H2 reduced Mo alone, while allyl alcohol removed preferentially oxygen anions bound to Bi. With 1-butene, simultaneous reductions of Bi and Mo were observed. The reactivity and inter-layer diffusion of oxygen anions are discussed.
Palladium catalysts loaded on bimodal porous silica were examined in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-butenal at 0 °C and a hydrogen pressure of 1.1 MPa. The sizes of mesopores and macropores of the silica support are controllable in the range of 4–23 nm and 0.5–25 μm, respectively. The macropores provide effective paths of mass transfer, and the mesopores present effective surfaces for dispersion of metals. The catalytic activity of Pd–silica with bimodal porous structure depends on the size of mesopores and macropores as well as on the particle size of the support silica. The most active Pd–silica catalyst, with mesopores of 12 nm and macropores of 2 μm, shows much higher activity than does a commercial palladium carbon catalyst without macropores. The results indicate that the diffusion process inside the catalyst particles dominantly determines the reaction rate in the hydrogenation.

Abstract Rh6(CO)16-propanediamine system catalyzes a direct route to 1,4-butanediol from allyl alcohol under the water gas shift reaction condition. Using an aminopyridine in place of the diamine gives γ-butyrolactone in a good yield.
