This study assessed the prevalence of root caries and its risk factors in the elderly population of Khordha district, Odisha, India. Further, microbiological profiling was done for the same patients. The Khordha district was divided into four zones, and municipal clusters were selected randomly from each zone. Residents aged 65-75 years and who provided consent were included in the study, except those with physical disabilities and terminal illnesses. A pilot study on 25 subjects who met the inclusion criteria and the sample size was calculated to be 373 based on the formula N = Za2 {p (1-p)}/L2 x D.E. and rounded off to 380. The majority (70%) of the study population comprised males residing in urban areas having a minimum of middle school education. Most of them cleaned their teeth at least once daily. Tobacco use was prevalent in the population, with 37.3% smokers and 87.4% chewing tobacco, significantly more in males. The overall prevalence of root caries was 20.8%, with 16.3% in males and 4.5% in females, respectively. The mean RCI score for males in the study population was 8.09 ± 14.8, while that for females was significantly lower at 5.89 ± 8.23 (p
Introduction: Dentinal hypersensitivity is a prevalent and distressing dental condition characterised by acute, transient pain or discomfort arising from exposed dentin in response to external stimuli, such as variations in temperature, mechanical stimuli, or consumption of acidic or sweet foods. Dentinal Hypersensitivity (DH) impacts daily activities, such as eating, drinking, and oral hygiene practices. Dentifrices are commonly used in the treatment of hypersensitivity, as they relieve sensitivity by obstructing nerve pathways through the formation of compounds. Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate and compare the efficacy of two types of desensitising toothpastes, Vantej and Dente 91, in treating DH. Materials and Methods: A randomised controlled clinical trial was conducted with 40 patients who had a minimum of two hypersensitive teeth. The clinical investigation took place in a dental set-up in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from July to August 2022. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups (20 in each group) in a 1:1 ratio for the Vantej and Dente 91 groups. Over a four-week period, the patients were instructed to use the prescribed toothpaste twice daily. DH assessment techniques included a Verbal Response Scale (VRS), air blast stimulation, and cold stimulation, both at baseline and after the four-week duration. Statistical analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, with the significance level set at p<0.05. Results: The fourth-week scores compared to baseline scores for the verbal scale, air blast stimulus, and cold sensitivity methods in both groups showed a reduction in DH. In the inter group comparison, the Dente 91 group exhibited greater effectiveness compared to the Vantej group, with a significant reduction in VRS (p=0.02) and air blast stimulus (p=0.01), but not in cold sensitivity (p=0.09). Conclusion: Both Vantej and Dente 91 toothpastes significantly reduced dentinal hypersensitivity. However, the percentage reduction was higher in the latter group, suggesting more effective management of DH. Dente 91 could be considered a promising alternative to the existing over-the-counter desensitising toothpastes.
The older group of people (above sixty-five years) are facing lots of health and oral health issues due to thephenomenon of getting old. For that reason, this group needs the most attention to their health. Towards theend of the 20th century, the configuration of various age groups of people transformed tremendously. Thereare more older people and much more entered into the older group. This dynamic change has a direct effecton oral and systemic health. Dentist has great hand in solving the oral problem in geriatric people. Dentistshould always consider the nutrition factor of geriatric patients. Topmost problem regarding the oral carefacility in the older population is underestimated the oral disease Proper dentist population ratio throughoutour nation to provide better dental care. Regular screen camps in different places to find older patients andgave them special care because due to rapid dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss the old peoplefacing various problems.
Periodontal disease represents various chronic inflammatory state of marginal, attach and free gingivaaround the tooth, alveolar bone, various types of periodontal ligaments which attach the tooth to the boneor anchorage system of tooth, all are tooth-supporting system. The disease of supporting the structure of thetooth starts from a mild form of gingival inflammation. The use of smoke tobacco is a topmost modifiablerisk factor for severe periodontal disease. The use of smoke tobacco has various links with periodontaldisease severity. From the various survey it is found that periodontal condition is worst among Smokedtobacco users than non-users. Giving proper treatment to various periodontal diseases is a great challenge, because at the early stage same patients are not aware of these things. To date there is not some bleeding fromgum, mild pain maximum patient doesn’t aware of these things. When bleeding from gum during hard foodchewing, hard or normal brushing patients reports complain. Gingivitis periodontitis like disease are nonviolent, some time asymptomatic but they have a negative impact on mastication, esthetic of individuals.Sometimes it has effects the speech of people. Disruptions in the function of neutrophils can lead to developgingivitis periodontitis. Down syndrome, neutropenia can lead to periodontal disease. Developing age canleads to periodontitis.
In recent years, it has been realized that women's oral health may differ from that of men in many areas. It is rightly said that the health of a woman's body and oral cavity are bidirectional, hence women need exceptional dental health facilities and attention. The role that different endocrine hormones imbalances during puberty, 1 st to 3 rd trimester of pregnancy, menopause, oral contraceptive use, and females reproductive cycle details has the main role in various sex data in orofacial health status is supported by different medical clinical trials. The oral conditions commonly observed during these phases of the lifecycle of females include inflamed gingiva, the formation of granulomatous tissue in the body, disease of periodontium,, and grade 1,2,3 mobility of tooth. The closest bonding between status and worst dental health condition in the female will need excellent care in investigation plan that assimilates and controls for the diverse array of lurking varying, such as dental diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis and missing tooth), the whole history of female's reproductive physiology, and benefaction communal and financial variables.Dental practitioners need to actively counsel female patients about general and oral health strategies so that they can maintain their oral health and maximize their quality of life. The effect of hormonal changes during the life cycle of a female affects the prevalence and intensity of the oral disease. This understanding is helpful for a clinician in rendering oral health care to these patients.
Oral piercing is one of the very popular body art among younger generation. Piercing considered as a growing phenomenon in Western culture also reflects all the fashion, risk, daring, independence or sexuality whereas other people do it on impulse and to enhance perceived body image or for spiritual reasons. The aim of this paper is to present the local and systemic complications and the usual effects of oral piercing.
This article encompasses the variety of all ceramic materials available now a days and their clinical applications. It will help the clinicians understand the advantages and disadvantages of different types of ceramic materials available based on their microstructure, processing method and usage area. Although PFM or Porcelain fused to metal crowns had rampant use because of their long-term clinical success rate, the quench for more esthetic, more biocompatible materials led the way for the usage of new all-ceramic crowns-a new age dentistry destination.
Here an analytical expression is proposed for the correlation between superconducting (SC) transition temperature (T-sc) derived by Louie and Cohen and charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature derived by Peierls at strong electron-phonon interaction. This expression was verified by the pressure effect T-sc and T-cdw of 2H-NbSe2 with m approximate to 64.86 and c approximate to 2.24 as best-fitting parameters. From these parameters, phonon energies. h root approximate to 3.8 meV and h omega(cdw) approximate to 1.4 meV were calculated for SC and CDW states respectively. It also provides T-cdw very close to the experimental values of 2H- and 4H-NbSe2, regardless of their stacking order and coordination difference.
Dentists must know the impact of blood dyscrasias in the management of their patients. A good history taking in these patients is required to prevent any untoward incident in the operatory, and more so if any invasive treatment is planned. Most bleeding episodes are not worrisome and do not cause any emergency. However, there are cases where emergency management is required and must be provided immediately. Here, we discuss an extraordinary case of an 8-year-old male child who started to bleed after a minor trauma to lips and the blood clot restricted his mouth opening, to the point that there was complete mouth closure.
