Many students with physical disabilities graduating with a postsecondary STEM degree do not acquire full-time employment. Work experiences can provide undergraduates with authentic experiential learning to help them better prepare for successful STEM careers. Internships provide an important transitional learning phase for students with disabilities to practice necessary job tasks and determine what accommodations or assistive technologies they need to effectively accomplish the requirements of a specific job. As students with physical disabilities transition from a postsecondary education institution with student support services to work environments with different protocols for obtaining accommodations, they may not know what accommodations are truly needed or how to obtain them. We propose that college students with disabilities who are exposed to principles of self-determination (SD) theory during Gregory S Fehribach Center internships are better prepared to identify and utilize effective job accommodations in STEM and other work settings. This practice brief discusses the importance of developing critical learning skills rooted in SD during internships, which has resulted in beneficial results for both interns with physical disabilities and employers who may have never worked with a physically disabled employee. The accommodation processes implemented during the Fehribach Center internship program are correlated with the steps of the Action Model for Self-Determination (Field & Hoffman, 1994, 2015). We believe that these SD skills for acquiring accommodations can be applied by students during other transitional learning phases such as going on to graduate school or seeking other jobs.
For students with disabilities in the United States, self-determination theory and practice have guided efforts to promote autonomy within the framework of protecting a person’s civil rights. Initial self-determination efforts for students with disabilities focused on altering the way educators, parents, and other caregiving adults supported their freedom to make choices while learning how to live more independent lives. U.S. schools, colleges, and universities have since drawn on self-determination research to strengthen students’ ability to self-advocate for accommodations and services to achieve equal access. Over time, the application of self-determination has evolved to support students’ ability to make personalized decisions about how to live meaningful, healthy lives in educational settings and in a society that often emphasizes competition, test scores, and narrow definitions of “success.” This chapter will describe leading theories of self-determination and discuss how their application in educational settings has evolved in the U.S. over the past 50 years.

The effects of coaching on learning and study skills, self-regulation, and subjective well-being of students with ADHD attending 2and 4-year colleges or universities was examined. Students were randomly assigned to participate in coaching or comparison groups. Coaching students received weekly phone-based coaching sessions and additional check-ins from the coaches. Students’ learning, study, and self-regulation skills were measured by use of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). The College Well-Being Scale (Field, Parker, Sawilowsky & Rolands, 2010) was used to measure participants’ well-being. The coaching group had a statistically significant higher total LASSI score and statistically significant higher scores on all three LASSI clusters (i.e., Skill, Will, and Self-Regulation) than the comparison group. Well-Being scores were statistically significantly higher for students in coaching than for comparison group students, when corrected for initial differences in executive functioning. Coaching was highly effective in helping students improve their learning and executive functioning skills.
Self-determination is essential to promoting successful transitions for students with and without disabilities. Numerous studies have found that positive relationships are central to the ability to be self-determined, thus making relationship building a key area to address to promote successful transitions. This article provides information on strategies, classroom modifications, and curricula that can be used to help students improve their ability to build an increased sense of belonging through positive relationships with others. Strategies are discussed within the context of self-determination to demonstrate how students can increase their ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and their self-determination concurrently.
Self-determination knowledge and skills are important life skills for success throughout one's life. Therefore, it is important to assess the component skills that lead to self-determination so that appropriate instructional programs, supports, and accommodations to increase student self-determination can be provided. By involving students and families as important team members in the assessment process, valuable information can be gathered, student and family ownership of assessment results is increased, and support for student self-determination is demonstrated. A self-determination approach to assessment can help transition teams gather information about students' needs, strengths, interests, and preferences so that appropriate transition goals can be established. A self-determination focus in assessment can also help ensure that pertinent information is included in students' summaries of performance. Suggestions for practical strategies to promote and assess student self-determination through transition assessment are provided.
Promoting self-determination has become "best practice" in the education of students with disabilities. We synthesize the decades work in this area as a foundation for considering issues pertaining to promoting self-determination in light of the current educational context. We particularly examine the role of promoting self-determination in light of federal standards-based reform initiatives. We conclude that school reform efforts provide an opportunity to infuse instruction in self-determination into the education programs of all students, including students with disabilities. Many state and local standards include a focus on component elements of self-determined behavior and promoting self-determination enables students to perform more effectively within other content domains. The importance of personnel preparation to enable teachers to promote self-determination is discussed.
The Council for Exceptional Children conducted an online Web survey to obtain information on the instructional practices and attitudes of educators as they relate to self-determination and student involvement in the individualized education program (IEP) process. We obtained 523 usable responses from teachers, administrators, and related services professionals. Although respondents highly valued both student involvement in IEPs and self-determination skills, only 8% were satisfied with the approach they were using to teach self-determination. Only 34% were, satisfied with the level of student involvement in IEP meetings. Implications include the need for longitudinal research and technical assistance, targeting administrators, general educators, and special educators beginning in the elementary grades, to improve the capacity of schools to deliver self-determination instruction.
This fact sheet emphasizes the importance of self-determination in effective transition planning for students with disabilities, their families, teachers, and service organizations. In response to information regarding students' postschool outcomes, the past 15 years have reflected an increased focus on improving transition education and services for youth with disabilities. Three specific initiatives characterize this development: (a) federal special education and disability legislation; (b) federal, state, and local investment in transition services development; and (c) effective transition practices research. Outcomes of these initiatives include (a) an expanded perspective concerning transition education and services and (b) identification of practices that apply this perspective to individual student needs. The authors describe effective transition practices in five areas: student-focused planning, student development, interagency collaboration, family involvement, and program structures. Developing specific interventions and service arrays for individual students within each of the transition practice areas is essential for postschool success.

If youth with disabilities are to be adequately prepared to maximize opportunities for self-determination in adulthood, they need to be equipped with the knowledge, beliefs, and skills that lead to self-determination in their educational programs. This article identifies quality indicators of educational programs that promote self-determination. The quality indicators are holistic in nature and address the self-determination of all members of the school community. Guidelines for using the quality indicators for program improvement are provided.
This article describes a system of supports for Implementing the Steps to Self-Determination curriculum and discusses findings from studies on the curriculum, all of which used a pre-post design with Steps as the intervention. Findings from outreach efforts to support implementation of Steps include teachers who are self-determined are better able to promote self-determination for their students, self-determination needs to be supported at all levels in the school organization, self-determination knowledge and skills can be infused successfully in a variety of subject areas, there are many ways to involve parents in self-determination instruction, support for positive relationships is central to self-determination, and achievement of valued goals is an important element of self-determination instruction. Practical strategies teachers have used to adapt or enhance the curriculum are presented.
Self-determination has recently become an important concept in special education and disability services. The concept of self-determination is defined and component skills delineated. Some of the component skills of self-determination may pose particular challenges to people with autism and other developmental disabilities due to the difficulties in communication skills and social relationships experienced by many people in this population. Family involvement is an important variable affecting the development and expression of self-determination in people with autism and other developmental disabilities. Strategies to promote and support parental involvement in self-determination instruction are discussed.
