This interdisciplinary study examined the relationship between bone density and drilling forces required during trans-pedicular access to the vertebra using fresh–frozen thoraco-lumbar vertebrae from two female body donors (A, B). Before and after biomechanical examination, samples underwent high-resolution CT-quantification of total bone density followed by software-based evaluation and processing. CT density measurements (n = 4818) were calculated as gray values (GV), which were highest in T12 for both subjects (GVmaxA = 3483.24, GVmaxB = 3160.33). Trans-pedicular drilling forces F (Newton N) were highest in L3 (FmaxB = 5.67 N) and L4 (FmaxA = 5.65 N). In 12 out of 13 specimens, GVs significantly (p < 0.001) correlated with force measurements. Among these, Spearman correlations r were poor in two lumbar vertebrae, fair in five specimens, and moderately strong in another five specimens, and highest for T11 (rA = 0.721) and L5 (rB = 0.690). Our results indicate that CT-based analysis of vertebral bone density acquired in anatomical specimens is a promising approach to predict the drilling force appearance as surrogate parameter of its biomechanical properties by e.g., linear regression analysis. The study may be of value as basis for biomechanical investigations to improve planning of the optimal trajectory and to define safety margins for drilling forces during robotic-assisted trans-pedicular interventions on the spine in the future.
Information processing systems with some form of machine-learned component are making their way into the industrial application and offer high potentials for increasing productivity and machine utilization. However, the systematic engineering approach to integrate and manage these machine-learned components is still not standardized and no reference architecture exist. In this paper we will present the building block of such an architecture which is developed with the ML4P project by Fraunhofer IFF.

Manufacturers have to face challenges to structure and use the data of manufacturing units. Sensory data is currently focus of specifications, but using the data requires also structural knowledge from the machine that is created during manufacturing but maintained during operational phase. We present the engineering model linking used to support designers and programmers during engineering. Current challenges require to rethink this approach, thus we also present an ontology linking as work in progress to maintain multiple needs and views.
BACKGROUND:Spine metastases (MTS) can be treated via Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) electrodes. To bring these electrodes into vertebral MTS, pathways have to be created. This can be done via transpedicular hammering or drilling. However, this is challenging due to spatial constraints, and because MTS can alter bone density considerably.METHOD:In this work a two-step method is presented that intends to offer cognitive and physical assistance. Step 1 comprises two visualization methods that depict safety margins between and in risk structures. For Step 2, the correlation between Hounsfield Units (HUs) and drilling forces was analyzed to support manual and robot-assisted RFAs.RESULTS:In-depth descriptions of two clinical cases and detailed feedback from the local clinic of neuroradiology are used to present the capabilities of the proposed method. Furthermore, a stiffness criterion is presented to predict drilling force changes from the local distribution and homogeneity of HUs with an inaccuracy of less than 1 mm.CONCLUSIONS:The combination of visualization and drilling force prediction shows potential to support manual and robot-assisted spine RFAs. However, limitations have to be addressed in the future. For example, it has to be carefully evaluated to which extent the proposed method can speed up the planning process and increase intervention safety.
Digital data can be used to optimize manufacturing and create new business models. Becoming a digitally operating business not only requires introducing software but also making extensive process changes. This paper presents a design approach to participatory technology development that is human-centered in terms of changes required of users, their collaboration partners and organizational challenges confronting a company. The method was developed in a research project that implemented a complex cognitive assistance system in different manufacturing companies.
Radiofrequency Ablations (RFAs) can be employed for the treatment of spine metastases. Instruments are therefor inserted through the vertebra’s pedicle into cancerous tissue within the vertebral body. This requires high precision during interventions. We present a two-step method to increase risk awareness during intervention planning and execution of manual and robot-assisted spine RFAs. Three medical experts evaluated our method and stated that it yields two advantages: First, improved visualizations for manual interventions and second, increased safety in hand-guided, robot-assisted setups.
The digital twin is a synchronized digital representation of a production system and a major aspect of the current challenges in industrial digitalization. Once considered from beginning of engineering it can be created aside the production system and can produce benefits in engineering and operations. We present a virtual engineering method that utilizes the digital twin and allows required disciplines to work already in parallel in early phases of engineering. This reduces risks in later phases but also requires more coordination, design matching, and changes traditional processes. Therefor we present a hybrid management concept based on a combination of the V-Model and agile management. The goal of the concept is to support the implementation of virtual engineering and the required change process using virtual engineering as an example of the digital transformation.
Wireless positioning and ranging methods are being worked upon for traditional indoor locations. We apply WiFi and Bluetooth (BLE 4.0) tracking, categorically for industrial applications, by utilizing handheld mobile devices. Both are tested and evaluated in industrial environments varying in difficulty level. A 2D-positioning is performed using trilateration on WiFi signal transmitters. For Bluetooth tracking the fingerprint method on Received Signal Strength (RSS) is used. Fingerprinting of Bluetooth signals outperforms trilateration of WiFi signals by reducing latency, and enhancing accuracy, confidence on the system and flexibility to place the transmitters with a little economical cost.

In this work we propose three applications towards an augmented reality-based machine operator assistance system. The application context is worker training in motor vehicle production. The assistance system visualizes information relevant to any particular procedure directly at the workplace. Mobile display devices in combination with augmented reality (AR) technologies present situational information. Head-mounted displays (HMD) can be used in industrial environments when workers need to have both hands free. Such systems augment the user’s field of view with visual information relevant to a particular job. The potentials of HMDs are well known and their capabilities have been demonstrated in different application scenarios. Nonetheless, many systems are not user-friendly and may lead to rejection or prejudice among users. The need for research on user-related aspects as well as methods of intuitive user interaction arose early but has not been met until now. Therefore, a robust prototypical system was developed, modified and validated. We present image-based methods for robust recognition of static and dynamic hand gestures in real time. These methods are used for intuitive interaction with the mobile assistance system. The selection of gestures (e.g., static vs. dynamic) and devices is based on psychological findings and ensured by experimental studies.
When physicians want to treat vertebral body metastasis with radiofrequency ablations they have to consider many patient-speci c factors, such as the metastasis count and their localization. There is a high interest in robotic-assisted approaches for this type of therapy, because they are hard to plan and execute. In this paper, we present our software prototype to support the planning and intervention execution stages of this therapy. Our work provides a list of nine application requirements, which we derived from interviewing our clinical and technical colleagues. Those requirements, while being tailored to a given setup, are constructed as general as possible to be reusable for di erent con gurations. We focused on three intervention stages, namely image exploration, therapy planning, and intervention execution and mapped them to a systematic application usage design. From there, we combine multiple image and direct volume renderers with superimposed risk structure segmentations and applicator geometry. As a result, we designed a prototype to ful ll our requirements including a discussion of required visualizations and functionalities.
In this paper, a mobile assistance-system is described which supports users in performing manual working tasks in the context of assembling complex products. The assistance system contains a head-worn display for the visualization of information relevant for the workflow as well as a video camera to acquire the scene. This paper is focused on the interaction of the user with this system and describes work in progress and initial results from an industrial application scenario. We present image-based methods for robust recognition of static and dynamic hand gestures in realtime. These methods are used for an intuitive interaction with the assistance-system. The segmentation of the hand based on color information builds the basis of feature extraction for static and dynamic gestures. For the static gestures, the activation of particular sensitive regions in the camera image by the user’s hand is used for interaction. An HMM classifier is used to extract dynamic gestures depending on motion parameters determined based on the optical flow in the camera image.
