This paper analyses the vulnerability of a Radio FrequencyIDentification (RFID) equipped distribution centre (DC) of a supply chain against the Statistical Disclosure Attack (SDA).We built a simulation model to assess the success probabilities of the attack against differently configured distribution centres and attackers.The success probability of an SDA against a DC varies, depending on the organization of the DC, as well as on the number of customers and their structure.The success probability decreases if a supplier delivers multiple products to a customer in a single round, as well as if the fraction of observed deliveries by the attacker falls below a certain threshold.
The use of radio frequency identification (RFID) in supply chains has received a lot of attention from academia and practitioners in the recent past. Due to important gains in efficiency and visibility in the supply chain, a widespread adaptation is expected to make RFID tags ubiquitous in the future. Thus far, the main criticism of RFID revolves around privacy problems. In this paper, we show that other security issues besides consumer privacy may arise, particularly in a supply chain. Analysed situations include open- and closed-loop RFID setups and the impact of different attacks on these setups. Building on this, we propose an RFID attack risk classification. Furthermore, we discuss the practical implications of these risks on supply chain operations.
Abstract Supply Chain Management (SCM) is continuing to gain importance, both in industry and academia. Most SCM courses ,offered by universities ,and business schools ,are text-based. Approaches to illustrate the dynamic ,behaviour of supply ,chains are the well-known Beer Game and simulations. Even though the Beer Game allows students to see ,consequences ,of individual decisions for the entities of a linear supply chain, learning effects are limited because of the rather special setting. The paper discusses how we used discrete event simulation models described in the literature as requirements definitions for replicated model development.
