Pedagogy emphasises children’s participation in education as a child’s right and a prerequisite for learning and democratic education. However, studies show that participatory practices are not dominant in early childhood education (ECE). This calls for focused interventions during initial teacher education (ITE) to rectify this shortfall. This study examined pre-service teachers’ beliefs about children’s participation, exploring the effects of a targeted intervention during ITE in transforming pre-service teachers’ beliefs about a participatory paradigm in ECE. Pre-service teachers from three universities completed an open-ended questionnaire, both prior to and following the intervention, as well as a self-rating scale with open- and closed-ended questions post-intervention. The results displayed the variety of pre-service teachers’ beliefs, revealing the possibilities for their transformation after the intervention. The shifts observed in the pre-service teachers’ thinking after the intervention showed a shift in terms of the meaning of participation, their recognition of children’s abilities and rights, their ability to criticise the controlling role of the teacher, and their awareness of strategies to enhance co-decision-making processes in ECE. This study provides teacher educators with an understanding of the content of and ways to design interventions to foster participatory pedagogies in ECE during ITE.
While initial teacher education (ITE) has been acknowledged as an important process for improving the quality of education by preparing future teachers, less attention has been paid to the support of the continuous professional learning of teacher educators (TEs). This study reports on the supporting processes and tools for a collaborative inquiry-based systematic reflection of five TEs and the effects of their use in constructing professional knowledge about ITE. The reflective written reports and reflective discussions of the TEs are thematically analysed to show the focus of inquiry, the links among inquiry, reflection, and action, as well as the contributing role of collaboration within a professional learning community (PLC). The results show that the TE inquiry was a continuous process of exploring the beliefs, understandings, and participation of pre-service teachers (PSTs) during teaching; the impact of the teaching context on TE actions and decisions; and the ways in which their collaboration enhanced professional learning. The inquiry results informed the reflections and practice design of TEs. Guiding questions, sustained interactions among the PLC members, and support from a facilitator created opportunities for the collaborative construction of the professional learning of TEs. This article provides TEs or/and facilitators of PLCs in teacher education with a methodology for supporting professional knowledge through collaborative inquiry and reflection.
VOICE - A DIGITAL OPEN EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM FOR SUPPORTING TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: DESIGN AND EVALUATION
The study explores the representations of childhood in Greek language school textbooks for primary second graders within a broad chronological period, from 1934 to date. School textbooks are understood as social representations of social categories and social phenomena which Greek pupils are assumed to embed. Drawing from the “new sociology of childhood” which perceives childhood as a social construction we examine the representations of childhood in school textbooks concerning their positioning in different contexts, namely the rural versus urban contexts of children’s lives. Childhood representations are analysed through a thematic analysis of texts. Findings show different representations of childhood in rural and urban contexts that however change during the course of time. Representations of childhood in rural contexts construct a perception of a homogeneous, deficit, “adult-to-be” childhood, either evil or innocent, but mainly close to John Locke’s conception of the “immanent child”. On the other hand, as time goes by, and particularly after the 1980s, childhood images construct a dominant image of urban childhood, which depicts children as spontaneous, free to take the initiative and enact their interests relating in this way to the tribal childhood discourse with references to an agentic childhood. Overall, our findings show that childhood is not represented as an unchangeable continuum but its construction is affected by changes observed in the time period over which textbooks are written.
This study explores the structure of teachers’ beliefs regarding the planning of a museum visit with their class. We developed and administered the “Visit a Museum” (ViMu) questionnaire to 754 pre- and in-service Greek school teachers to examine teachers’ beliefs based on three dimensions: the cognitive, the affective, and the cultivation of positive attitudes towards museums. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that teachers’ beliefs are structured across the three uncorrelated dimensions tapping into the same factor that expresses their unity. This structure underlies teachers’ beliefs regardless of whether they are pre- or in-service. Implications for teachers’ education and professional learning are discussed.
Promoting students' critical thinking is an important task of Teacher Education. This is a review paper of 39 research papers regarding the critical thinking practices that are utilised in Teacher Education programmes, including instructional approaches and strategies, ways of assessment, their results, and the factors that affect their success. Both the description and the results of the studies, as well as researchers' interpretations/discussion of their findings, are content analysed based on the construction of an analysis chart. A critical analysis of the characteristics of interventions according to the results and researchers' opinions shows that a variety of factors affect their success. Thus, the personal (i.e. students' learning style and motivation), methodological (i.e. methods, tools, duration, feedback), and contextual (i.e. classroom climate, supportive initiatives) features of the intervention are important for effective CT instruction and the improvement of student teachers' CT skills and dispositions.
In this article I reflect on my experiences facilitating teachers as researchers and reflective practitioners and the importance of enhancing the dynamic and complementary relationship between theory, research, practice and reflection at every step of action research. Given the complexity of teachers' participation in action research, I drew on a reflexive research-based account within a second-order process of action research to support a group of teacher-researchers to rethink their understanding of participatory education and transform their own practices. This research-based account describes the challenges faced, the decisions made, and the actions taken, all shaped by ongoing dialogues with teachers' beliefs and practices, with the goals of action research, and with the processes of gradual transformations observed in both the teachers' thinking and practice and in my own as a facilitator. The present study adds to the discussion of the interrelationships between theory, research, practice and reflection by providing an example of their enactment at every step of action research in order to support participatory education.
In this paper we discuss the design of the TOCSIN platform. The TOCSIN project aims at studying the impact of the financial crisis on Preschool and Primary education conditions and practices in schools. Part of the project is the design of platform which may address the relevant issues and problems the educators have to cope with, and provide a support system for the education community, specifically for financial crisis and its implications on schools, students, and their families. Through a qualitative analysis of interviews, we identified the requirements of our target group, which then informed the design of the TOCSIN platform.
This paper provides a brief description of the Greek-Cypriot early childhood education system and focuses on the current education reform. We focus on one of the main changes of the reform, a new status for play within the daily educational programme. The goal of this paper is two-fold; first to portray play in the former and current proposed curricula though document analysis and second to provide examples of the current practices through non-participant observations and interviews with children, teachers and principals, concerning the role of play and describe how these have been traditionalised. Findings show the different perspectives on play and support the need for the reconceptualisation of play, since free activities are basically organised around structured and teacher-directed activities. The paper provides a stance on play which allows children to be social agents, supports socio-cultural processes of learning and encourages participation in meaningful play activities.
This study examines preservice teachers' beliefs about childhood in an attempt to see how they may support an active, participatory role for children in early childhood education (ECE). Three hundred sixteen early childhood preservice teachers described childhood characteristics and children's ability for decision-making in a written text. These texts were content analyzed and then quantified. Preservice teachers' beliefs about childhood were found to vary and some of their beliefs corresponded to existing scientific theories and typologies. Despite this variation, preservice teachers' beliefs had dominant ontological and epistemological presuppositions that highlighted childhood as a homogeneous period of human life, as a state of being, rather than as a dynamic and developing period of life. The majority of preservice teachers assigned children with an ability to make decisions but only under specific preconditions. We argue that these beliefs may act as obstacles for the enhancement of participatory processes in ECE due to their ontological and epistemological underpinnings. Implications of current findings in relation to teacher education are discussed.
There is a growing body of research examining the impact of science field trips on pupils' learning in science education and the factors that influence their success. However, there is a limited number of studies that focus on the way teachers' beliefs influence their practices in an informal science-learning venue. This research aimed to investigate teachers' practices, when they plan, implement and comment upon the outcomes of a school visit to a science and technology museum in relation to their beliefs regarding the value of informal education, ways of supporting learning in an informal science-learning venue and the importance of familiarity with the venue. We studied 14 primary and secondary education teachers with respect to a visit they conducted with their class to a science and technology museum within a case-study approach. Interviews with the teachers, both prior to and after the school visits, and observations of the field trips were used to collect and verify our data. We applied a mixed analytical process, both inductive and deductive, to reveal different relations between teachers' beliefs and practices. Results show that there are close links between teachers' beliefs regarding the value of informal education and the learning processes within informal settings that influence their goals, roles and actions before, during and after the school visit. These results are discussed in light of teachers' need for in-service education regarding informal science education.
This study explores the construction of discourses about childhood in the Greek daily press. It employs the theoretical frameworks of the new sociology of childhood and critical discourse analysis to question which discourses of childhood are constructed in the daily press presenting cases where children were the victimisers in school violent episodes. The study showed that while there are distinct discourses constructed in the texts such as the romantic childhood, the minority group childhood, the homogeneous childhood and the childhood as actor, these tend to co‐exist textually. Results are critically discussed in relation to the positioning of children through everyday practices such as the daily press.
