Background: Maintaining hygiene in hatcheries is crucial for improving hatchability and ensuring healthy chick performance while reducing the risk of food contamination. Bacterial and fungal contamination, particularly on eggshells, is a major concern in the poultry industry. Egg disinfection before incubation has garnered global interest, especially with the rise in demand for natural alternatives to conventional disinfectants, which are often toxic and can lead to bacterial resistance. Aims and Objectives: This study evaluated the potential of rosemary essential oil (REO) as a natural disinfectant for eggshells and its impact on hatching success. Materials and Methods: A total of 216 Japanese quail eggs were divided into five groups: A negative control (nondisinfected), two positive controls treated with alcohol or SANIVIR (Quaternary Ammonium) (10%), and two groups disinfected with REO at the concentrations of 10 µl/ml and 100 µl/ml. Eggshells were swabbed to measure bacterial, coliform, fungal, and mold counts using serial dilutions and agar cultures. Hatching rate, chick weight, and mortality were also recorded. Results: The findings revealed that REO effectively reduced bacterial loads, with the 10 µl/ml group achieving the lowest contamination levels and significantly higher hatchability. In addition, chicks from this group had a greater average body weight. However, the 100 µl/ml group experienced higher embryonic mortality, likely due to its stronger concentration. Conclusion: In conclusion, REO at 10 µl/ml demonstrates promise as a safe and natural eggshell disinfectant. Its use not only improved hatchability but also positively influenced chick performance, making it a valuable alternative in commercial poultry operations.
The epidemiological survey was carried out to determine the prevalence of eimeriosis in broiler chickens slaughtered depending the season, to determine the different Eimeria species causing the coccidiosis in poultry farms; and to assess the impact of Eimeria parasite on histomorphological structure and oxidative stress parameters of the intestine. The study was conducted from December 2018 to December 2019 in the province of Bejaia, Algeria. The intestines chickens (n = 366) were obtained immediately after slaughter, each cut into different segments (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and caecum). Microscopic and parasitological examinations were performed according to standard procedures. Histomorphometric measurements of intestine were obtained using Image J software. Oxidative stress parameters were carried out from intestine tissue. Eimeria spp. were detected in 73.77
The Selle Français (SF) breed originated from native France horses crossed with Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Anglo-Arabs and French Trotters, which allowed for individuals to be obtained with excellent predispositions and a versatile usage for equestrian sports. The performance of the SF horse is widely accepted in the fields of show jumping and eventing; however, they have successfully started to compete in other areas such as dressage, vaulting, carriage driving and TREC competitions. To date, information about the genetic structure of the SF breed has been very limited. In the present report, Sanger sequencing was applied to analyse the whole D-loop of mitochondrial DNA of 98 samples representing Selle Français horses originating from two populations: Algerian (n=47) and French (n=51). The result obtained showed the presence of 19 SNPs, which allowed us to divide the samples into 41 haplotypes (OR909723‐OR909773). A higher number of haplotypes was detected in the Algerian population (n=24) compared to the French population (n=14), but both populations did not represent unique clusters and showed a high degree of genetic similarities. The result showed that the identified haplotypes of the SF belonged to four clades: L, A, B and G. The present report gives strong evidence that the Selle Français breed has been established based on a great influence of the Thoroughbred, whose close connection is more visible in the French population. The haplogroup assignment to L clades proved that the SF breed has European origin as ancestral haplogroup L was assigned to West and South Europe while A to West Asia and G and B to Middle East. Our results show SF as an example of a contemporary breed of sport horses with European roots further influenced by local breeds.
This study aimed to determine the effects of air sac injection of rosemary essential oil at different concentrations in ovo in quail eggs on hatching rate, relative chick weight at hatching, and embryonic mortality rate. A total of 1060 Japanese quail eggs were divided into four groups: negative control (non-injected), positive control (30 µL sterile distilled water/egg), and two treated groups with 1 and 3 µL oil/egg, respectively. The concentration of 3 µL/egg showed a toxic effect on embryonic development, as revealed by the significantly (p = 0.015) higher post-injection mortality rate (18.21%) compared to 1 µL/egg with 8.3%. Furthermore, hatchability was significantly increased (p = 0.0001) with 1 µL/egg compared to 3 µL/egg with 69.1% and 44.48%, respectively. No significant difference was observed between the concentration of 1 µL/egg and the control groups (p = 0.822). Both l and 3 µL essential oil/egg significantly enhanced (p = 0.0001) relative chick weight at hatching by 67.14% and 70.32%, respectively, compared to the control groups. In conclusion, injecting eggs with 1 µL oil/egg showed positive effects both on hatching and relative chick weight. The concentration of 3 µL/egg was revealed to be toxic, with dramatic effects on embryonic survival.
Genetic disorders are recognised as hereditary diseases with the most significant economic impact on horse breeding, causing important foal losses, costs of treatments of horses, and maintenance of the mare during the pregnancy. The Selle Francais horses are recognized in many countries and are showing great results in equestrian sports around the world (dressage, show jumping and eventing). The study aimed to detect the presence of three mutant alleles associated with inherited diseases including Fragile Foal Syndrome (FFS), Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA), Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM1) and variant impacting gait type in DMRT3. This trait is important for breeding decision in Selle Francais horses and sheds new light on genetic potential and risks on this breed. The genotyping was performed on 91 Selle Francais horses using PCR-RFLP (for POLD1; GYS1 and DMRT3 genes) and PCR-ACRS (TOE1 gene) methods. The presented report indicated the presence of mutant allele A casual for PSSM1 and allele T associated with FFS syndrome occurrence, in 4% and 6% of analysed horses, respectively. Regarding CA, the present survey did not register any cases of this genetic disorder in Selle Francais horses. Our results show also that about 1% of all the Sell Francais horses studied carry the A allele of DMRT3 gene. The present findings have provided data for these fulness of monitoring genetic diseases and gait type in the investigated breed to avoid losses of offspring.
In contrary to most domestic livestock species, the common donkey (Equus asinus) is widely known as an animal with a marked seasonality in reproductive activity .The annual cycle of daily photoperiod has been identified as the determining factor in the sexual activity. A synthesis of the particularities of donkey reproduction is important and constitutes a basis of scientific reflection for managing asine livestock farms and to establish a well conservation plan for the different breeds around the world. It is necessary to have a perfect knowledge of the seasonal physiological changes in order to optimize the reproductive characteristics in donkeys.The objective of this paper is to review the current state of knowledge on the reproductionseasonality in common donkey. We start with a remainder of some anatomical of the genital apparatus and sexual behavior aspects. Moreover, the investigations undertaken by many authors reveal the influence of the season on testicular biometry, histology, seminal and hormonal parameters in male donkeys’ populations. In conclusion, despite scientific controversy on reproductive seasonal character in donkeys, it could likely be influenced by several factors mainly the photoperiod.
The present investigation was undertaken to highlight the histomorphometric changes of testicular tissues according to season and age in donkeys (Equus asinus) under northern Algeria conditions. The experiment was conducted from February 2019 to January 2020. A total of 21 sexually mature donkeys were selected randomly. The testis were immediately collected after slaughter for the histological observation. The analysis of the correlation coefficients shows negative correlations between DL and other parameters such as DST, GCEH, TTA and ITSA, ranged between -0.24 and -0.79. Also, there were a high negative correlations between season and the histomorphometric parameters, except DL was revealed positive (r=0.65). On the other hand, there were positive correlations between age and testicular histomorphometrics parameters. The results indicated that DST, GCEH, TTA and ITSA values were significantly higher in winter and autumn seasons than in spring and summer seasons. It is also noteworthy that DST, GCEH, TTA and ITSA values were significantly higher in adult and aged donkeys than in young donkeys. Our comparative analysis of histological parameters, suggests that the sexual activity usually occurs during winter and autumn in local donkeys of Algeria. In addition, our results of histomorphometric of testicular tissues are correlated with age of donkeys.
Genetic disorders in horses are mostly fatal or usually cause significant economic losses for breeders and owners. Here we studied a total of 177 Arabian, Barb and Arab-Barb horses from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) using Sanger Sequencing and PCR-ACRS (polymerase chain reaction-artificially created restriction site) approaches to examine the genetic disorders in the studied horse breeds. We identified the genetic variations related to Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA), Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) occurrence, and the studied population was free of the mutant allele determined Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS). Overall, presented data showed that 15 of the studied horses are carriers of two genetic disorders; the investigated horse population showed that five Arabian horses were heterozygous for the CA-associated SNP (rs397160943). The SCID-deletion TCTCA within PRKDC was detected in ten horses (nine Arabian horses and one Arab-Barb horse). This investigation shows the importance of testing these breeds for genetic disorders to avoid further spread of deleterious variants.
Principal component analysis (PCA) is important to describe the total phenotypic variance in livestock. Hence, the selection of livestock can be performed with the main component (PC1) of some phenotypic traits. This research was carried out to obtain the principal component (PC) in the morphostucture of male donkeys (Equus Asinus) at the Kabylie area of Algeria. Two different locations of Bejaia and Tizi-Ouzou province were chosen randomly. A total of 121 male donkeys (jackass) with an average age of 10.75±4.58 years were used in this study. Data of animals’ morphostructure consisted of 17 body measurements and 6 body indices. The PCA analysis in body measurements and body indexes were showed 5PC’s and 3PC’s, respectively that explain total variance in animals’ morphostructure. Besides, 5PC’s of body measurements and 3PC’s of body indexes had a total variance proportion of about 66.79% and 81.12%, respectively. According to Bartlett’s test, both PCA’s in this study were accurate (with significance of less than 0.05). According to Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO), the PCA of body indices was not accurate (KMO = 0.35). It was concluded that body measurements of chest depth, chest width, front-leg length and back length as the PC1 explain 32.16% of the total variance in animals’ morphostructure. In conclusion, the PCA of body measurements in this study is accurate with a high KMO value and significance of Bartlett’s test. The results of this study can be used as the basic information to develop a selection program for Algerian donkeys in the future.
AbstractIn the current investigation, peripheral blood films of 15 COVID-19 patients (44.78±16.55 years), proven by computed tomographic imaging and RT-PCR for coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, were analyzed at the moment of hospital admission. Blood tests showed raised inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein 58.2±61.2 mg/L) with normal values for hemoglobin (126.2±2.6 g/L), WBC (6.8±18.74 109/L) RBC (4.55±0.99 1012/L) platelets (262.4±141.8, 109/L) MCV (79.84±8.2 fL) MCH (28±3.31 pg) and MCHC (350.3±1.15 g/L). The results revealed the presence of hypersegmented neutrophils in 66.66%% of the patients. The percentages of neutrophils with 4 and 5 lobes were 46.25 ± 4.83% and 31.5 ± 14.84%, respectively. Three major red blood cells morphological alteration were observed: (1) erythrocytes in “rouleaux” formation represented by linear erythrocytes aggregation, (2) spherocytes with the disappearance of the usual biconcave disk, and (3) echinocytes showing spiky projections. Apparent reorganization of hemoglobin is found in the majority of the analyzed erythrocytes. Rouleaux formation is observed in 33.33% of patients and spherocytes and echinocytes are present at variable levels in the all analyzed patients. The current results revealed erythrocytes injuries in COVID-19 peripheral blood, in association with hypersegmented neutrophils, alterations that could be involved in the respiratory syndrome.
The objective of this present investigation was undertaken to study the testicular and epididymal biometrical characteristics in Algerian donkeys throughout the year according to age, body weight and seasonal changes. The study was conducted from February 2019 to January 2020. A total of 24 sexually mature donkeys (Equus asinus) were selected randomly. The testis and epididymis were collected after slaughter of donkeys and separated from the conjunctive and adherent tissues. The epididymis has been carefully removed at the testicular junction. In total, 10 biometric measures were selected and performed. Our results revealed that there are significant differences (P<0.05) between groups in most biometrics values. All biometric parameters varied throughout the year and were affected by the season. Significant differences of the GSI and SC values (P<0.05) were observed in different age groups and seasons. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed between the body weight categories of donkeys. The analysis of the correlation coefficients between the biometric values shows high positive correlations, ranged between 0.98 and 0.72 (P<0.001). There was a high positive correlation between age and all the parameters, ranged from 0.85 to 0.61 (P<0.001). However, there were low negative correlations between season and; testicular and epididymal biometrics. It is the first investigation that describes the male reproductive organs in donkeys of the Algerian race (Equus asinus), on the basis of biometric testicular and epididymal measurements. Our results showed that the essential differences were noted between some biometric parameters and the age, season and body weight of donkeys. In addition, the correlation coefficients were supported between biometric measurements and these factors. However, other approaches are necessary to undertake, such as histology of reproductive organs and hormone measurement, for a deeper understanding of the physiology of reproduction in donkeys.
The survey was to define some morphometric characteristics and body biometric indexes of donkeys sampled in the Kabylie area, Algeria. The study was carried out from February to June 2018 in Bejaia and Tizi-Ouzou province. The study population included 124 males and 2 females. In total, 17 body measures were selected for morphometric characterization including and seven body biometric indexes were calculated. Body weight estimated the two equations was 144.3 ± 23.9 and 171.5 ± 28.8 kg, respectively. Significant higher body weight was recorded in the age group ≤ 5 years and the lower body weight in the age group ≥ 6 - ≤ 10 years and ≥ 11 years. Morphological variables of chest width (CW) and Cannon length (CL) were significant longer (P 0.05). This is a first report on the phenotypic characterization in donkeys in Kabylie area (Algeria) based on corporal measurements. Our comparative analysis of morphometric parameters; such as back length, body length, neck length; suggests that donkeys of Kabylie area are typically invariant among breeds and it has not been changed through the periods.
