Pathak & Agarwal (1952) have studied the com- ponent acids of the fats from different parts of a freshwater fish Catla buchanani.Fats from the body and the viscera of two other Indian freshwater fishes, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala, have been investigated by Pathak, Pande & Mathur (1954).The present investigation deals with the blubber and liver fats from an Indian fresh- water mammal, a Ganges dolphin (Platanita gangetica; local name, suinsh) caught in the River Ganges near Banaras in May 1952.The mammal was a female about 4 ft. in length and weighing about 100 lb. EXPERIMENTALPortions of the blubber and of the liver of the mammal were cut up into small pieces and separately extracted several times with hot acetone.The acetone was removed and the residue was treated with light petroleum (b.p. 40-60°) at room temperature, and the lipids were extracted.The lipids were recovered from the solution and dried under vacuum, and kept in 10 vol. of acetone at 00 for several weeks to separate the phosphatides, but none separated.
