PURPOSE:Investigation of the full-field ERG (electoretinography) within 24 hours after the onset of symptoms in central retinal vein occlusion, and repeated examination within the following days and weeks.METHODS:Seven patients with central retinal vein occlusion were examined with full-field ERG within less than 24 hours after the onset of their symptoms and every second to third day during the first 3 weeks. They were then followed for a period of time of six months.RESULTS:The amplitudes as well as the implicit times in the 30 Hz flicker ERG changed considerably within the first three weeks. In the three patients who developed rubeosis, the cone b-wave implicit times as well as the amplitudes were altered considerably. In the patients that did not develop rubeosis, the cone b-wave implicit times as well as the amplitudes in the 30 Hz flicker ERG were more stable.CONCLUSION:The full-field cone ERG reflects the retinal function and the ERG parameters change considerably during the first weeks after the onset of the central retinal vein occlusion. The 30 Hz flicker ERG gives important information concerning the early development of the disease. The optimal time to do a predictive ERG could be after three weeks.
A family with a newly detected X-linked syndrome including sensorineural deafness, mental retardation, dystonia and blindness was examined with full-field electroretinography in order to order to find out if the blindness was caused by a retinal degeneration. Six affected males and 2 obligate carriers showed no signs of retinal degeneration. One of 7 affected males had central areolar choroidal dystrophy confirmed by central scotomas in visual fields and an electroretinographic pattern consisting of an attenuated amplitude as well as a prolonged implicit time of the cone b-wave on stimulation with 30 Hz flickering white light.
Full-field electroretinograms were recorded from four infants (under the age of 12 months), with different types of tapetoretinal degeneration, Some of these patients, appear to have normal fundi. This article stresses the clinical usefulness of evaluation with electroretinography in young children.
Andreasson. S. (Department of Animal Ecology, Lund University, Lund. Sweden.) Distribution of Cottus poecilopus Heckel and C. gobio L. (Pisces) in Scandinavia. Zool. Scripta 1(2): 69–78, 1972. –The distribution of the freshwater sculpins Cottus poecilopus Heckel and C. gobio L. in Scandinavia is presented. In southern Scandinavia there are rather defined limits between the species with C. poecilopus in the upper parts of the water courses and C. gobio in the lower reaches. There are few cases of sympatry. In northern Scandinavia there is a broad overlap and coexistence is common in the large rivers. The distribution pattern seems to be partly a result of an interaction between the species. In the South, the sharp limits are set by falls blocking the upstream dispersal of C. gobio thus indicating an exclusion of C. poecilopus in the lower reaches below the falls by the presence of C. gobio there. Where the species meet or overlap there is a habitat segregation.
