Background The feasibility of precision smoking treatment in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities has not been studied. Methods Participants in the Southern Community Cohort Study who smoked daily were invited to join a pilot randomized controlled trial of three smoking cessation interventions: guideline-based care (GBC), GBC plus nicotine metabolism-informed care (MIC), and GBC plus counseling guided by a polygenic risk score (PRS) for lung cancer. Feasibility was assessed by rates of study enrollment, engagement, and retention, targeting > 70% for each. Using logistic regression, we also assessed whether feasibility varied by age, sex, race, income, education, and attitudes toward precision smoking treatment. Results Of 92 eligible individuals (79.3% Black; 68.2% with household income < $15,000), 67 (72.8%; 95% CI 63.0–80.9%) enrolled and were randomized. Of these, 58 (86.6%; 95% CI 76.4–92.8%) engaged with the intervention, and of these engaged participants, 43 (74.1%; 95% CI 61.6–83.7%) were retained at 6-month follow-up. Conditional on enrollment, older age was associated with lower engagement (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.73–0.95, p = 0.008). Conditional on engagement, retention was significantly lower in the PRS arm than in the GBC arm (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.03–1.00, p = 0.050). No other selection effects were observed. Conclusions Genetically informed precision smoking cessation interventions are feasible in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, exhibiting high enrollment, engagement, and retention irrespective of race, sex, income, education, or attitudes toward precision smoking treatment. Future smoking cessation interventions in this population should take steps to engage older people and to sustain participation in interventions that include genetic risk counseling. BACKGROUND: Three small clinical trials have suggested that supplementation with n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oils may reduce nicotine cravings and at higher doses reduce cigarette consumption. Pregnant women who smoke have fewer pharmacologic options to aid them with smoking cessation. Although n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation has been studied in pregnancy, few studies have evaluated doses of >= 4 g per day, and no previous studies have selectively enrolled pregnant women who smoke. High-dose n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may aid cessation but could be poorly tolerated in pregnant women who smoke because of gastrointestinal side effects. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a feasibility trial to determine the tolerability of high-dose n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation in pregnant women who smoked. We hypothesized that n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid doses of 4.2 g a day would be well-tolerated relative to an olive oil placebo. We assessed red blood cell phospholipid membrane concentrations at baseline and end of therapy (4 weeks) and piloted outcomes for a future efficacy trial of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation for smoking cessation in pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: We recruited 28 pregnant women between the gestational ages of 6 and 36 weeks who reported daily cigarette smoking and were motivated to quit to participate in a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized feasibility trial of 4.2 g per day of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation. Participants reported cigarettes per day, completed the Fagerstrom Test for Cigarette Dependence, and provided blood, urine, and exhaled CO samples. We used repeated-measures analysis of variance to pilot analyses of changes in cigarettes per day and Fagerstrom Test for Cigarette Dependence scores. RESULTS: At baseline, red blood cell membrane eicosapentaenoic acid concentrations were negatively correlated with cigarettes per day (r= -0.44; P=.04). By 4 weeks, circulating n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid levels increased by 18% in the n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation arm vs a decrease of 3% in the placebo arm. Occurrence of gastrointestinal side effects such as burping, heart-burn, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or nausea did not differ statistically between study arms. At 4 weeks, participants allocated to the n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids arm reported a median of 3 cigarettes per day (interquartile range, 1-8) vs 7 cigarettes per day (interquartile range, 1-14) in the placebo arm, which was not statistically significant (P=.99). Participants allocated to the n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids arm had a decrease of 1 (interquartile range, 0-1) on the Fagerstrom Test for Cigarette Dependence score vs 0 (interquartile range, 0-0) for placebo (P=.46). CONCLUSION: High-dose n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may be tolerated in pregnant women who smoke; however, there was a high level of participant dropout, with more participants allocated to the fish oil arm becoming lost to follow-up. These results will inform the design of a future large-scale randomized controlled trial to test the impact of fish oil supplements on smoking cessation in pregnancy.
Objective: To test whether 2 conceptually overlapping constructs, dispositional optimism (generalized positive expectations) and optimistic bias (inaccurately low risk perceptions), may have different implications for smoking treatment engagement. Method: Predominantly Black, low-income Southern Community Cohort study smokers (n = 880) self-reported dispositional optimism and pessimism (Life Orientation Test-Revised subscales: 0 = neutral, 12 = high optimism/pessimism), comparative lung cancer risk (Low/Average/High), and information to calculate objective lung cancer risk (Low/Med/High). Perceived risk was categorized as accurate (perceived=objective), optimistically-biased (perceivedobjective). One-way ANOVAs tested associations between dispositional optimism/pessimism and perceived risk accuracy. Multivariable logistic regressions tested independent associations of optimism/pessimism and perceived risk accuracy with cessation motivation (Low/High), confidence (Low/High), and precision treatment attitudes (Favorable/Unfavorable), controlling for sociodemographics and nicotine dependence. Results: Mean dispositional optimism/pessimism scores were 8.41 (SD = 2.59) and 5.65 (SD = 3.02), respectively. Perceived lung cancer risk was 38% accurate, 27% optimistically-biased, and 35% pessimistically-biased. Accuracy was unrelated to dispositional optimism (F(2, 641) = 1.23, p = .29), though optimistically-biased (vs. pessimistically-biased) smokers had higher dispositional pessimism (F(2, 628) = 3.17, p = .043). Dispositional optimism was associated with higher confidence (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.71, 95% CI [1.42, 2.06], p < .001) and favorable precision treatment attitudes (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI [1.37, 2.01], p < .001). Optimistically-biased (vs. accurate) risk perception was associated with lower motivation (AOR = .64, 95% CI [.42, .98], p = .041) and less favorable precision treatment attitudes (AOR = .59, 95% CI [.38, .94], p = .029). Conclusions: Dispositional optimism and lung cancer risk perception accuracy were unrelated. Dispositional optimism was associated with favorable engagement-related outcomes and optimistically-biased risk perception with unfavorable outcomes, reinforcing the distinctiveness of these constructs and their implications for smoking treatment.
e24073 Background: Understanding the experience of individuals with cancer (pts) who utilize Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) is important given growing access and limited research in the U.S. Methods: Chart review from January 1, 2014-October 1, 2020, of all pts who inquired (but did not initiate completion of all legal requirements), initiated (but did not complete all legal requirements to obtain access to the medications), or completed all legal requirements and could have had access to medications (whether or not they were obtained or used) at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/University of Washington. Chi-square tests were used to compare differences in pt characteristics between the inquired/initiated versus completed group. Results: Of 498 total pts, 116 (23.3%) inquired, 127 (25.5%) initiated, and 255 (51.2%) completed the MAID process, of which, 45.9% (117/255) were known to have used the medications. At time of first inquiry (FI), mean age was 66 years (standard deviation [SD] = 11.9)/median 67.3/range 22-94; 206 (41.4%) were female; and 40 (8.0%) were non-white, while 11 (2.2%) were Hispanic/Latino and 14 (2.8%) were non-English speaking. At FI, 292 (58.6%) pts were married or had a significant other; 152 (30.5%) had a religious affiliation; 23 (4.6%) were uninsured; and 282 (56.6%) had Medicare. Mean months from the original cancer diagnosis and FI was 36.5 (SD = 50.3, range 0.1-366.1). 461 (92.6%) pts had solid/central nervous system (CNS) tumors, of which 231 (46.4%) had presented with metastatic disease. At FI, 84 (16.9%) were currently hospitalized; in total, 236 (47.4%) pts had been hospitalized within the 3 months prior to FI. A total of 71.9% (358/498) had not yet initiated hospice at FI; 51.8% (258/498) had evidence of advance care planning (ACP), including 41.5% (107/258) with a Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment on file. Overall, 152 (30.5%) and 166 (33.3%) of pts had seen social work or palliative care in the 30 days prior to FI, while 62 (12.4%) had met with a spiritual health clinician. Statistically significant differences were found between those who inquired/initiated versus completed with the following pt characteristics: non-white (ꭓ2= 6.596, p = .010); Medicaid versus all other insured (ꭓ2= 9.489, p = .002); those hospitalized at FI (ꭓ2= 6.101, p = .014); and those without evidence of ACP (ꭓ2= 17.090, p < .001). Pts with a hematologic malignancy (HM, n = 37/498, 7.4%) were less likely to complete the MAID process compared to pts with solid/CNS tumors (ꭓ2= 7.378, p = .007); 43.2% (16/37) of HM pts did not complete due to rapid decline. Conclusions: Less than half of pts who initially inquired about MAID completed the process. Recent hospitalizations and evidence of ACP were relatively common compared to current utilization of hospice or prior use of supportive care services. Future research should investigate why non-white pts, those with Medicaid and those with HM may be less likely to complete the MAID process.
Purpose: The study used a cross-sectional descriptive design to explore the prevalence and correlates of religious/spiritual (R/S) coping and struggle in young adults (YAs) during the first 2 months of cancer treatment. Methods: Self-report measures of R/S coping, R/S struggle, depression, quality of life (QoL), intensity of treatment experience, and spiritual/religious identification and practices were obtained using REDCap Survey. Self-report of selected demographic characteristics (age, ethnicity, race, gender, education, occupational status, marital status, parental status, and cancer diagnosis) was also obtained. Results: The prevalence of positive R/S coping was high and higher compared with negative R/S coping. Female gender was associated with more R/S struggle, lower QoL, and higher depression. The Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale and both the negative and positive R/S coping scale of the Brief RCOPE were significantly positively correlated, despite focusing on differing types of spiritual struggle/distress. Conclusions: Both positive R/S coping and R/S struggle occur in YAs during the first 2 months of cancer treatment. Further research to elucidate the experiences of YAs with cancer, and interventions to promote effective coping, will promote holistic cancer care for this population.
Introduction Smoking is a strong risk factor for disease severity in Crohn’s disease (CD) and cessation improves outcomes. The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR) predicts cessation success with pharmacotherapy: varenicline doubles cessation over nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for “normal”, but not “slow” metabolizers. Varenicline side effects are heightened in slow metabolizers. Methods using NMR to optimize cessation pharmacotherapy have not been evaluated in CD. Aims We aim to determine the prevalence of smoking in a CD population and then assess these smokers’ attitudes toward a personalized metabolism-informed care (MIC) approach to cessation. Methods In this observational study, we surveyed 1098 patients visiting an inflammatory bowel disease center about their smoking history. We then evaluated a subgroup of individuals with CD (n = 32) who participated in a randomized controlled trial of smoking cessation using MIC versus usual care. For MIC, medication selection was informed by the NMR (normal ≥0.31 vs. slow <0.31). The primary outcomes were intervention satisfaction and match rates between NMR and medication choice. Results The baseline prevalence of smoking in our CD population was 13%. Intervention participants reported high rates of satisfaction (85%) and chose a medication that matched their NMR result more often in the MIC group (100% vs. 64%, p = 0.01). Six of 16 (37.5%) patients prescribed varenicline discontinued due to side effects. Conclusion MIC produced high rates of satisfaction and matching between NMR and medication in CD patients, supporting patient acceptance and feasibility of precision smoking cessation in this population. To reduce smoking in CD, therapies such as MIC are needed to maximize efficacy and minimize side effects.
Spiritual care is recognised as an essential element of the care of patients with serious illness such as cancer. Spiritual distress can result in poorer health outcomes including quality of life. The American Society of Clinical Oncology and other organisations recommend addressing spiritual needs in the clinical setting. This paper reviews the literature findings and proposes recommendations for interprofessional spiritual care.
Spiritual care and chaplaincy have been part of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) for Distress Management since the first meeting of the panel in 1997, possibly the first time this degree of spiritual care and chaplaincy care integration occurred in cancer care. Since that time, the chaplaincy care section of the guidelines, especially chaplain assessment categories derived from a spiritual care assessment, have provided a major resource for healthcare chaplaincy and have served as a model for integrating chaplaincy into the overall team practice of healthcare. However, this section of the NCCN Guidelines has not been substantially updated since it was originally written. During those 20 years, the practice of healthcare chaplaincy and the research that supports it have grown substantially. In the last year, at the request of the panel, we have updated the chaplaincy care section to fully integrate recently published evidence in spiritual care in healthcare, adding more value to this important set of guidelines. Those updates appear in the 2019 version of the NCCN Guidelines. This article discusses the history of chaplaincy involvement in the NCCN Guidelines for Distress Management and the precedent it set for the integration of chaplaincy in other efforts that followed. Integration of this section of the Guidelines into the spiritual care practice at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is presented as an example of how these guidelines can be put into practice to improve patient care. Finally, a summary of the recent research by Drs. Kenneth Pargament and Julie Exline is presented as the foundation for the revised chaplain assessment categories and interventions.
BACKGROUND:Precision interventions using biological data may enhance smoking treatment, yet are understudied among smokers who are disproportionately burdened by smoking-related disease. METHODS:We surveyed smokers in the NCI-sponsored Southern Community Cohort Study, consisting primarily of African-American, low-income adults. Seven items assessed attitudes toward aspects of precision smoking treatment, from undergoing tests to acting on results. Items were dichotomized as favorable (5 = strongly agree/4 = agree) versus less favorable (1 = strongly disagree/2 = disagree/3 = neutral); a summary score reflecting generalized attitudes was also computed. Multivariable logistic regression tested independent associations of motivation (precontemplation, contemplation, and preparation) and confidence in quitting (low, medium, and high) with generalized attitudes, controlling for sociodemographic factors and nicotine dependence. RESULTS:More than 70% of respondents endorsed favorable generalized attitudes toward precision medicine, with individual item favorability ranging from 64% to 83%. Smokers holding favorable generalized attitudes reported higher income and education (P < 0.05). Predicted probabilities of favorable generalized attitudes ranged from 63% to 75% across motivation levels [contemplation vs. precontemplation: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.10, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.36-3.25, P = 0.001; preparation vs. precontemplation: AOR = 1.83, 95% CI, 1.20-2.78, P = 0.005; contemplation vs. preparation: AOR = 1.15, 95% CI, 0.75-1.77, P = 0.52] and from 59% to 78% across confidence (medium vs. low: AOR = 1.91, 95% CI, 1.19-3.07, P = 0.007; high vs. low: AOR = 2.62, 95% CI, 1.68-4.10, P < 0.001; medium vs. high: AOR = 0.73, 95% CI, 0.48-1.11, P = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS:Among disproportionately burdened community smokers, most hold favorable attitudes toward precision smoking treatment. Individuals with lower motivation and confidence to quit may benefit from additional intervention to engage with precision smoking treatment. IMPACT:Predominantly favorable attitudes toward precision smoking treatment suggest promise for future research testing their effectiveness and implementation.
Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are used in efforts to reduce health disparities; however, there is little documentation in the literature regarding their use in precision medicine research. In this case study, an academic-CAB partnership developed a questionnaire and patient educational materials for two precision smoking cessation interventions that involved use of genetic or genetically-informed information. The community-engaged research (CEnR) literature provided a framework for enhancing benefits to CAB members involved in developing research documents for use with a low-income, ethnically diverse population of smokers.The academic partners integrated three CEnR strategies: 1) in-meeting statements acknowledging their desire to learn from community partners, 2) in-meeting written feedback to and from community partners, and 3) a survey to obtain CAB member feedback post-meetings. Strategies 1 and 2 yielded modifications to pertinent study materials, as well as suggestions for improving meeting operations that were then adopted, as appropriate, by the academic partners. The survey indicated that CAB members valued the meeting procedure changes which appeared to have contributed to improvements in attendance and satisfaction with the meetings. Further operationalization of relevant partnership constructs and development of tools for measuring these aspects of community-academic partnerships is warranted to support community engagement in precision medicine research studies.
Introduction Varenicline doubles cessation over nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) patch for "normal," but not "slow," nicotine metabolizers, as assessed by the nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR). Metabolism-informed care (MIC) could improve outcomes by matching normal metabolizers with non-nicotine medication (e.g., varenicline) and slow metabolizers with NRT patch. Methods We conducted a feasibility randomized controlled trial of MIC versus guideline based care (GBC) among 81 outpatient adult daily smokers with medical comorbidity. Participants reported perceptions of MIC, underwent blood draw for NMR, and received expert cessation counseling. For MIC participants, medication selection was informed by NMR result (normal (≥0.31) vs. slow (< 0.31)). The primary outcome was MIC feasibility, reflected by attitudes toward MIC and by match rates between NMR and medication. Secondary endpoints (cessation confidence, medication use, smoking status) were assessed over 6 months to inform future studies. Results Participants were median age 53 years, 46% female, 28% black, and ~90% endorsed MIC. Despite high varenicline prescription rates (~60%) in both arms, NMR-medication matching was higher in MIC (84%) versus GBC (58%) participants (p=0.02); unadjusted odds ratio (OR) 3.67, 95% confidence interval [1.33, 11.00; p-value=0.02]. Secondary endpoints were similar at 1, 3, and 6 months. Conclusions MIC, an NMR-based precision approach to smoking cessation, was acceptable to 90% of smokers and improved NMR-medication match rates more than 3-fold compared to GBC, even with generally high use of varenicline. These data support the feasibility of MIC, which could maximize efficacy of smoking cessation medication while minimizing side effects and cost. Implications Among treatment-seeking daily smokers with medical comorbidity, most viewed metabolism-informed care (MIC), guided by the nicotine metabolism ratio (NMR), favorably, and were willing to accept MIC-guided medication. Compared to GBC participants (58%), more MIC participants (84%) were prescribed NMR-matched medication (i.e., normal metabolizers received varenicline; slow metabolizers received NRT patch). MIC increased the odds of optimized matching between NMR and medication more than 3-fold over GBC. Because the number needed to treat (NNT) to help one normal metabolizer quit smoking is only 4.9 for varenicline versus 26 for patch, broad implementation of MIC will improve drug efficacy in normal metabolizers as well as minimize side effects in slow metabolizers.
Spiritual issues play a prominent role for patients with cancer. Studies have demonstrated a positive connection between a patient's spirituality and health outcomes, including quality of life, depression and anxiety, hopefulness, and the ability to cope with illness. Spiritual or existential distress is prominent in patients with cancer. Models are described that identify ways for clinicians to identify or diagnose spiritual or existential distress, and to attend to that distress. It is critical that all clinicians assess for spiritual distress as part of a routine distress assessment, identify appropriate treatment strategies, and work closely with trained spiritual care professionals.
This study describes the prevalence of religious or spiritual (R/S) struggle in long‐term survivors after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), demographic and medical correlates of R/S struggle, and its associations with depression and quality of life.
Effective deployment of limited spiritual care resources requires valid and reliable methods of screening that can be used by nonchaplain health care professionals to identify and refer patients with potential religious/spiritual (R/S) need. Research regarding the validity of existing approaches to R/S screening is limited. In a sample of 1,399 hematopoietic stem cell transplant survivors, we tested the validity of the Rush Protocol and two alternative versions of it. The negative religious coping subscale of the Brief RCOPE provided the reference standard. Based on the Protocol, 21.9% of the survivors were identified as having potential R/S struggle. The sensitivity of the Protocol was low (42.1%) and the specificity was marginally acceptable (81.3%). The sensitivity and specificity of the two alternative versions were similar to those for the unmodified Protocol. Further research with the Rush Protocol, and other models, should be pursued to develop the best evidence-based approaches to R/S screening.
Smoking is a well-known risk factor for disease severity and complications in Crohn’s disease (CD). Despite being identified as a quality measure, little has been studied on promoting smoking cessation in CD. We recently showed that providing nicotine replacement (NRT) in the IBD clinic was effective but limited by low rates of participation. The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR) is a biomarker of nicotine metabolism that predicts odds of cessation and response to varenicline. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of and engagement in a personalized smoking cessation program using NMR in an IBD clinic.
Purpose: This study describes the prevalence of religious and/or spiritual (R/S) struggle in long-term young adult (YA) survivors following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) as well as existential concerns (EC), social support, and demographic, medical, and emotional correlates of R/S struggle. Methods: Data were collected as part of an annual survey of survivors of HCT aged 18-39 years at survey completion; age at HCT was 1-39 years. Study measures included measures of R/S struggle (defined as any non-zero response on the negative religious coping subscale from Brief RCOPE), quality of life (QOL), and depression. Factors associated with R/S struggle were identified using multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Fifty-two of the 172 respondents (30%), who ranged from less than a year to 33 years after HCT, had some R/S struggle. In bivariate analysis, depression was associated with R/S struggle. In a multivariable logistic regression model, individuals with greater EC were nearly five times more likely to report R/S struggle. R/S struggle was not associated with age at transplant, time since transplant, gender, race, R/S self-identification, or medical variables. Conclusion: R/S struggle is common among YA HCT survivors, even many years after HCT. There is a strong correlation between EC and R/S struggle. Given the prevalence of R/S struggle and its associations with EC, survivors should be screened and referred to professionals with expertise in EC and R/S struggle as appropriate. Further study is needed to determine longitudinal trajectory, impact of struggle intensity, causal relationships, and effects of R/S struggle on health, mood, and QOL for YA HCT survivors.
134 Background: Addressing distress in cancer patients is now broadly recognized as critical to well-being and associated with increased survival. Cancer centers are developing innovative distress screening methods; we describe our novel process and results. Methods: New patients from 9/2015 to 3/2017 received an email requesting completion of a 44-item web-based survey assessing depression (2-item Patient Health Questionnaire), anxiety (2-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder), quality of life (QOL, 28-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment-General), malnutrition (3-item Malnutrition Screening Tool), and 9 items addressing existential crisis, physical function, symptoms, tangible needs and concerns for dependent children. Results were computer scored, with positive screens resulting in direct, automated referrals to supportive care services (SCR). Analysis includes descriptive statistics and logistic regression using SAS 9.4. Results: 71% (n = 2629 of 3724) of those approached provided an email and completed the survey; 73% reporting no survey burden. Non-responders were more likely to be minority, non-English speaking, with non-commercial insurance (all p < 0.001). 59% (n = 1543) of responders screened positive for one or more SCR, including 6% to palliative care for poor QOL or symptoms. Receipt of SCR was more likely with Medicaid insurance (1.36 odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.76, p = .0061); plan to receive care (1.27 OR, CI 1.07-1.50, p = .0061); and any report of survey burden (2.26 OR, CI 1.83-2.80, p < .0001). Conclusions: Web-based distress screening is feasible, efficient and not burdensome for the majority of cancer patients. Those who find this screening burdensome are two-fold more likely to have distress. Future efforts should address screening of vulnerable populations.
This study sought to validate for the first time a brief screening measure for religious/spiritual (R/S) distress given the Commission on Cancer’s mandated screening for psychosocial distress including spiritual distress.
An online survey was conducted by twelve professional chaplain organizations to assess chaplains' attitudes about and involvement in research. A total of 2,092 chaplains from 23 countries responded to the survey. Over 80% thought research was definitely important and nearly 70% thought chaplains should definitely be research literate. Just over 40% said they regularly read research articles and almost 60% said they occasionally did. The respondents rated their own research literacy as 6.5 on a 0-10 scale. Significant positive inter-correlations were found among all four measures: importance of (a) research and (b) research literacy; (c) frequency of reading articles; and (d) research literacy rating. Approximately 35% were never involved, 37% had been involved, 17% were currently involved, and 11% expected to be involved in research. The last three groups were significantly more likely to think research and research literacy were important and to read research articles than chaplains who were never involved in research. Given chaplains' interest in research, actions should be undertaken to facilitate further research engagement.
