The demand on high rate multimedia information has pushed the development of wireless communication systems in an unprecedented pace. System design of fourth generation (4G) technology has already begun, which seeks to support a wide range of services with highest data rates reaching 20Mbps. OFDM is an important candidate technique for the future wireless transmission. It is a multicarrier modulation and access technique which can support high data rates and perform well in wireless environment. However this can be ensured only through good scheduling algorithm to allocate the common resources. The problem is to allocate resources among users fairly. In this paper Minimum Normalized Transmit Rate Based Fair Scheduling Algorithms based on Throughput is discussed also the performance of this algorithm is evaluated through simulation results.
A 73-year-old man with thalassemia intermedia presented acutely with abdominal pain and distension. He had previously undergone a splenectomy. A diagnostic computed tomography (CT) scan through the abdomen and pelvis was performed with oral and intravenous contrast. This showed bilateral paravertebral and retrocrural soft tissue masses. It was believed that this was unlikely to be the cause of the patient's acute presentation. Nevertheless, the possibility of lymphoma or extramedullary hematopoiesis was raised. To avoid an invasive diagnostic biopsy, a Tc-99m sulfur colloid scan was performed. Initially, planar images were obtained; however, no clear corresponding colloid uptake was demonstrated. Therefore, a single-photon computed emission tomography (SPECT)/CT examination was performed. This demonstrated uptake of Tc-99m sulfur colloid in the paravertebral masses, confirming that these are likely to represent extramedullary hematopoiesis rather than lymphoma.
National Informatics Centre had established a subject repository in May 2005. It is meant for Medical and Allied Sciences and named as OpenMED@NIC <http://openmed.nic.in>. It has MeSH® based subject categorization and this makes it one of its own kind. Taking OpenMED@NIC as a case - this paper discusses key issues in establishing and maintaining an open access repository. Librarians and information science professionals can play active role in providing access and exposure to quality research and academic content generated in their institutions. Mature and standard open sources softwares are now available for setting up repositories. Libraries can install one of these on existing institutional or library servers to setup repositories. However to ensure better access and faster response time dedicated hardware and reliable connectivity would be required. Librarians and information science professional can play important role in exposing intellectual content produced by their organizations. They can take of various roles like - generating awareness among staff, researchers and students about benefits of self arching in institutional or subject repositories; training them in uploading their articles and other documents in such repositories; acting as meta-data editors and repositories managers. Establishing a repository, administrating and inviting authors to deposit their articles and other works in it is golden opportunity available to librarians and information science professionals. This opportunity should be grabbed with open hands.
An 80-year-old woman presented with a history of right flank pain and tenderness. Her white cell count and C-reactive protein were elevated at 12.3 × 109/L and 108 mg/L respectively. An ultrasound scan of the abdomen showed moderate right sided hydronephrosis without ureteric dilatation and a collection at the lower pole of the kidney. An isotope renogram was performed using Tc-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) to assess the presence of renal obstruction and to look for evidence of a urinary leak. Planar images revealed partial obstruction of the right kidney and unusual accumulation of tracer inferior to the kidney. SPECT/CT was performed to further evaluate the location of the abnormal tracer accumulation. Fused images demonstrated a posterior perirenal urinoma due to rupture of the collecting system. The patient underwent retrograde ureteric stenting and made an uneventful recovery.
Journals have been at the forefront of digital preservation as of their critical role in scientific communication. The paper presents procedure for digitizing Indian biomedical journals 'medIND' to ensure the long-term preservation and access to electronic journals for medical paternity.
ICMR-NIC Centre for Biomedical Information has developed various products that are available over Internet. These includes: i. UNcat (http://uncat.nic.in) - union catalogue of journal holdings of medical libraries of India; ii. IndMED (http://indmed.nic.in) - A bibliographic database of Indian biomedical journals and iii. medIND (http://medind.nic.in) - full texts of Indian biomedical journals being indexed in IndMED. Now, having these services, tools, databases and content in operation, the focus of future activities would be to integrate these "ingredients" both internally and externally to provide "single window digital access persistently". Here we propose an architecture under which each service, tool, database and content collection is an independent layer. These layers are the building blocks of Digital Library (DL) and can interoperate with each other due to either build-in or plug-in(ed) interoperability. They are accessible by their own interfaces as well as through Digital Library interface. In context of the proposed architecture, this article also takes stoke of what is available and what is required to build the digital library. Background In 1986, National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) jointly set up a centre called ICMR-NIC Centre for Biomedical Information. This Centre was recognized as the 17th International MEDLARS Centre in 1990 and now is well known as Indian Medlars Centre (IMC). Nutritional assessments were performed in three groups of hospitalized elderly women comparable in age and mobility: a group with Alzheimer's disease (ALZ), a multi-infarct dementia group (MID) and a nondemented group (ND). We have shown that: ALZ patients lose weight and on average weigh 21% less than ND patients and 14% less than MID patients. This weight loss is not accounted for by any obvious deficit in food intake, or by malabsorption. Biochemical indices of nutrition are little different in the three groups. The reason for weight loss in ALZ remains uncertain.
