Technical documents such as historical patents are important cultural assets and part of our cultural and historical heritage. The Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin is an archive with thousands of historic Prussian patents from the 19th century. These are examples of the beginning of the German industrialization. The documents cover patent drawings and descriptions as well as comments from the patent examiners. This paper is about first common activities of the Berlin state archive and the Technische Universität Ilmenau to make the documents available to a broad public. Aside from the digital reproduction and presentation of texts and images the activities focus on remodeling the technical devices and animation of models with WebGL in web browsers. In the created interactive animations different functional and constructive aspects can be explained to the viewers. The original content as well as the derived content like videos and interactive animations is finally made available in the open access portal Digital Mechanism and Gear Library ( www.dmg-lib.org ). This paper describes the used work-flow and experiences showing selected examples.
This paper describes the Thesaurus Concept Editor (Thedi) implemented as a part of the Digital Mechanism and Gear Library (DMG-Lib), a digital library containing information about mechanisms and gears. Thedi is introduced as new working environment for the IFToMM Permanent Commission (PC) for Standardization of Terminology. This allows the PC to work more effective and comprehensible on the IFToMM dictionary [1]. From the user’s point of view the new possibilities concerning the support of more than four languages, the links to occurrences and the shorter release cycles (or even instant updates) make the IFToMM dictionary more valuable.
Over the years the IFToMM dictionary has been grown up to a comprehensive digital resource which can be used as dictionary, thesaurus, taxonomy as well as glossary in several languages in parallel. Regarding today's needs of information retrieval in digital libraries it makes sense to see the IFToMM-terminology dataset as an expandable semantic network which can be used to solve different retrieval problems in digital libraries providing content on mechanisms and machine science and to support the understanding of foreign language information in this field. The article presents the DMG-Lib as such a digital library and shows, how the content of the IFToMM dictionary can be used to improve the retrieval process. Furthermore the implementation of applications is discussed, e.g. how the IFToMM dictionary content can be extended and how the maintenance process of the IFToMM dictionary can be supported by online tools.
eleed, Iss. 8 - Motion systems are important parts of technical products. Those are mostly composed of mechanisms and gears. Today mechanism and gear technology is essential for the whole industry and it will become even more important due to the introduction of new technologies and respective new fields of applications.
In today’s information society large collections of data arise by the digitization of various content sources. For example, the DMG-Lib, a digital library to collect, preserve and present the knowledge of mechanism and gear science, contains a wide range of digitized information resources in very heterogeneous media types. A main issue of all these collections is to make their contents available for new users in an adequate way. In case of DMG-Lib, the resources are enriched with various additional information like animations and simulations. Combined with innovative multimedia applications and a semantic information retrieval environment, the DMG-Lib provides an efficient access to this knowledge space of mechanism and gear science, for both experts and laymen.
End of 2010 the EU started the European project thinkMOTION, whose main goal is the Internet-based providing of information on motion systems for a wide range of users. The content to be collected within the project ranges from historical resources to the latest research results. In doing so, various information sources, such as books, patents, articles, physical models, etc., are digitized, processed and published on the Internet in form of text documents, images, interactive animations, videos, and formalized descriptions of design solutions. From a technical point of view the work in the thinkMOTION project is based on the results of the now established Digital Mechanism and Gear Library (www.dmg lib.org). The proven DMG-Lib workflow and the proven DMG-Lib tools were adapted to the requirements of a distributed working on European level. The resulting content of thinkMOTION are collected on the DMG-Lib platform and presented in different ways. It is important that the DMG-Lib content will be accessible through the Europeana portal, which already includes as the central European Metaportal millions of digitized objects. Besides a brief introduction to the thinkMOTION project, the following sections focus on key aspects of the used workflow, the rights clarification, the creating of a work environment for library users and the issue of searching/browsing as well as multilingualism.
The most important aim of the IFToMM is "to promote research and development in the field of Machines and Mechanisms by theoretical and experimental methods, along with their practical application" (see article 2.1 of the statutes [12]). This is strongly connected with access to current knowledge, experience and skills in the field of mechanism and machine science (resp. motion science). However this content is characterized by a high diversity and heterogeneity, because it is mostly scattered, represented in different forms (physical model, drawings, textbooks etc.), languages and mediums. Therefore there is a need to establish an open access, multilingual digital library in this field of techno-cultural heritage.Against this background, members of three IFToMM-Commissions initiated a joint project called thinkMOTION. In this project, which promotes the idea of open access, the techno-cultural heritage and the current developments in motion science will be widely accessible via Europeana, which is the search platform for European digital libraries initiated by the European Commission. The content is useful for a wide range of user groups, such as interested laymen, engineers, scientists, lecturers, pupils, students all over the world, in that it opens new possibilities in multilingual searching, browsing and using of information sources.
Solutions for most present-day problems in the field of motion systems can be derived from existing designs. Unfortunately, large portions of this knowledge are difficult to access, since it is scattered over the world's libraries, museums, companies, universities, and other institutions. Also, it is stored in various forms, like textual descriptions, images, or diagrams. In recent years there have been efforts to digitalize sources of design solutions and make them available on the Internet. However, most of these repositories represent information in a way that does not meet the requirements of engineering designers concerning the retrieval of specific solutions.Furthermore, the presented paper shows the importance of design solution repositories and discusses methods and tools necessary to extract design solutions from sources and to describe them with metadata based on terms and concepts of motion science. These steps are important since they form essential prerequisites to allow target-oriented retrieval of solutions.
1 ABSTRACT Over the years the IFToMM dictionaries have been grown up to a comprehensive digital resource which can be used as dictionary as well as glossary with four languages in parallel. Regarding today’s needs of information retrieval in digital libraries it makes sense to see the IFToMM-terminology dataset as a semantic network which can be used to solve different retrieval problems in digital libraries providing content on mechanisms and machine science. The article presents the DMGLib as such a digital library and shows, how the content of the IFToMM dictionaries can be used to improve the retrieval process. Furthermore suggestions are made, how the IFToMM dictionaries could be extended to be more powerful and how the generation and maintenance process of the IFToMM dictionaries could be supported by online tools.
Solutions for many present-day problems in the field of motion systems can be derived from historical knowledge. Unfortunately, large portions of this knowledge are difficult to access, since it is scattered over the world's libraries, museums, companies, universities, and other institutions. Also, it is stored in various forms, like textual descriptions, images, or diagrams. In recent years there have been efforts to digitalize sources of historical knowledge and make them available on the Internet. However, most of these repositories represent information in a way that does not meet the requirements of engineering designers concerning the retrieval of specific solutions. The presented paper discusses methods and tools necessary to extract solutions from sources and to describe them with metadata based on terms and concepts of motion science.
In the past it was often adequate to assemble an overall system from separately developed and optimized Forts. However, recent developments in engineering show the need to integrate mechanical, optical, electrical, electronical and software components. This new quality of interdisciplinary collaboration requires new computer-aided, phase- and domain-spanning tools for modeling, analysis, simulation and optimization of complex design objects particularly in the early phases of product development:. The article covers the first intermediate results of the ongoing research concerning a phase-overlapping design software tool for heterogeneous systems that supports the transition from the solution principle to embodiment design. Finally more general remarks, theses and questions concerning procedures, methods and tools for a domain-spanning and phase-overlapping design arc presented to encourage a discussion. These thoughts base mostly on common statements and views in german literature.
We are presenting a digital engineering library – the Digital Mechanism and Gear Library (DMG-Lib). The existing worldwide knowledge in form of books, drawings, physical models etc. is mostly scattered, difficult to access and does not comply with today’s requirements concerning a rapid information retrieval. Therefore the development of a digital, internet-based library for mechanisms and gears is necessary, which makes the worldwide knowledge about mechanisms and gears available: http://www.dmg-lib.org. The Digital Mechanism and Gear Library is of particular importance not only for engineers, product designers and researchers, but also for teachers, students and historians.

He published an extensive scientific work which contains 13 books and more than 380 papers on nearly all partial fields of kinematics. The paper gives a survey of the lifework of Kurt Hain and describes a national research project to store and to provide his heritage for all people who are interested in kinematics.
