The purpose of the present study is to investigate anticancer efficacy and apoptosis confirmed by caspase under several exposure conditions of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
Contamination of yessotoxin (YTX) and its analogs in shellfish has occurred worldwide and has seriously damaged shellfish industries. One of the sources of YTX has been identified the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum. A new analog of YTX, 45,46,47-trinorhomoYTX, was isolated from cultures of the dinoflagellate P. reticulatum collected at Yamada Bay, Iwate in Japan. Its structure was determined by analysis of MS and NMR experiments. This is the first isolation and confirmation of a homoYTX analog in Japan.
PURPOSE:To evaluate the feasibility of enhanced sonography using arterial injection of pure carbon dioxide gas (CO(2)) for detecting small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nodules.MATERIALS AND METHODS:We performed enhanced sonography on 51 HCC nodules of 35 patients with HCC. The patients underwent enhanced sonography with two methods: injection of pure CO(2) (26 nodules), or injection of CO(2) microbubbles (25 nodules) using CO(2) and soy bean oil. We observed the enhancement effect of HCC on enhanced sonography, and measured the accumulation time of CO(2) in the nodules.RESULTS:Twenty-three nodules appeared hyperechoic on enhanced sonography, and 12 of the nodules could be found on enhanced sonography only. Sixteen of the hyperechoic nodules on baseline sonography revealed no enhancement. Multiple regression analysis with regard to the method of injection of CO(2), nodule location, and nodule size revealed that method (p<0.0001) and nodule size (p=0.02) remained significant. The accumulation time of CO(2) microbubbles in the nodules was 4.4+/-0.8 minutes, whereas pure CO(2) accumulation time was 14.7+/-1.5 minutes, significantly longer than the CO(2) microbubbles regardless of nodule size and location.CONCLUSION:Enhanced sonography of arterial injection of pure CO(2) is a feasible technique for detecting small HCC nodules.

Two different strains of the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum collected at Harima Nada and Yamada Bay in Japan were cultured and analyzed by fluorometric HPLC for yessotoxin production. Only the Yamada Bay strain produced yessotoxin. The toxin together with its analog, 45,46,47-trinoryessotoxin, were isolated from larger scale culture and unambiguously confirmed by (1)H NMR and MS measurements. This is the first confirmation of the biogenetic origin of yessotoxin in Japan, where the toxin was first reported. The results also indicate that the production of yessotoxins by P. reticulatum differs from strain to strain, in a similar way to that observed in many other toxigenic dinoflagellates such as Dinophysis spp. and Alexandrium spp.
Our results shows molecular markers, particularly TAT, is useful for early detection of thrombus formation in the false lumen in acute aortic dissection.

IT is noteworthy that some analcite-bearing diabase has already been collected by Mr. Y. Deguchi from the Pescadoles Islands and the distribution of the same kind of rock was also noticed by Dr. B. Kotō in the Taihoku district many years ago. Little is known of the occurrence of alkaline rocks in Formosa, for the investigation of these rocks has not been carried out by any geologist. When the writer moved to Formosa, his attention was especially attracted to these rocks, both petrologically and geologically. The work was begun three years ago when he first found very interesting specimens of analcite-bearing rocks at Rokkutsu and published some brief notes thereupon. The present paper embodies further study of analcite-bearing rocks from Rokkutsu.
