Introduction: According to the WHO (January 7, 2022), cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide among women of childbearing age.However, cervical cancer is highly preventable and treatable due to its well-known disease history which goes through several detectable pre-cancerous phases with available treatments.There are very few data on the prevalence of dysplastic lesions of the cervix in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Panzi General Referral Hospital is a care center for women with genital prolapse, and our study aimed to determine the prevalence of dysplastic lesions of the cervix in this particular population.Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study of all women aged ≥ 18 years who consulted at the HGR Panzi from September 01 to December 31, 2022, diagnosed with uterine prolapse and who consented to the study.Results: The mean (±SD) age of the patients was 47.44 (±14.42) years and the majority (67.7%) of them were aged 40 and over.For all of the respondents, the Pap smear was normal in 62.6% and inflammatory in 2% of cases, while cytological abnormalities, which were found in 35.4% of cases, including 12.1% of lesions high-grade dysplastic (HSIL), i.e. 12 out of a total of 99 women examined.Conclusion: Women with uterine prolapse are twice as likely to develop dysplastic lesions as the general female population.A screening and management program for these lesions is essential in our preoperative protocol at the HGR Panzi and at the national level in general.
Background: In DR Congo, South Kivu is among the cities most affected by COVID-19 with its dense population and common mass movement. This study aimed to investigate the population behavior and practices during the spread period of Corona in South Kivu, East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Subjects dan Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was undertaken in South Kivu province and included 800 hundred individuals. The survey questionnaire was designed and comprised information on independent variables including socio-demographic and socioeconomic parameters, travel history of individuals, and person's history of COVID-19 comorbidity factors. These data were used to explain the dependent variable which was the population behavior and practices which was linked to the COVID-19 positivity or negativity. A rapid test of the COVID-19 antigen for people suspected of having cough and fever followed by RT-PCR tests was conducted. Statistical analyses were performed under R, version 3.5.1. Results: Results indicate three categories of people depending on their behavior and practices during the COVID-19. These include the negative group, those who contracted the disease and knew their serological status, and those who did not know their serological status. The behavior of these categories varied with age, education level, income, and their geographical location. Variable behaviors have been adopted, including lack of action, prayer, self-medication, lifestyle change, and change in feeding. Efforts to control the spread of the disease entailed two most commonly used barriers: wearing a mask (95%) and frequent hand washing (94%). In the COVID-19 infected category, type 1 individuals developed the most characteristic symptoms of COVID-19, mainly cough, asthenia, fever, and headache. Types 2 and 3 individuals were less likely to engage in any of the behaviors associated with COVID-19 because they have fewer comorbidities and have developed fewer of the symptoms characteristic of COVID-19. Conclusion: Education level and socioeconomic conditions are among the factors to be considered in pandemic control strategies. Keywords: Typology, SARS, comorbidity, population believe. Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains the most common cause of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.The objective of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity and predictive value of the HPV test associated with the cervico-uterine smear in the screening of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in our environment.Methodology: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of 625 women who consulted in the department of gynecology for cervical cancer screening, of whom 300 received an HPV test; during the period from January the 1st to December 31st, 2018 at Panzi general reference hospital (South-Kivu, DRC).Data analysis was done using Epi Info version 7 software.Results: For all respondents (n = 625), the cervico-uterine smear was normal in 82.88%, inflammatory in 2.4% of cases and with cellular atypia in 14.72%.The HPV test was positive in 87 respondents against 213 negatives cases, i.e. a prevalence of HPV of 29% [95% CI: 23.9% -34.5%].Among women with precancerous lesions, 27.6% had HPV infection; among those with normal smears, 29.3% of them had HPV infection; however, this difference was not statistically significant.Patients with dysplastic lesions, 31.3% had genotypes with very high carcinogenic potential; and for those with a normal Pap smear, 45.1% had genotypes with very high carcinogenic potential; however, this difference was also not statistically significant.Conclusion: The human papillomavirus test remains a very important indication
Introduction: Thanks to the opening of the digestive endoscopy unit in the Reference General Hospital of Panzi in Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which inspired our work on the profile of endoscopic lesions observed in a series of 1000 patients correlated with clinical and demographic criteria with the contribution of pathology examinations of the 292 biopsies performed. The aim of our work is to evaluate the prevalence of significant endoscopic lesions as well as that of H. pylori infection. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study, ranging from the 16th of December 2014 to the 16th of June 2016. It covered 1000 patients who benefited from a high digestive endoscopy and 292 of them had a biopsy with pathological examination. The data obtained were recorded and analyzed using the Epi-info software and chi-square test. Results: fifty-five percent of these patients were women. 66% of the patients were under 50 years of age. Their major symptom was epigastric pain (89.2%), the most observed endoscopic lesion was erythematous gastritis (82%) therefore we have noticed 21.5% of significant lesions. Gastric cancer was present in 3.9% of cases and gastric ulcer in 4.2% of cases. The gastric tumor was correlated with age and sex (P-value at 0.000 and 0.013). The gastroduodenal ulcer was linked to age, NSAID and tobacco use (P-value at 0.0007, 0.001, 0.007). Esophageal mycosis was correlated with HIV status (P-value at 0.000). Helicobacter pylori gastritis was the most frequent (61.30%) and Helicobacter pylori were present in 63% of gastric biopsies. Conclusion: Upper digestive endoscopy is a major tool for the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disorders and should always be followed by a biopsy if there is a suspicious lesion for pathologic confirmation and adequate management.
Introduction:The human papillomavirus represents the main cause of cervical cancer, pathology whose incidence remains high in the Democratic Republic of Congo.The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and the types of carcinogenic HPV circulating in our environment.Methodology: This is an analytical cross-sectional study conducted in women followed in gynecological consultation for cervical cancer screening during the period from January 1 to December 31, 2018 at the GRH of Panzi (South Kivu, DRC).The data analysis was done using Epi Info version 7 software.Results: The HPV test was positive in 87 respondents against 213 negative cases, representing a prevalence of HPV of 29%.Of the women with dysplastic lesions, 27.6% had HPV infection and 31.3% had genotypes with high carcinogenic potential; and among those in whom the smear was normal, 29.3% had an HPV infection and 45.1% had genotypes with high carcinogenic potential.Genotype 31 was the most common (28.7%); 37 of our respondents had genotypes with high carcinogenic potential, a prevalence of 42.5%, against 57.50% of cases of genotypes with low carcinogenic potential.Conclusion: The prevalence of human papillomavirus infection remains high in the population of South Kivu.Adopting an effective vaccination policy therefore appears to be an alternative to minimize the consequences linked to human papillomaviruses.
Introduction: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers and takes the second place among women's cancers in terms of incidence and the first place in terms of breast cancer mortality. Its incidence and mortality are significantly increased in patients living with HIV / AIDS. The purpose of this work is to describe the cytopathological and molecular aspects of cervical dysplasia in HIV-positive women in our environment and to look for some associated factors, in particular the degree of immunosuppression and the clinical stage. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study of cervical-uterine smears (n = 111) and human papillomavirus genotyping (n = 73) in HIV-infected patients received from January 2018 to December 2018 at Panzi GRH (South Kivu, DR Congo). The data analysis was done using SPSS statistics 20 software. Results: The average age of the patients was 42.25 ± 10.42 years. The cervical-uterine smear (CUS) was normal in 82.9% of cases and cytological abnormalities were found in 13.5% of cases. The majority of patients were in WHO stages I (45.9%) and II (45.0%) of HIV infection and had a CD4 count greater than 500 cells / mm3 in 47.9% of patients. Among the 73 patients who had been tested for HPV infection, 35 (47.9%) were positive. The most common carcinogenic genotype among HPV positive patients was 18-45 (17.1%). There was not a significant difference in carcinogenic genotypes and intraepithelial lesions as a function of WHO clinical stages (p = 0.3819 and p = 0.7945). Conclusion: The coexistence between HIV and HPV infections seems to be strongly associated with the occurrence of cervical cytological abnormalities in our sample study. Hence the need, on the one hand, for a national policy for early detection of cervical cancer in all patients living with HIV / AIDS, and on the other hand, for deepened studies at the international level for the tuning of a plurigenic vaccine containing all oncogenic genotypes, those one that are geographically widespread (genotypes 16 and 18) are not more common to HIV-positive patients in our study environment
