Inthis paperwepresent astudy inwhich weexplore thepotential useofsocial tagging inproviding access to large information systems. Tagsareuser-supplied access points forinformation resources [1], e.g., short labels that characterize pieces ofinformation. Aspartoflongtermresearch efforts toassess theusefulness oftags for retrieving content fromlarge information spaces, weset upafirst experiment inwhichweinvestigate thetags people assign tocontent. Wechose aTV-guide that offers recommendations touserson interesting programs according totheir tastes tobeourcase. Participants were asked totaganumber ofTVprograms. Theywerealso asked togive arating fortheprogram. Theresults showa variety oftags. Wecomposed acategory scheme ofthese tags, which onahighlevel distinguishes between attitude tags, content tags, andself-reference tags. Tagsthat reflect thegenre, theparticipant's opinion, andthe program's characteristics wereassigned mostoften. Surprisingly, norelationship wasfoundbetween attitude tagsandtherating participants haveassigned tothe program. Wefeel that theresults canbegeneralized to other settings suchasthefield ofdocument design and technical communication, including instructional texts.
Past communication and computing trends are inadequate to deal with today's complex, dis- tributed, and diverse network environments. With the recent development of small-size teth- erless communication/computing devices and the increasing diversity in their capabilities, auto- nomic ubiquitous communication environments are emerging. In such environments, the execu- tion of a complex task does not necessarily make use of prconfigured devices or networks, but requires instead the selection of suitable com- puting elements on-the-fly, based on the task requirements and device characteristics (i.e., net- working-on-demand or task-centric networking). Research is currently being carried out in vari- ous dimensions in this emerging domain, includ- ing, among other approaches for context awareness, service discovery and self-manage- ment. In this article we concentrate on propos- ing a distributed mechanism for discovering suitable service elements on-the-fly.
The term knowledge work has been used for decades, but to date there is not much understanding what knowledge workers do and how this work can be improved. This paper contributes to the development of our theoretical understanding of knowledge work by exploring use of weblogs for professional purposes: as personal knowledge repositories, learning journals or networking instruments. We draw on the results of a weblog adoption study to explore knowledge worker activities and to propose a framework for analysing knowledge work.
Electronic business offers possibilities for intermediaries but often the promises do not live up to the expectation. The voluntary acceptance of electronic business by its customers and suppliers may not be as straightforward as sometimes suggested and may be more complex than general prescriptions like ‘everyone must benefit’. An important means for intermediaries to create acceptance is exchange design: the way in which an intermediary solves the problems of supply and demand in the business network. We focus upon how an intermediary can balance the interests of all actors in the business network with respect to the exchange design. Based upon a case study in the soft furnishing industry we discuss three exchange design issues and their effects upon the interests of customers, intermediary, and suppliers. The issues are the managed marketplace, the partially transparent marketplace, and the combination of new and traditional elements.
Abstract. After taking the Internet by storm, Instant Messaging applications are now beginning,to appear,in the workplace,and,on mobile,devices. A key feature of these applications is continuous,provision of information,about the presence,and,availability of others. This allows users to decide with whom, when, where and how to make contact, in ways similar to when they would have been co-located. For mobile knowledge workers, this technology promises not only to improve reachability and availability, but also to reduce the amount of inconvenient interruptions. Inspired by this, in our research we explore,which,context,information,is instrumental,for the communication,of mobile knowledge workers and their contacts. In this paper, we describe the results of empirical research,into,communication,behaviour,of,(mobile) knowledge,workers,in two organisations.,We,also,describe,the,results of an,interaction,design,session,with knowledge workers in these organisations. Use of Presence and Instant Messaging (PIM) applications has grown very rapidly recently, not only at home, but also at work. Early studies on the use of PIM applications in the workplace, however, indicate that PIM applications need to be adapted towards the workplace context. In our research, we explore such adaptations, towards place-based presence systems, i.e., presence systems that are not only able to answer people-oriented presence queries such as "Who is online?" next to place-oriented presence queries, such as "Who is near?". In this paper, we describe a design space for place-based presence systems, in which we identify the most important aspects and options that designers of place-based presence systems need to consider. We also report on our exploratory research in this design space, comprising two cycles of designing, implementing and evaluating place-based presence prototypes. We conclude with lessons learned for future research in place-based presence systems.
The appearance of networked enterprises, in which Internet-enabled organisations work together for mutual benefit, gives rise to a change in the nature of enterprise computing. Enterprise computing today has to deal with application integration across company boundaries and support inter-organisational business processes, collaborations and transactions. It has always been important first to understand the business environment in which enterprise systems are supposed to function before embarking upon their design. Due to the interorganisational nature of networked enterprises and the intimate relation between their business and their systems, this need is even more apparent. In this paper we analyse the requirements that networked enterprise computing places on enterprise modelling techniques, and introduce a new language for modelling networked enterprises. We will also argue that the UML, while highly successful as a software modelling technique, lacks some essential ingredients for networked enterprise modelling.
