Veal calves aged 8 weeks were fed iso-energetic amounts of milk replacers with either a low (7.1 g of calcium/kg of air-dry diet) or a high concentration of calcium (11.6 g of calcium/kg of air-dry diet) for a period of 10 weeks. The extra calcium was added in the form of calcium formiate. Final body weight of the two dietary groups was similar. Faeces were collected during the final week of the trial. The high calcium diet raised faecal dry matter output by 87% and faecal energy by 70%. The extra output of faecal dry matter was composed of 36% and 37% of crude fat and ash, respectively. The extra faecal energy output was for 75% in the form of crude fat. The high versus low calcium intake not only depressed apparent digestibility of total lipids but also that of crude protein, carbohydrates and ash. It is concluded that a high calcium intake by veal calves reduced energy availability without affecting body weight gain.
Functional capacities and immunophenotypic properties of bovine polymorphonuclear neutrophilic granulocytes (PMNs) from blood and uterus from clinical healthy cows were investigated two weeks before to two weeks after parturition. The number of circulating leukocytes and segmented granulocytes showed a continuous increase up to parturition and a decrease after that under the level of two weeks before parturition. The part of unsegmented granulocytes in the blood was relatively high (around 15 %) in periparturient cows. Compared with the period before parturition, in early puerperium isolated PMNs from blood showed a significant decrease in expression of some function associated membrane structures and partially in their functional capacity (generation of reactive oxygen species, cytotoxicity). The results demonstrate statistically significant changes in quantitative and qualitative properties of neutrophils from blood of clinical healthy periparturient cows. For understanding the physiological defence mechanisms and the reasons of pathological course of puerperium it is planned to investigate the role of different factors (steroid hormones, bacterial products, metabolic parameters) on function of PMNs under defined conditions.
SummaryIt has been hypothesized that the decrease in fertility of dairy cows is related to the increase in milk yield and associated with fatty liver and increased vulnerability for both infection and metabolic diseases. To elucidate the mechanisms behind this complex of health and reproductive problems an Animal Model, based on overfeeding in the dry period, has been developed. In an experiment carried out in 1996 sixteen animals were fed 119 MJ/d net energy to lactation (NEL) (experimental group) and another sixteen just 49 MJ/d NEL (control group) in the last 8 weeks before parturition. During lactation the cows from both groups were given the lactation ration ad libitum. After parturition both groups differed significantly in level and duration of the NEB, in weight loss, increased concentrations of NEFAs and bHBB in the blood and TAG in the liver. Although the insulin level was lower in the experimental animals during the first week, the difference was not significant. The number of ovulations within the first 100 days pp was significant lower in the experimental group and was related to depth and duration of the NEB and the weight loss: more NEB leads to less ovulations. The interval partus‐le ovulation was also significant different but related to the TAG level in the liver: more TAG leads to a longer interval. The experimental group with the fatty liver suffered more incidenses of metabolic diseases. It has been concluded that the Model leads to a severe NEB, to Fatty Liver and to more incidences of diseases. Both the NEB and the fatty liver influence the fertility of the cows pp and it can not be excluded that some diseases have an effect too. More studies are planned to unravel the factors that affect the fertility of high yielding cows.
The effect of growth retardation, resulting from feed restriction for a prolonged period, on the course of infection with Trypanosoma vivax was studied. Twelve male castrated West Africa Dwarf goats were subjected to a restricted feeding reghen of 55 g pelleted lucerne (Medicago safiva)/kg body weight0·75 per d for on average 17 weeks. Twelve other animals were fed on pelleted lucerne ad libitum, resulting in a normal growth pattern. After this period, all animals were fed on pelleted lucerne ad libitum, and six animatn of each previous feeding regimen treatment were infected with Trypanosoma viva. The other animals served as controls. In week 2 and 4 post infection (pi) energy and N balaoces were measured. In the week before infection and daring infection blood biochemical and clinlcal variables were measured. At 2 weeks before, and 4 weeks after infection, a liver biopsy was taken for measurement of triacylglycerol. Iofection caused intermittent fever and anaemia. The first peak of fever persisted longer in iofected anlmaln with normal growth than in infected animals with retarded growth. Gross energy and metabolizable energy intake, and energy retention were reduced ininfected animals. Metabolizable energy requirements for mainteoaoce were increased by infection. Plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and glucose concentratioos were increased in infected animals, whereas serum triiodothyronine and thyroxine coocentratioos were decreased.Plasma urea concentration and liver triacylglycerol were uoaffected. No interaction of growth retardation with infection with respect to blood biochemical variables was found, apart from plasma NEFA in week 2 pi. N retention was not significantly affected by treatments. In conclusion, minor indications were found for an interaction between growth retardation, as applied in the present study, and trypaommiasis infection in West Africao Dwarf goats with respect to energy and N metabolism.
