The experimental results of a one-month system field trial using a 512 kb/s superposed quadrature amplitude modulation (SQAM) satellite transceiver are described. The impact of cochannel and adjacent channel interference on the computer-simulated and measured performance of the band-edge system is investigated, and the corresponding bit error rate (BER) is analyzed. As an example application, International Datacasting Corporation's digital audio broadcasting system is discussed. The dispersed spectrum of the video carrier interference is found to be sufficiently low in power to allow high-performance band-edge data transmission with excellent BER. The data link provided 99.8% error-free minutes over a 24-h broadcasting period with degradation to neither video picture quality nor to subcarrier services. Close to compact disc quality digital audio was delivered. >
Log-phase cultures of Acanthamoeba castellanii, Neff strain, have been maintained at elevated hydrostatic pressures over periods of several days and the population has been recounted at the end of the experimental period. A pressure of 2,000 psi (136 atm) depressed growth of the population, but was quickly reversed on release. A pressure of 4,000 psi (272 atm) severly depressed population growth, and any increase was slight and short-lasting at 5,000 psi (340 atm). Growth of the population was resumed only after an interval of 1 or more days after release.
SYNOPSIS. The ameboid phase of Naegleria gruberi can be activated to transform to the flagellate phase, and cysts to excyst and transform to the flagellate phase, by a limited treatment with high hydrostatic pressure followed by release. The most effective treatment at 21 G is 45 min at 3500 psi (238 atm), which leads to almost 100% transformation. Following this dose of high pressure, 50% of amebae transform within 55–70 min after release of pressure, and nearly all within 75–120 min. Nearly all cysts hatch and transform within 200–240 min after release. Pressures of 4000 psi (272 atm) and above, and of 1000 psi (68 atm) and below, were ineffective at any duration of treatment.
SYNOPSIS. Leptomonas costoris n. sp. is described from Gerris comatus. It differs from other species of Leptomonas in the structure of the reservoir which has ultramicroscopic thickenings in its wall, matched by corresponding thickenings in the adjacent flagellar membrane. The one or two diagonal lines seen in the reservoirs of Giemsa‐stained specimens are thought to be manifestations of these ultramicroscopic fibrils. The reservoir structure suggests a close relationship between this species and Cryptobia, (family Bodonidae) in which somewhat similar structures have been described.Blastocrithidia veliae is redescribed and differentiated from B. gerridis.
SYNOPSIS. The isolation of a culture of Leptomonas mirabilis from the fly Cynomyopsis cadaverina from Guatemala shows that this flagellate is not a stage of Herpetomonas muscarum. It is characterized by giant forms that reach 200 μ in length. All records of giant leptomonads from flies are reviewed. This species was established in culture only by the addition of mosquito extract to the medium. Division of the giant flagellates appears to occur by equal binary fission.
