Moisture can diffuse from the wrapper to the fabric, or vice versa, thus changing the initial fabric regain. We examined the contribution of wrapper moisture content to the apparent or effective moisture content of the fabric during pressure decatizing. We monitored the change in fabric properties with changing moisture content of both wrapper and fabric, as determined by the relative humidity (RH) to which the fabric was conditioned, by measuring its low-stress mechanical properties. We used these data to determine the apparent RH to which the fabric was conditioned in the process, when the initial fabric moisture content and initial wrapper moisture content were different. The role of capillarity in improving the cohesion and tensile properties of oiled yam is discussed and experimentally tested. The effect is significant for low twist Sirospun yam and results in a lower rate of warp breaks than with a wax lubricant.
