Traditions in connection with foods do not just refer to the kinds of food consumed, but also to the place and society they originated from and the ways the items to be consumed were obtained and prepared. There is a tendency to believe that what people ate in former times was more natural, nutritionally superior and generally healthier than what we include in our diets nowadays. Although this is true for some foods, it is not correct for all foods and one needs to be critical and accept that even in the past some, dangerously unhealthy and nutritionally deficient food items and diets existed and that in our modern society we avoid various foods for a variety of reasons. On the other hand, in addition to age-old methods to preserve foods and make them palatable, we developed new ways to increase the shelf life of our food products and learned to improve taste and quality of some of our foods. Some dishes and ingredients are used to highlight important occasions and commemorative events. This paper critically evaluates the nutritional and cultural significance of traditional foods and explores the factors influencing their acceptance or rejection among contemporary consumers. By re-evaluating the cultural and nutritional roles of traditional foods, this paper contributes to ongoing discussions on health, identity, and sustainability in the global food landscape. Moreover, it functions as a conceptual lens to help decide which of the traditional foods and beverages to keep, modify, or discard.
Two reports of the discovery of bioluminescent cockroach species from South America in 1999 and 2003 led to a flurry of speculation on the evolution of the species, the likely function of the light supposedly emitted by the males of the species, and in fact whether these cockroaches were bioluminescent at all. No spectral emission data or biochemical analyses of luciferins or luciferases were available and observations as well as video recordings of the cockroaches failed to record any evidence of an emission of light. Considering the case against the so-called glowspots being able to emit light, it was concluded that the conspicuous spots on the pronotum of the males could play a part in mate choice or serve as a warning signal. Our re-examination of the issue confirms that the spots do not emit light and that, barring the possibility of scientific fraud or confusing fluorescence with bioluminescence, individual cockroaches in the field might have been seen to glow due to an infection with a species of the cosmopolitan bacterial genus Photorhabdus. We were able to show that Photorhabdus luminescens bacteria can colonize specimens of the cockroach Blaptica dubia and there is no reason to doubt that other species of cockroaches could not also become infected by this luminescent insect pathogen.
The endangered terrestrial firefly Pyrocoelia pectoralis (Olivier) is endemic to China. Populations of P. pectoralis have decreased dramatically due to urbanization and pollution. Breeding and re-introduction to a suitable habitat may save the species from becoming extinct. Because of its polyandrous character, an investigation into the possibility of sperm competition and paternity outcomes from multiple matings was initiated to better understand its reproductive physiology. To achieve these goals, 13 SSR markers were developed. The results of paternity experiments indicate there is a significant difference between P3 and P1 or P2. The female reproductive system has three spermathecae which accept sperm from different matings, and no bursa or spermatophore-digesting organ is developed. Our research established that multiple inseminations with sperm from different males occur, leading to competition between ejaculates. The benefits of such competition include an increasing number of sperm in the ejaculates of competing males and the consequential increase in fertilized eggs (thus, fecundity), and thereby a higher chance of genetic diversity and fitness in the offspring of the firefly P. pectoralis.
One of the least studied eyes of any beetle taxon are those of the scarabaeoid family Passalidae. Some members of this family of around 600 species worldwide are known to have superposition eyes (Aceraius grandis; A. hikidai) while others have apposition eyes (Cylindrocaulus patalis; Ceracupes yui). In C. yui of nearly 3 cm body length (this paper) the retinal layer is very thin and occupies approximately half of an ommatidium's total length, the latter amounting to 284 and 266 μm in the respective dorsal and ventral eye regions. The two eye regions are almost completely separated by a prominent cuticular canthus, a feature usually associated with the presence of a tracheal tapetum, a clear-zone between dioptric and light-perceiving structures and a regular array of smooth facets. In C. yui the facets are smooth (but not very regular) and a tracheal tapetum and a clear-zone are absent. The rhabdoms, formed by 8-9 retinula cells, are complicated, multilobed structures with widths and lengths of around 15 and 80 μm, respectively. The combination of some superposition and mostly apposition eye features, e.g., extensive corneal exocones, relatively small number of ommatidia, absence of a clear-zone and tracheal bush, suggest an adaptation of this species' eye to the fossorial lifestyle of C. yui, and, thus, a manifestation of the passalid eye's plasticity.
In Nagaland insects like the Eri silkworm Samia cynthia ricini and the Indian honey bee Apis cerana indica are reared for commercial purposes rather than just household uses. Of the marketed edible insects in India, Hymenoptera contribute 34% followed by Orthoptera (25%), Coleoptera (16%), Hemiptera (12%), and Lepidoptera (9%) while Odonata and Blattodea contribute 2% each. The present study estimates that an insect seller may earn Rs. 600-800 (US $7.51-10.01) per kg from various types of insects such as grasshoppers, crickets, katydid, water and diving beetles, ants, stink bugs and tent caterpillars. For 1 litre of honey an insect seller may earn Rs. 532-1600 (US $6.66-20.02) and for 1 kg of wood larvae (largely beetle larvae), carpenter “worms” (= Cossus spp. moth larvae) and hornets the vendor can demand Rs. 3,300-3,750 (US $41.29-56.31). The contribution of the edible insect sector towards the socio-economy and livelihood improvement of the people in both rural and urban communities is highlighted and discussed. Given the insect bio-resource in the region, the consumption of edible insects, coupled with mass production, processing, and marketing (as successfully implemented in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and some African countries like Cameroon and Nigeria), can be a boon to Nagaland.
BACKGROUND:An ethnozoological study of medicinal animals in the Kucha district, Gamo zone, Southern Ethiopia, was conducted to investigate and document the use of traditional medicinal animals and the associated indigenous knowledge. Tribal people still make abundant use of animals and their parts to manage diseases in humans and even livestock. METHOD:A cross sectional study design and purposively sampling techniques were used. Data were collected from 132 respondents based on semi structured questionnaires. Focus group discussions (FGD) and Key informant interviews (KII) were conducted; Fidelity level (FL), Relative frequency of citation (RFC) and Informants' consensus factor (ICF) were used to analyze species preference and importance. RESULTS:A total of 24 medicinal animals were identified with 13 species (54.2%) being mammals of which 5 species (20.8%) dominated. They were followed by arthropods, reptiles and fishes. Seven out of the total were domestic species (29%) and 17 (70%) were wild animals. The majority of these animals, i.e. 22 (91.7%), were used to treat human ailments; whereas 2 (8.3%) were used to treat livestock ailments. The ICF values varied from 0.8 to 1.The highest FL value (98%) was linked to the cow (cattle), the lowest (1.5%) to the scorpion. The RFC value (1.0) was highest for the cow and lowest (0.02) for the scorpion. Honey, milk, and butter were the most commonly used therapeutic animal products, but regarding direct uses, fresh/raw meat dominated. Out of ten ailment categories, headaches had the lowest ICF value (0.8). All others scored at least 0.9. CONCLUSIONS:In rural areas, sick people often do not only have limited access to modern medical facilities, they actually prefer traditional treatments considering them to be more reliable and effective. It is therefore important to focus on documenting, conserving, and safeguarding the indigenous knowledge so that strategies to manage the traditional wisdom can be implemented in the future. To achieve these goals, it is important to make sure that medicinal animal species are available in sufficient numbers and neither threatened by habitat changes or overexploitation.
The endemic and endangered Chinese firefly Pyrocoelia pectoralis is a sexually dimorphic, nocturnal species. A previous attempt by this team to assemble a draft genome of P. pectoralis using PacBio and Illumina HiSeq X Ten platforms was limited in its usefulness by high redundancy and contamination. This prompted us to conduct an improved chromosome-level genome assembly of P. pectoralis. Ten chromosomes were further assembled based on Hi-C data to a 532.25 Mb final size with a 52.87 Mb scaffold N50. The total repeat lengths in the genome of P. pectoralis amount to 227.69 Mb; 42.78%. In total, 12,789 genes could be functionally annotated using at least one public database. Phylogenetic inference indicated that P. pectoralis and P. pyralis diverged ~51.41 million years ago. Gene family expansion and contraction analysis of 12 species were performed, and 546 expanded and 2660 contracted gene families were identified in P. pectoralis. We generated a high-quality draft of the P. pectoralis genome. This genome assembly should help promote research on the species' sexual dimorphism and its unique courtship behavior, which involves a combination of pheromonal and bioluminescent signals. It also can serve as a resource for accelerating genome-assisted improvements in the conservation of this species.
Long horn beetles are generally considered pests that weaken or destroy trees, as the larval stages of these beetles are wood -borers. However, in Nagaland some species are domesticated for the larvae, which are known for their exquisite taste and high nutritive value. In the present study, the traditional knowledge on semi -domestication techniques of Thysia wallichii (Hope, 1831) is documented. Additionally, the larvae were analyzed for protein and lipid contents, which were recorded as 56.18 +/- 4.06 % and 5.51 +/- 0.07 %, respectively. The larvae of the species are not only recognized as a food item but also represent a means of livelihood for local insect farmers. The larvae fetch INR 1000/kg when sold at the market. Even though the edible larvae of T. wallichii are much sought after and they are available in the wild, no initiatives for mass production exist in the region or elsewhere. This present documentation can be expected to generate interest among insect consumers in entomophagous countries, generally, and Nagaland, in particular, as the species can contribute proteins, minerals to the diet and also generate income. This study is the first of its kind and no record on semi -domestication of T. wallichii has been reported.

The freshwater snail Latia neritoides occurs in certain streams and lakes of New Zealand's North Island. It defends itself against predators with a unique mechanism - the release of sticky, glowing mucus. Two possible origins of this defence mucus had earlier been suggested: the foot and the pneumostome area. After examining the glandular system of the foot in a previous study, in the present study we examined the general morphology of L. neritoides, focusing on the mantle cavity. With the first complete 3D model of L. neritoides now available, it is possible to evaluate previous morphological studies and to give non-specialists a better understanding of the soft part anatomy of this fascinating gastropod. As a by-product of this, we also compared the capabilities of mu-CT and HREM on a methodological level. We characterized the two most common gland types in the mantel cavity (Lmcg1/Lmcg2) on the basis of their ultrastructure. They are present in large numbers and, therefore, regarded as likely candidates for being the producers of one or more components of the defence mucus. This notion was confirmed by histochemical analyses of Lmcg1 and Lmcg2 and other gland types in L. neritoides.
The human chin, also frequently referred to as the mental prominence, is a part of the human anatomy whose evolutionary origin and function have divided scientific opinion to this day. There were suggestions it could have been used in defence, assisted in the mastication process, aided in the formation of words (i.e. speaking), or that it played a role in mate choice. None of these explanations were satisfactory. This paper, backed up by observations on people from different parts of the world and cultures, using their chin to hold or clamp down objects resting on a person's arms in front of the body or to free the person's hands for other tasks, offers an explanation that has support from results on the evolution of bipedalism from apes to bipedal australopithecines, including Homo sapiens, and the importance of the hands in hominids as well as the heritability of the trait.
A variety of insects species are accepted as food among different communities around the globe. Convincing scientific evidence supports the fact that edible insects are a rich source of nutrients, especially protein, but also fats, and other micronutrients. The potential of edible insects as a sustainable alternative to conventional protein sources has been investigated and established. The protein and amino acid compositions of most of the edible insect species are generally comparable, if not superior to the conventional foods of animal origin. However, the use of edible insects as ingredients and high value-added products, protein in particular, could be more pragmatic and worthwhile to explore in the context of benefits from edible insects. This book chapter represents a comprehensive account of the processing of insects for protein production and also discusses improvements of physicochemical properties of the protein extracted from the insect.

The lepidopteran family of the Epipyropidae contains currently 32 known species of moths with larvae that are parasitic on plant and leafhoppers as well as cicadas. This paper focuses on behavioural aspects of the final instar of the cicada parasite Epipomponia nawai (Dyer 1904) on the cicada Hyalessa maculaticollis (de Motschulsky 1866) and represents only the second report of the species from South Korea. This species is a new host for E. nawai in Korea, since in the past it had only been reported once from Meimuna opalifera and Oncotympana fuscata in Korea. Molecular relationships between specimens of E. nawai collected in China, Japan, and Korea were analysed. The Chinese haplotypes fell into two groups: one clearly related to the Korean haplotype, but the other tightly affiliated with the Japanese haplotype. The findings suggest two routes for the occurrence of E. nawai in mainland China. Once the host cicada was dead or too weak to move, the caterpillar crawled away from it, seeking a place to pupate. Very little is known about parasitic Lepidoptera and therefore any information on host species or behavioural aspects is of importance.
